List Readers, Can anyone one tell me if this is the same Nannie Browning that lived on Sugar Run Road in late 40's & early 50's. She went to the Hubbard Springs Elementary School and then to Flatwoods School. She also had a sister named Mollie who had blond hair. Her obit makes no mention of a sister Mollie but I believe she passed away several years ago. My memory is old and decrepit but I think their fathers name was Mike. Thanx Nan Browning Thomas, age 68, a resident of Miamisburg, OH passed away peacefully on January 8, 2008 at her residence. Nan was born in Harlan County, KY on July 7, 1939 to the late Mike and Mary Jane (Blanton) Browning. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Curtis R. Thomas on December 15, 2007 and her son, Curtis Lee Thomas in 1983. She is survived by a son, Michael (Trudy) Thomas of Xenia, OH; a daughter, Rita (John) Crothers of Miamisburg, OH; a brother, John Browning of VA; a sister, Estelle Bunch of Dayton, OH; 5 grandchildren, Ryan (Jennie) Thomas, Jace Thomas, Sarah Babish, Heather and Rachael Thomas; a great-granddaughter, Jayleigh and by many nieces and nephews. Nan had retired from Kroger after 20 years of service and had also worked at Dorothy Lane Market. Funeral services will be held at 1 PM January 11, 2008 from the GEBHART-SCHMIDT-PARRAMORE FUNERAL HOME, Miamisburg. Pastor Michael Thomas officiating. Burial Highland Memorial Cemetery. The first marriage book is missing and before 1850 only 1830-36 are extant. Also, just as with Harlan, even when the books are available lots of early marriages never got recorded. The people just wouldn't travel to the county seat for a license and the ministers often didn't record them either. You will have to try to prove the marriage by land or estate records if the woman was an heiress after getting married. So I would suggest checking for same for the Upton and (E)step families. Sampson Wilder married either Ann Upton or Ann Estep or Stepp, possibly Nancy Ann Upton or Estep about 1820 and I can't find a marriage record in Harlan County, KY so I am thinking they could have gone to Lee County, VA to get married. If anyone has those early marriages I would appreciate a lookup. Thanks in advance. Barbara Turner
Can anyone here tell me whether the Lee Co. courthouse has chancery case files from the early to mid 1800s? I live in Kentucky and called the circuit court clerk's office to inquire and was told they do have some records, which I was welcome to search, but which they apparently don't have an inventory list of. The Library of Virginia has a program to index such chancery case files for the counties who have sent their records to them, but Lee Co. is apparently still in possession of such files. What I am wanting to know is the time period such case files are extant. So I was wondering if anyone on this list lived in Lee Co. and could advise me on this question. Thanks Mike Ferguson

The Middletons were in Lee county when the county was being formed and there was a Middleton Station to provide protection for the early settlers. Walter died there, I think in 1794, and his will is witnessed there and is recorded and included slaves. The family later moved into Knox county and Harlan county, Ky. My interest in them is through research into the Marsee/Massee line who were contemporaries of them at Chadwell Station . ---- "Jerry L. Hi, Shirley and all Lee County Folks, I have never heard of James Reasor, but my Wilsons' links to that family aren't real strong...just one marriage: Susanna Reasor to Marquis De Lafayette Wilson in 1858 Marquis was my GG uncle who died in Camp Douglas, the yankee prison in Chicago in Dec 1864...so I have done little research.on the Reasors, although the name pops up a lot in SW Va history. I cannot help with your question, but thanks for the question/information. I'm chiming in to say I descend from Daniel Reasor, b. 1782 and Susannah Jackson through their son Peter Reason, 1812-1893, & Rebecca Ely. Their son was James Greenlee Reasor, b. 1854 m. Hester Treadway. Has anyone researched Susannah Jackson?
