    2. seems like someone got a virus that went into their email and sent these notes out to everyone in their address book.? The catch is that aol software most of the time will put a kaputz to viruses carried by email.? don't click on anything in the email.? I saw one recently that wanted the password to an email account so they could add everyone in the address book to your "list".? Don't be fooled by that one either.? 3. Poor stewardship of the records, though it troubles us, does not make these newly found documents less the property of the county. The legal thing to do is return them to the clerk's office. However, it might be prudent to have them microfilmed first, if possible. The state archives might do it for free, or perhaps the LDS Family History Center could have it done. 2. Jim, You are so right about the sorry state of the basement at Lee County. There is a different clerk there who seems to care more about the records. I found a Warrant that proved a line under what looked like a trash pile. In the past in many court houses the records were not carefully watched and some records "walked out" of the courthouses. I believe this happened in Hawkins Co., TN which has been a very difficult county to work. Brenda H. Reed ************** Planning your summer road trip? Check out AOL Travel Guides. 2. My line is from Daniel Ward & Anna Curtis to Samuel Ward & Orpha Bradley; to James Bradley Ward & Catherine Roberts; to Lexington Daniel "Lech" Ward & Nicati Martha Brown; to John Edward Ward & Eliza Barbara Chafin; to Pearl Ethel Ward & Bradley Castle; to my mother, Dorothy Castle. I grew up on my grandparents farm off the road just about a mile from the Stickleyville grade school, eventually moved to Kingsport; then married an Army officer who was KIA in Vietnam, ending up living most of my adult life in Oakland, CA. I come home periodically to see family and do my research and tend the cemeteries. I am the researcher who has compiled the line back to Henrico County, VA and my work is posted on Rootsweb as "bhreed." Several of my cousins & I purchased new gravestones for Daniel, Samuel, Orpha, and Nicati but couldn't get them up the hill into the old Ward Cemetery (now called the Lawson-Ward Cemetery) so placed them as memorial stones in the Big John Ward Cemetery above the late Curtis Lawson's homeplace. I also uncovered the errors in the compilations taken from the Lee County Death Register relative to Daniel Ward who died 18 September 1877 at Lee County. I maintain that Daniel Ward was born in NC and specifically in Ashe Co., NC as proven by the 1850, 1860, and 1870 census records for Lee County, VA and that all the census records from 1800 to 1870 indicate that he could not have been 108 years old when he died as his parents did not marry until 16 April 1774 as proven through Ward and Stewart family records from the period. It is more likely that Daniel Ward was born in 1776 at Ashe Co., NC and certainly not in Lee County, VA. Recently one of my male second cousins who is the nephew of my grandmother, Pearl Ward Castle, gave me his DNA for the Ward DNA study. We have a bit of a mystery going as his DNA should have been a much closer match to a descendant of Daniel Ward's brother, Benjamin Ward. My cousin did a 67 marker test compared to the other subject who did a 37 marker test & is now waiting on results from the 67 marker test upgrade. We had a difference of one point on 2 alleles. Some scientists believe this still proves both are descendants of Benjamin Ward and Selah/Celia Stewart of Ashe Co., NC; others question this assumption. The results are due in later this month. Meanwhile we are looking for other direct line male Ward descendants from Benjamin Ward of Ashe County to submit to doing a 67 marker yDNA test through FamilyTreeDNA.com which costs about $250 through the Ward DNA study on this site. 2. I am so glad that someone wants to do the right thing but I wonder how these records got out in the first place? Does this not signify that there was at least one time a serious problem in the department? Athough there has been new elections and therefore new people I also can echo the feelling that records at the clerks office were treated poorly. I once was given permission to go downstairs and saw there a horrible mess of old records decaying and ignored. 2. The library is THE place for these records...the Lee County courthouse has absolutely the worst regard for these valuable records of any place I've ever been...one tip there I found old birth records scattered all over the floor...and the employees could have cared less! In a message dated 4/4/2008 7:20:28 A.M. Central Daylight Time, njshack@aol.com writes: The library. They have a good genealogy department and very helpful workers. Not a lot of people know about the society and the courthouse isn't going to publicized that they have them available. Although if they're originals, a good idea might be to give the courthouse the originals and copies to the library. -----Original Message----- From: Barbara Turner <turner.barbara@gmail.com> To: valee@rootsweb.com Sent: Thu, 3 Apr 2008 11:46 pm Subject: Re: [VALEE] Old documents Hi, Which organization is more likely to put them where people can have access to them? 3. Thanks Barbara,,,,, May I use that information in my file on our Wards? A cousin wrote a Ward Family History, with my errors, I'm going through it all trying to search and correct for my sister and myself. Sis and I plan to make a trip this fall to Lee Co., VA to research. My sister wrote to get our grandmother's birth record, they sent many of her siblings births but found nothing on her. As per records, some years (1995) ago I was in Grainger Co., TN (Rutledge) they had many old records stored in the old school house, without windows or any protection. We were in our RV, always carry a computer and scanner, so I slowly started scanning the records I was looking for. Afterward I spoke with many others the TN State Archives, finally sent people in to collect the records, but many had been taken and destroyed. At least some where saved. 3. Brenda, Here's mine: Daniel Ward & Anna Curtis Samuel L. Ward (born 1807) & Orpha Julie Bradley Samuel L. Ward (born 1836) & Sarah Frances J. "Fannie" Robinson Lucy Ellen Ward (born Lee Co, VA died Oklahoma) & Isaac Harrison Sage (They had 10 children, Isaac remarried twice after Lucy's death and fathered more children) Would this of interest to you? I found this in my researching. "ORPHA BRADLEY WARD, in the Lawson-Ward Cemetery. Unfortunately Daniel Ward's gravestone has been lost to a mowing machine and those of Samuel and Orpha Ward have also been badly damaged. Family tradition also states that Daniel Ward was buried near his slaves, however the Slave Schedules for Lee County indicate that the slaves belonged to his son, Samuel Ward. As a child and teenager, I personally visited this cemetery with my grandmother, Pearl Ward Castle. She shared this information with me and other family members who carry on this tradition. Some have placed Daniel's age at one hundred eleven years, others at one hundred eight. In June 1998 I placed three memorial gravestones in the Jonathan B. Ward Cemetery where Lexington Ward, James B. & Katie Ward, and other descendants of Daniel Ward are buried: one for Daniel Ward, one for Samuel Ward and one for his wife Orpha Bradley Ward, and one for Nicati Brown Ward, wife of Lexington Ward. This cemetery is located above Stickleyville. Let it be said that DANIEL WARD lived long and well and left many descendants who now live throughout the United States."
