Dear Lee Country researchers, I am relatively new to genealogical research, only three years now and still on the same ancestor, Peter H. Rowland of Lee County, VA. I have been trying to locate proof of who Peter's father is. The historical narrative points to one Michael T. Rowland who married Elizabeth Hairston. I would very much like to locate the wills of all or any for Michael, Nancy and Peter and not sure where to find those documents. All of Michael's brothers had wills so I am guessing that it is very likely that Michael followed suite. Michael died between 1814-1830 (I think in Lee Co. but have also heard Cumberland Co., KY). Michael's wife died in about the same time from. His son, Peter H. is said to have died in 1878. With these dates in mind, might anyone be able to advise me as to where I should begin my search for these wills ? Lee County ? If so, what department, person, number, etc. ? Thank you very much for any suggestions you might offer a newbie. Respectfully, Carrie Rowland
The Thompson Settlement Church minutes were essentially statements of the appointment of members to different posts within the church and the admitting and dismissing of members. There is an occasional reference to a husband and wife being admitted/dismissed from the church or perhaps a child of a couple. The minutes did not contain marriage, birth or death records, not much in the way of genealogically helpful information. The greatest value probably is the names of people who lived in the community over a number of years, proof that a possible ancestor lived near the church. If the record that is being discussed herein is the one that I saw, it was only a partial record. A lady had made copies of, she said less than half, the minutes to have the record of her family names, and had transcribed the full pages and posted those on the web. The posted record started about 1800 thru 1877, perhaps the entire minutes covered that period. Could anyone tell me if they know if this church was named from the Thompson family? If so which Thompson family? There were several Thompson's in that area. The "Early Settlers of Lee county Virginia, Vol II, page 821, has several pages on the Thompson family. RecoIf you haven't reviewed that information, suggest you find a copy, perhaps in the library for records of some of this family. Records do include the statement, "The records indicate that several of James thompson's sons were in early Lee County and the area where they settled became known as "The Thompson Settlement." Later this area acquired the name of "Beech Grove" and the community and the Baptist Church still bear the name of"Beech Grove." This James Thompson's will was signed, sealed and witnessed in March 1795. The books have no index; although an index exists somewhere in the world, at one time was on the internet but I couldn't locate it. The name Stephen Thompson is among this family; I have a kinsman Stephen Thompson Neill and I have also seen a Neill Thompson in the Lee County records, so my guess is that the Thompson and Neill families had an intermarriage at some point in time. Early marriage records for Lee county are rare. You could likely find Early Setters books in the Lee County library or genealogical society; maybe a library near you. Good luck in your research.
