SueBee. Thanks for leading me to the "Hills and Hollers" site. It is very impressive and well "put together". I enjoyed brousing and noticed lots of work there. Looking around I am finding a number of Hall families of whom are not directly related, and, they semed to have a yearning to venture into Kentucky. Perry County is an example. The Rev War Pension application of a John Hall, who was age 79 in October 1832 who was then living in Perry County, states he was from Pittsylvania County Va. Neither he or Amos seem to be of the John Hall and Mary Hash lineage. But thanks again for Hills and Hollers. Lee Hash Culpeper, Va. **************Get fantasy football with free live scoring. There is a genealogy of the Amos Hall family on the Hills & Hollers page located at http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~duncanrw/ On the left in the Table of Contents, locate and expand Family Lineages and Associated Information. I think it referred to a census district which was composed of some of the coal mines around 1900 just outside Appalachia. ---- BRIAN PARRIS <b.parris3@verizon.net> wrote: > Hi, > I know this is off topic of lee co. but does anyone here know if the city or community of Richmond in Wise county still exists or what the name was changed to. To get to where Edward Pennington's farm was, drive north on US421 from its junction with US58 in the town of Pennington Gap. In about a half mile, you will see the North Fork of the Powell River to your right, and the highway runs along to the left of it. The flat land to your right across the river was the Pennington farm. After about another half-mile, turn right onto State 621. After about a half mile, you will see a small cemetery to the right on a hill overlooking what was part of the farm. Edward Pennington and his wife Martha "Patsy" Flanary a buried there, along with one son. Edward and Patsy's gravestones are gone, but the stones of their son, Thomas Pennington (1799-1878), and his wife are still there and legible. To get to the Pennington Gap through Stone Mountain, drive on north on US421. North of its junction with State 621 on the right, the highway will begin to run between a railroad on the left and the North Fork of the Powell River on the right. Your are passing through Pennington Gap, which was cut by the river (not by Stone Creek, as I mistakenly wrote earlier). You will come to a store and service station on the right. If you park there, and look back down the highway, you will see the Great Stone Face on the side of the mountain. The railroad runs throught the rock beneath the stone face. Stone Creek runs into the North Fork near the junction of US421 and State 606, in the village of Stone Creek, a little more than a mile beyond where US421 passes under the railroad trestle beyond the store. The highway then runs upward to the left of Stone Creek for several miles on its way to Kentucky. Edward and Patsy Pennington were my GGGgrandparents. Pennington Gap was named for the Pennington family, which immigrated from North Carolina to Lee county around 1800. Edward Pennington (1769-1860) owned a farm on the North Fork of the Powell River, where Pennington Gap now is. His farm included a gap through Stone Mountain cut by Stone Creek. The gap was a passage through the Cumberland Mountains that was used, as was the more famous Cumberland Gap sixty miles to the southwest, by settlers travelling from the Valley of Virginia to Kentucky. The settlement became known as Pennington's, or Pennington's Gap, and was shortened through usage. Edward Pennington and his wife, Martha "Patsy" Flanary, daughter of John Flanary, and one of Edward and Martha's sons are buried in the Turner-Pennington Cemetery overlooking the Powell River on State 621 just east of US 421. -------------- Original message -------------- From: LeeHash@aol.com > How did Pennington Gap get it's name > Lee Hash > > > > **************Get fantasy football with free live scoring.
