According to the book Howards of Southeastern Kentucky by Francis Y. Dunham, Madison Howard's parents were John Covey Howard b.06 Mar 1806 Puckett's Creek, Harlan County, KY d.20 Nov 1899 Wallins Creek, Harlan Co., KY and Mary F. "Polly" Harris born 1825 married in Harlan County, KY 1856. I can't find a mariage record in the Harlan Marriage Records online. John Covey Howard also married Sally Saylor, and Matilda Brock (bef. 1828) Madison Howard was also married to Elizabeth Howard. I will see if I can find out who Matilda Helton married after Madison Howard. I would be glad to send you that whole line of Howard's by e-mail turner.barbara@gmail.com Barbara Turner On Thu, Aug 21, 2008 at 3:51 AM, brenda < brendamiddleton@henderson.main.nc.us> wrote: > I am hunting info on my grandmother, Cenore Howard Born Dec.5,1892 and died > June 27, 1959. Brian, I couldn't find any official marriages in Ancestry.com for Jonas Boatright or Boatwright, but I found two files that had his first wife as Elizabeth Boatwright and that she was his 2nd cousin 4 times removed. He must have married a distant cousin. Do you have any Elizabeths in your file that age? I am related to the Boatrights in Bell and Harlan Counties, KY and when I look for them I have to put Boatright, Boatwright and Boatrite in the search engines. I don't have Jonas in my files. Looking for the maiden name of Jonas Boatright's 1st wife Elizabeth they would have been married after 1860 and before 1870. They lived in Scott co. Va but there is no record for their marriage in Scott co. So I thought I would check Lee co. I s there anyone on the list that is related to the Boatrights? Thanks, Brian
Hi, I'm a new member of this mail list and I'm in search of some of my branches. I'm seeking a Haston Lawson b bet 1815 & 1820 either in NC or VA (census records state one then the other). Haston married Susan Bledsoe (married somewhere between 1840 & 1844 estimating by date of Alzira's birth) b abt 1819 VA (census record for 1850 indicate she was born in VA). I found them in 1850 and 1860 Scott County, VA census records but nothing before that. They had 2 children: 1)Jonah b abt 1843 (dates vary on his birth) VA married A)Areany Unknown (possiby Bledsoe) and B) Polly Lawson (daughter of Enoch and Lucy Roller Lawson) 2nd child of Haston and Susan listed as Alzira Lawson b abt 1842 (dates vary on her birth) VA. Alzira listed under many variariations married Jacob Sloan/Slone but had no children. A cousin found Jonah's death certificate which listed Haston Lawson b in TN and Susan Bledsoe b in TN as Jonah's parents. I have a suspicion that Haston Lawson may be the son of Ambrose/Ambers Lawson as I've found census records indicating that Ambrose lived in Lee County and Scott County, Va. I've also been told that Ambrose once lived in North Carolina and Ambrose lived close by Haston and Susan in the 1850 Scott County, VA census. I've traced Ambrose back to 1820 Lee County with 2 sons aged under 10 and 1830 with 2 sons of right age in Hawkins County, TN, but I cannot seem to make a positive link that he is Haston's father nor have i been able to find out who Susan's parents were. I've been unable to find a marriage license for Haston and Susan in Scott and surrounding counties. I've also checked Pat's site and came up with some information and she also has a photo of Jonah Lawson listed with the names of his parents, but I can't seem to come up with anything document wise or anyother wise to lead me to who their parents are. My Lawson and Bledsoe lines also tie into the Gilliam's/Bell's/Ash's/Moore's and other families like knots. Matter of fact, Jonah and Polly's daughter Bobbie married a Moore from the area. I'd love to connect with cousins or other relatives and see if we can match up some infomation and share and I'd love to see if I can find a marriage certificate for Haston and Susan in the Lee County area. Thanks, Rylynn
Thank you very much! I bet that is the correct location since the report indicated that Mr. Marcum bought the house in February 1920. Recently, while looking through the Library of Virginia web site, I found a report for the Works Progress Administration of Virginia Historical Inventory, completed in 1937 by Anne M. Davidson. The subject of the three page document was the J. N. Marcum (Markham) home located 12 miles west of Jonesville, on the south side of Route #601, according to the report. A note in the report stated that the house had been built from lumber said to have been sawed for the Court House plan. The original owner, and probable builder, was Elisha Adams, my g/g/g/grandfather, who most likely built the dwelling sometime between 1809 - 1815. He sold the house and property to his son, William Adams in 1835. From that time, there were five more owners. At the time of the 1937 report, the owner was J. N. Marcum as noted. It was indicated that the house was in very good condition. Elisha Adams owned more than 200 acres in the White Shoals area, apparently near where Hardy Creek enters the Powell River. (I think Hardy Creek was originally called Trading Creek). I wonder if anyone knows where the house was located, and if there is any possibility that it is still standing. Wayne Adams
