Hi Larry: How are you kin to Uncle Bob Dillman? I am curious, since I have never run onto anyone that was kin to him, except my family, and that is because he married my Great Aunt, Allie Bolling Dillman. He left Rose Hill at a young age, and they moved to Wise County, VA. He lived in Wise County when he died. I would be happy to scan you a picture of him, but have to hook up my scanner. Now that picture I was talking about at the "Coal House" in Middlesboro, is another story. It has Uncle Bob and Aunt Allie with an elderly couple. I am not sure they are his grandparents, Thomas R. and Miami Eldridge, since the picture is not written on as to who it is. I know Uncle Bob and Aunt Allie, but I have never seen a picture of the Eldridges, but just assumed it was them, because of their age, and the fact that it was taken in Middlesboro. Since they lived at Rose Hill, it would not have been far to go. That picture is glued in a very old picture album that was left to me by my Aunt Allie Bolling Dillman, Uncle Bob's (Robert Dillman) wife. I can't get them out, she glued them in too good and it will tear them up to try to get them out. Where is the McLin Cemetery you mentioned? I just live down the valley in LaFollette, and am not too far from Rose Hill. I would love to know where Thomas Eldridge lived, and where they and the Dillmans are buried. Do you know if the house is still there? Uncle Bob was raised there. Do you know what happened to Tip Dillman and Alice Eldridge Dillman? They died or left and left their chidren to be raised by Alice's parent, Thomas and Miami Eldridge. I won't be home tomorrow, but will try to get that scanner hooked up and at least scan you a picture of Uncle Bob Dillman. I'll hunt those pictures out and see what I have. Thank you for this information but your right I was aware of it. There must be some relation between Ransom and William other than being married to sisters. They named their children the same and lived in close proximity all their lives. I wish I knew who the "Miss Eldridge" was that was Greenberry Short's mother as Ransom was living with Greenberry's family in 1850. Have you ever searched the court house for adoption, indentured, bonded records? Do you know if Lee County had a newspaper between 1835 and 1850? New to the list but i was reading where one posted some information on John and Nancy ? Eldridge If you find out anything would you please let me know. Thank You LP Eldridge
Hi Zahn: You can tell it is 3:30 in the morning, since I put in my first email to you, before I found all my records, that I knew Alice had a married name, but couldn't remember it. Of course, it was Dillman. I just saw that goof, too late, and was horribly embarrassed. I can only use the late hour as an excuse, sorry about that. Libby I hear their whispers...ethereal, soft and still. Daughter, if you do not remember us, who will?
Hello Zahn: I found my census records. Robert (Uncle Bob) Dillman's parents were Tipton Dillman b. 1876, son of George and Mary (unk. maiden name) Dillman, and Alice Eldridge Dillman. George Dillman was a blacksmith at a place near Rose Hill called Bales Forge. I do not know where that is located. They also have an entire houseful of people with the surname of Campbell primarily, but there is also a Mary Van Huss there too, and a lady named Martha Carmony (looks like that surname), who is a sister-in-law to George Dillman. They must have been running a boarding house, along with George being a blacksmith. Tip, Uncle Bob's Daddy, was only four years old. This was on the 1880 Lee County census. In 1900, Tipton "Tip" Dillman and wife Alice Eldridge Dillman, are living in their own household, have son Emory, daughter Leone, and a servant who looks like his name is Frank Call/Coll and is 14 years old. Something obviously happened to Tip before the 1910 census, when Alice at only age 28, has moved in with her parents, Thomas R. and Miami Eldridge, with her children. Uncle Bob is on that census at 8 years old, since he was born in 1902. I wonder what happened to Tip, Uncle Bob's daddy? On the 1920 census, Alice is gone, and she and Tipton's children are still living with their grandparents, Thomas R. and Miami Eldridge. Alice Eldridge Dillman would only have been about 38 years old here, so now I am wondering where she went? So, I have two mysteries on my hands. What happened to Uncle Bob's Daddy, Tipton "Tip" Dillman between 1900 and 1910, and then what happened to his mother, Alice Eldridge Dillman, after 1910 and before 1920? If you or anyone knows the story or stories behind these disappearances, I would really love to hear them. It might explain Uncle Bob's "James Dean" behavior, before and after he and Aunt Allie were married. He was a "major" daredevil, and would do anything dangerous, and it led to his death at a very young age. My Daddy, who passed away in 2002, and was a retired Captain on the TN Highway Patrol, thought the world of Uncle Bob, who took him riding on his motorcycle, and all sorts of things when Daddy was very young. I certainly hope you and/or all the good people on this list know what happened to Tipton "Tip" and Alice Eldridge Dillman. Sincerely, Libby Bunch Smiddy I hear their whispers...ethereal, soft and still. Daughter, if you do not remember us, who will?
Thank you so much for that information. I did not have Thomas's parents at all, since I really had not gotten anything done on them, except the census records. I just "happened" on them searching for Uncle Bob, since his wife had told me he was from Rose Hill. I got busy putting up beans today, and didn't find my census records. I do know that on at least one of them, Uncle Bob, whose real name was Robert, as you know, had his mother on the census living with her parents, Thomas and his wife, (I know her name, just forgot, that is why I have to hunt records), and Uncle Bob's siblings. His Mama seemed to "leave" them with her parents, and then come back now and again. I think she had a "married" name, but will have to check. Uncle Bob married Allie Fair Bolling from Flat Gap, Wise County, VA. I sound ignorant, but am lost without my notes, but I do have their "original" marriage license, for which he made a homemade frame. I have no idea how they met, since he lived in Rose Hill and she was raised in Flat Gap, VA. Aunt Allie was a sister to my grandmother, Erma Bolling Bunch, and both were daughters of Ivory Morrell and Louisa Raleigh Bolling of Flat Gap. I did inherit their pictures albums, and have several pictures of Uncle Bob and Aunt Allie, with an older couple at the "Coal House" in Middlesboro, KY, and around the area. I am sure that the elderly couple is probably Thomas Eldridge and wife, Uncle Bob's grandparents. I can't identify some of them, who could possibly be his siblings, or even his mother. I live halfway up on the side of Cumberland Mtn., about half an hour away, going west, down Powell Valley, from Cumberland Gap. We are out of the City limits, but live in LaFollette. So that area is very familiar to me, but that new road has messed me up good in finding old landmarks that Grandmama used to show me. Aunt Allie talked about the White Rocks and the Sand Cave, and had an old glass Alka Seltzer bottle, those tall, narrow glass ones, with layers of different colored sand in it. She and Uncle Bob used to picnic up there on the mountain. I never knew Uncle Bob, he died before my time, but Aunt Allie told me all about him when I was young. I will definitely find those records tomorrow, so I won't sound so ignorant. I do so appreciate your time and help, and also for not thinking I was "barging in" on your conversation with the lady you were helping. I don't think you are barging in at all. I can provide you with a little bit on your Eldridge line. Robert Dillman's grandparents were Thomas R. Eldridge and Mimie (?). Thomas' parents were William Frank Eldridge and Ruth Owens. They were married in Claiborne Tennessee 1-25-1844. All I know about William's parents were that his father was John Eldridge and his mother was Nancy (?). Nancy is widowed by 1840 and appears on the census for Lee Co. Virginia in 1840. This Eldridge line goes back to early Lee County. John and Nancy were there in 1830. I'll check and see if I have any more information on them. Zahn In a message dated 10/5/2008 9:59:56 P.M.
