    1. [VALEE-L] 1870 census look-up Smith & Parsons
    2. Barb
    3. Hi, Is there anyone on the list who would be able to look up Henry Smith in the 1870 Lee Co census, Rocky Station Township? I'm looking for his son Edward C. Smith born about 1852. Also I'm looking for William Parsons and his son William R. Parsons (b. abt.1861-1864), also in the Lee Co. 1870 census. If the 1870 census is not available, 1860 would also help. Thanks so much, Barb

    3. Using a mapping program and the USGS locator in the net I have put together a map showing the Wyrick Cemetery off Route 59, East of Jonesville. To see the map click on or enter the following URL. I'm hoping to drive from MN to visit Lee Co., VA while my kids are out of school between Christmas and New Years. I'm doing some reconnaisance now in the hopes of making that trip. I need to pin down some locations and place names. Looking for any 1860 & 1870 & 1880 Lee Co., VA census WYRICK/WIRICK listings. If anyone has the 1850 Lee Co. census, I'd really, really appreciate a look up on these 3 pages. Lee County, VIRGINIA: 1850 Census Index WIRICK 390B-391A-397B Need directions to the Wyrick Cemetery near Rose Hill, Lee Co., VA from any main highway. I'm hoping that Elizabeth (Callahan) Wyrick (b. 1816 - d. February 20, 1859) and Barbary (Meyers) Wyrick (b. 1787 - d. February 24, 1858) are buried there. Regardless of whether Elizabeth and Barbary are there or not, I'm related to the Wyricks around Rosehill somehow. Also, I've heard of Loading Creek and Trading Creek - has anyone else ever heard of those place names? I assume that they are a really small towns near creeks (can't find anything like that on any map that I have.) Perhaps they don't exist any more. 1. [VALEE-L] Kissiah Brewer King (Hamilton?)
    2. Corinne Chadderdon
    3. Hi to both Harlan and Lee: It's been awhile since I asked this question so I thought I would try again. My gg-grandmother Kissiah "Kisey" Brewer d/o Jeremiah and Mary "Polly" Blevins Brewer m. Chocolate "Chockley" King 12 Feb 1869 in Harlan Co. It is thought that Chockley died abt. 1911. No record of his death has been found. My cousin who is the granddaughter of Alice "Elsie" King, and the g-granddaughter of Chockley and Kisey King, was told all her life that Kisey was a Hamilton. When I received my g-grandmother's (she was another daughter of Chockley and Kisey) original application for a SSN she put down that her mother was Kisey Hamilton. It is documented that Kisey is a Brewer so it seems apparent that Kissiah/Kisey Brewer King probably married a Hamilton sometime after 1911. We have not been able to document Kissiah's death or burial. I have checked with KY Vital Records and there is no Kissiah King or Hamilton. I am hoping someone in either Harlan or Lee can help with Kisey's death record. Thanks in advance for any help and my sincerest wishes for Happy Holidays. Corinne

    3. Subject: The Night Before Christmas--SOLDIER Importance: High 'TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS, HE LIVED ALL ALONE, IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE MADE OF PLASTER AND STONE. I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE, AND TO SEE JUST WHO IN THIS HOME DID LIVE. I LOOKED ALL ABOUT, A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE, NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS, NOT EVEN A TREE. NO STOCKING BY MANTLE, JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND, ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES OF FAR DISTANT LANDS. WITH MEDALS AND BADGES, AWARDS OF ALL KINDS, A SOBER THOUGHT CAME THROUGH MY MIND. FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT, IT WAS DARK AND DREARY, I FOUND THE HOME OF A SOLDIER, ONCE I COULD SEE CLEARLY. THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING, SILENT, ALONE, CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME. THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE, THE ROOM IN SUCH DISORDER, NOT HOW I PICTURED A UNITED STATES SOLDIER. WAS THIS THE HERO OF WHOM I'D JUST READ? CURLED UP ON A PONCHO, THE FLOOR FOR A BED? I REALIZED THE FAMILIES THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT, OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT. SOON ROUND THE WORLD, THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY, AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY. THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR, BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS, LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE. I COULDN'T HELP WONDER HOW MANY LAY ALONE, ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME. THE VERY THOUGHT BROUGHT A TEAR TO MY EYE, I DROPPED TO MY KNEES AND STARTED TO CRY. THE SOLDIER AWAKENED AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE, "SANTA DON'T CRY, THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE; I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM, I DON'T ASK FOR MORE, MY LIFE IS MY GOD, MY COUNTRY, MY CORPS." THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER AND DRIFTED TO SLEEP, I COULDN'T CONTROL IT, I CONTINUED TO WEEP. I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS, SO SILENT AND STILL AND WE BOTH SHIVERED FROM THE COLD NIGHT'S CHILL. I DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE ON THAT COLD, DARK, NIGHT, THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR SO WILLING TO FIGHT. THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER, WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE, WHISPERED, "CARRY ON SANTA, IT'S CHRISTMAS DAY, ALL IS SECURE." ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH, AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT. "MERRY CHRISTMAS MY FRIEND, AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT." This poem was written by a Marine stationed in Okinawa Japan. The following is his request. PLEASE. Would you do me the kind favor of sending this to as many people as you can? Christmas will be coming soon and some credit is due to our U.S. service men and women for our being able to celebrate these festivities. Let's try in this small way to pay a tiny bit of what we owe. Make people stop and think of our heroes, living and dead, who sacrificed themselves for us. Please, do your small part to plant this small seed.

The person I am seeking information on is Grover Daniel Johnson, born 1911 and died 1961. He married Margaret Lucretia Greever and had 2 sons named William and Wayne. I have found SOME information on the Greever side, but nothing whatsoever on the Johnson side. Can someone give me a tiny hint? Really small? I don't mind a little tiny hint...just something.... 1. [VALEE-L] Update notice for website
    2. Hi All: Happy Thanksgiving! Hope everyone's was enjoyable. In my homesick mood, I spent some of the day creating new pages for my website. I added some state historical markers, some new coal mine stories and modified some files to hopefully make them easier to load. The index URL is: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~duncanrw I hope to continue adding information. If you have any historical photos, documents, stories, recollections, or biographies and are willing to share them for the website, please contact me. I am committed to keeping our research free! As always, I welcome your comments. The mail traffic on the lists seems to slow down during the holdiay period. I'd like to increase the volume! I'd love to see your information, questions, etc. on the lists. Together, we can make a difference! Sincerely yours, Wayne Duncan

    2. Hi, If anyone can help please do. I'm looking for a marriage between Lee/Levi Partin/Parton and Sena/Scenie Prichard. Abt. 1900-1905 I was told that the couple married in or at Cumberland Gap, so I don't really know if it's KY, VA, or TN. These are my grand parents, so any info will help. Thanks in advance.
