Am hoping someone can shed some light on JAMES ELDRIDGE (b. 1760-1770 and d. 1830-1840 Lee Co., VA) and wife Margaret (unknown). They are thought to be the parents of MOSES (b. 1781-1790. The 1850 Harlan Co., KY census, states he was born Surrey Co., NC); JOHN (b. 1790-1800 and d. 1835-1840 Lee Co., VA) who married Nancy (unknown); JESSE (b. 1800-1810 and died after 1830 where he was found in the Lee Co., VA census); and EPHRAHAM (b. ca 1815 VA and died after 1850 where he was found in the Lee Co., VA census). Would like to learn more about JAMES. Might he have served in the Rev. War? If so, from what state? VA, NC or some where else? I know there were many Eldridges up in MD. Finding a Will or Probate records might prove useful. I descend from John. Sincerely, Mary in CA
Hi All: I have completed some more additions to the Hills and Hollers website. Many thanks to the folks who are contributing! I am most appreciative. I have added pages concerning the old L and N Railroad and an article concerning an individual who spent some 70 years in the coal mining industry. I also updated the Death Certificate page. The Wise County VA Historical Society has been most generous and I would like to personally thank them for their efforts. We have undertaken a huge project and are slowly getting it done. If you have sent me something for posting and it is not up on the page yet, please give me a little more time to format everything. If you do not see it by next Friday, please email me and remind me! I have been a little occupied rebuilding the transmission and clutch in my truck for the last few days. After some initial incorrect parts, I am happy to say all is in order and seems to be working ok. Thanks to all those who sent suggestions and comments about that job. I used many of them! Last thing, I am slowly retrieving info about whom is researching who and where you are researching from my guest register. I hope to use that information to create a page to help allow folks to contact others who may be researching the same surnames or the same areas. As always, comments and suggestions are welcome. I have not seen any information or ads for the Cemetery Book, Vol. 3 that was scheduled to have been published during the fall. Did Mary Parkey's untimely death delay the schedule or have I missed the order? Thx, Sue
Hi list, Is there someone who could do an 1870 Lee Co. census look-up for the family of James and Mary Parsons? They would have a son William R. about 7 years old at that time. Thanks so much, Barb
Dear List: Can someone or anyone do a look up for me? I am trying to find a Charles Matlock born in 1810. He should be atleast, 30 in the 1840 Census. I have several families listed but, have no way to look at the film. The listings are: 1. Matlock, Charles Lee 118 2. " , Joab Lee 118 3. " , Martha Lee 118 4. " , Wm. Lee 118 5. Matlock, John Lee 116 The Charles I am looking for is in the census of 1850, pg.394,Dw#1249,Hse#128,Fm#1280. Their should be children also. In 1840, 2 boys, age 3-8, and 1 girl, age 6. I have the list written down for 1850,1860,1870, I just need 1840. Thank you in advance, and for reading. Have a teeny request for someone with the 1900 Lee Co., VA census. Regarding the household of Henry Dash and wife Louisa. With them is her mother, Lucy M. Miller. Is there is any notation regarding how many children Lucy had or how many were living? Thanks, Mary
Does anyone know of the following family found in hh 421 of the 1870 Lee Co., VA census: David C. Miller 37; Martha B. 29; John 12; Elizabeth 11; Susan 9; William 7; Sarah 5; and James 1. All born Lee Co. Who are the parents of David and Martha? Any descendants of this family on the list? Thanks, Mary
Can anyone tell me if there is a family in the 1880 census with a head of household named Edwin Thomas Miller or Thomas Edwin Miller. Wife was named Mary J. Children could be Joseph Samuel, Lucy Elizabeth, John Thomas and Cordelia Marie. Thank you, Mary
Dear Elaine and other interested parties: The Powell Valley News is the local newspaper, published weekly in Pennington Gap, Lee Co., VA. This began in 1926. Some (or all) of these papers are on microfilm in the local library (Lee Co. Public Library). You might want to call in the afternoons (540) 546-1411(ask for Miss Elizabeth Carpenter, the local genealogy "expert", as she would know what is on microfilm etc.). I bet she would at least let you know if your grandparents are listed in that (or in the Lee Co. Death Registers) which are available in book form at the same library. The regular staff is not genealogically "attuned", so you really need to call when Miss Elizabeth is there - only afternoons, before 5 PM EST or EDT. Good luck! Dot in Tampa, FL
Hi all, Just a quick note to let you know what is going on in my personal life. Hate to be a bearer of bad news, (perhaps not so bad??) but I am going to be out of touch for a few days. It appears as though the clutch and/or engine in my truck has finally given out. (145,000 miles and 11 years after I bought it! ) It will not move at all. I cannot afford to buy a new vehicle or to have a professional mechanic do the work required so it will be me trying to fix it. That should be a learning experience to say the least. Going to have to use some of my country upbringing and learn just how that beast works. I have no other alternatives but to dedicate the majority of the next few days to that beast. Best bet is that Sunday is the earliest I will be back mobile again, given that my learning curve is going to be the better part of the next two days. I will do everything I can to answer CRITICAL emails. I don't expect to find time to any updates to the Hills and Hollers website. If there is something that absolutely will not wait, please put the word "CRITICAL" in the subject line of your email. My apologies to list members who will consider this email to be frivolous but I thought it best to let my lists and those who regularly visit the Hills and Hollers website what is going on. Thanks for your understanding. Hi All - I have been lucky enough to find my GGGrandparents still living on the 1920 census for Lee County VA, and they were living on Machine Branch Hollow Road, as the census taker wrote a note to the side. At that time JOHN WEBB was 90 years old, and his wife MARIAH (MARIER, MYRA, etc., lots of different spellings) WEBB was 87 years old. My question is this: Since they died after 1920, are there any newspapers that might have an obituary? Also, I want to order their death certificates from the state vital records, but they won't check for it unless I know the date of death, which I do not. They are buried at Haynes Cemetery, now called Elydale Cemetery, but it is an unmarked grave, so I don't know the date of death, only that it is on or after 1920 and certainly before 1930. If anyone can give me any advice, I would really appreciate it! Elaine
My apologies. Many of you have sent email looking for the link or address to the Cadet Cemetery page that I added. Like a dummy I forgot to create one when I added the page. UH Duh! Here is the URL http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~duncanrw/cadet_cemetery.html You can also now access it via the Miscellaneous Genealogical Records page at the site. Hi All: Have added more death certificates, a transcription of the Cadet Cemetery in Wise County VA (with a photo), some new nicknames, some old letters from the Ramey Family, and a great photo of the Kilgore Fort House in Scott County VA. Many thanks to the contributors. I have tried to ensure that credit is given in the respective locations! I have one volunteer working on entering the death certificate data into a spreadsheet so I can create a search engine for it. (Later!) As I format the certificates as I receive them, she is entering the data! I am also awaiting approval from CSX Rail to post some wonderful information about the old L & N railroad and how its expansion helped the Cumberland area. If you have submitted information for inclusion on the site and it is not entered yet, please contact me poste haste... I don't think I am behind with any more! Hope this information helps someone. Good morning all: I have just completed updating/revising the "Hills and Hollers" site. I have added a DEATH REGISTER page for information being provided by Rhonda Robertson and the Wise County Historical Society on the deaths of former coal camp residents. I hope to keep adding the records as fast as Rhonda can provide them in scanned format. I have also added some more state historical marker photos provided by some of you. I would love to expand this portion to other states. Got any photos of historical markers laying around from your last vacation or day trip? Send them to me and I'll add them to the site! And lastly, I have revised the homepage. I added a guestbook (which many of you requested) and revised the homepage so that the "table of contents" has its own page now. I plan to build a searchable database of all the records and files on the website and create downloadable files for them as well. Sure wish I could devote more time but alas; I have to work for a living! As always, comments and suggestions are always welcome. Hello All: Some folks seem to be having problems using the last link I sent to the "Hills and Hollers" website. Because of the differences in operating systems on different servers, sometimes the AOL hypertext links do not work properly. If the hyperlink in my signature line does not work properly, please use the cut and paste functions to manually enter this line into the search line of your respective browser; http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~duncanrw Be careful if you manually type it in... the character in front of duncanrw is a tilde (~), not a dash (-). It makes all the difference! I apologize for anyone's difficulties. If you continue to have problems, please contact me privately at navyump@aol.com and I will try to rectify the problem. William Spurlock who lived on what is the modern Lee County/Hancock County line, applied for a Rev War pension in 1835 Hawkins County TN. His witnesses were William Nicholas and Christian Pearson. Does anyone know if there was any time of family relationship between these three men or if they were just friends and/or neighbors? I know that some members of the three families traveled to Wayne County, Kentucky together but apparently not William. Did he die in Lee County? Hawkins County? Knox/Harlan County, KY? Thanks! Hello All: I have just finished adding some new pages and updating others at the "Hills and Hollers" website. Feel free to peruse the site. New links, photos, new information, etc. I hope someone finds the info useful. Still looking for more information to add! Anxious to get some more information!!!!!! I believe I have posted all information that was in the "needs to be processed" folders I had. The only exception is a series of images concerning the L&N Railroad's Cumberland Division. I am still researching the copyright issue. There is no publisher or author information in the original. The article was written by a L&N employee...any ideas as to the legality to publish on the website? If you have sent info and it is not posted, please contact me!
