Can anyone tell me the web address for the Hills and Hollers web site? Thank you, Donnene
Hello, First, I'd like to say "You're welcome" to all who have kindly thanked me for posting the 1835 Lee Co VA tax list. Anyone who wishes to retain their own copy of the file, by whatever means, is certainly welcome to do so. Second, this is notification that the 1835 tax list will be permanently housed at Jeff Weaver's "New River Notes" website: http://www.ls.net/~newriver/va/lee1835.htm and it will only be available for a few more weeks at the "GeoCities" web address which I originally provided. For anyone who wasn't previously aware of Jeff's "New River Valley" site, it is a great resource for southwestern Virginia genealogical research. Is the area of Trading Creek still known as Trading Creek or has it like so many other places been renamed something different? This is one of the obstacles that I keep running into. Norma
Hi Betty, Thanks for the posting and I will would love to see that map. Is it something you could scan and send to me via- email? I don't know if these are your Burgin family or not but here is what I find in the book, " Clearfork and More", by Bonnie Page. By the way, many of my family found in this book came from the Lee County area. Page 365 Pruden Cemetery listing: Esteal Burcan July 16, 1916 Dec 10, 1916 Page 395 Census 1910 Claiborne County Tn. Hello Norma and and other listers, Apologies to Norma and others, I made the tax list transcription a few months ago and sent the microfilm back afterward. I have reviewed so many tax lists for other places since then that I cannot now say for sure what additional information was recorded, other than the date that each individual submitted their list of taxable property, and the amount of taxes due. I do not believe that the lists were specific about the location of any taxable land, but I cannot say that with certainty. I do recall that the tax lists for Lee Co were quite readable however, and are a very complete series through time, in contrast to many other counties in the eastern USA. I encourage anyone who is researching Lee County roots in detail for this period to use my transcription as a jumping-off point and order the tax lists microfilms at your local LDS Family History Center ... and enjoy the good fortune of being able to access them! (My ancestors did not stay long enough to own land in Lee County, so I have no familiarity with the deed records.) Because the 1830 census for Lee County has also been transcribed by some kind soul and posted on the Lee Co VAGenWeb site, I was able to compare the names in the 1830 census with those on the 1835 tax list. Somewhere over half of the names in 1835 were apparently new, meaning that many people had left the county between 1830 and 1835, and many others had moved into the county. Clearly the 1830s were a time of great flux through Lee County, mostly due to westward migration. My own ancestors/relatives (Michael King; Harrison Motley and his other children and their spouses including John Workman, Hardy Sparks, and Robert Roberts) came to Lee County from western North Carolina. They were only in Lee County for one to three years before moving westward again, this time to Indian Creek Township, Monroe Co Indiana, and the neighboring Center Township, Greene Co Indiana. Regards and best of luck in your research, Joe __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! Hello to all, First I want to say Thanks a lot Joe for posting the Lee County 1835 tax listing. I see several very interesting folks here and wonder if anyone would care to tell me if you are familiar with an area called Trading Creek in the Lee County area. I think that is the location where some of my ancestors lived and have been stuck for quiet some time now. Another thing is are you aware of a listing that would indicate the locations of the property for which they were taxed? I would be very interested in knowing if this tax collector went door to door and listed accordingly. Do the original documents give any of this information? I am most grateful for any information you can give me and will gladly share anything I can obtain. Regards, Norma

I'm looking for information on Lewis V. Johnson b. 1886 in Lee County, VA. Does anyone have any information on this person? Laura Johnson

My people lived near Trading Creek and I have a wonderful map at home that I got at the Lee County Library that shows all the creek drainages. It's in the NW part of the county. According to the GNIS system, 15 ni NE of Rose Hill. Any SCOTTs or BURGINs from this part of Lee County? Mine left for Indiana in 1833..... Hello all, I've transcribed the 1835 personal property tax list for Lee County. It is a partial transcription, which is to say that while it does include all names in the list, I have not transcribed the property amounts, taxes owed and so forth. Until such time as the Lee County VAGenWeb site coordinator has a chance to place this material in the GenWeb archives and link it from the site, I have posted it at the following web address for public access. http://www.geocities.com/valee1835/VaLee1835.txt Regards, Joe __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? According to today's (Fri. 9 Feb 01) Knoxville News Sentinel, the History Channel will be airing a show at 10pm tonight called "Frontier Homes" which was mostly filmed at the Museum of Appalachia in Norris, just north of Knoxville. The show is about a two-story log home built in the 1700's in Ben Hur, Lee County, VA between Jonesville and Pennington Gap. The home had been threatened by road construction, so it was disassembled in Lee Co. and reassembled at the Museum. The house had been in the GRAHAM family for several generations.
