    1. [VALEE-L] Hills and Hollers Website Update Notice
    2. Hello All: You are receiving this notice because at some time in the past you requested to be added to the update notice list. I have had some complications with my software and have had to revert to an old (backup) list. If you wish to be removed from the notification list, please respond to this notice with REMOVE in your reply subject line. I will promptly remove your address from the list. Hills and Hollers has had some new information added and lots of updates added since the last notice. The transcription area has a new cemetery transcription, the state marker page has new photos, the family history files have some updated information, the SWVA/NETN scenery pages have new pictures, etc. Realistically, there is more than I can squeeze into this notice. If you have articles, histories, photos, etc. that you'd like to put on the website, I'll happily format them. Remember, you own the copyrights and permissions, I just display them at your pleasure! I'll never lay claim to your property. Well, with all that said, I hope you enjoy the site. Hope that our efforts help you find a "lost" ancestor or bring back some good memories of days gone by. Sincerely, Wayne Duncan Webmaster http://www.hillsandhollers.net memorymaker@hillsandhollers.net

    1. [VALEE-L] GILLEY / SAYLOR
    2. This is a status report and obviously not a finished product. Discussion is invited. A book, EARLY SETTLERS of LEE County, VIRGINIA and ADJACENT COUNTIES VOLUME II; 1977; compiled by Hattie BYRD MUNCIE BALES; mentions that John Gilley (Gilly) was born 1780 and migrated from North Carolina to Lee County, Virginia. According to this book, the first deed recorded in Lee County, dated 5 May 1802, conveyed from George and Katy Barger to John Gilley, pesonal property and 100 acres of land lying in Wildcat Valley on the waters of the North fork of Clinch river. This book lists the following children of John and Mary Gilley, who lived in Lee County, Virginia: John Gilley born 1806 Elizabeth Gilley died 1855 at age 53 Absalom Gilley died March 20, 1856 at age 45 Jesse Gilley born 1800 Adaline Gilley born 1820 "There may have been other children." The cited book mentions that Lee County, VA Deed Book 10, page 302, records a conveyance on 4 June 1846 of 50 acres in Lee Co. from John Gilly, Sr. and Mary, his wife, of Lee Co. to George Gilly. It has been reported that a book titled "HISTORY of the GILLEY FAMILY", by Phyllis Gilley, mentions that John Gilley was born 1750-60 in North Carolina, married Katy Barger, and they had seven children: 1. Jessee Gilley born 1800, married Ann Clark from Jonesboro, Tennessee 2. Gemina Gilley born 1810 married Hual Slemp 3. Louisa Gilley married John Wells 4. Iva B. Gilley born 1823 married Mr. Hill 5. Elkana Gilley married Gemima Kelly 6. George Washington Gilley (GILLY) was born 1810 married 1 March 1836 to Nancy Saylor from Jonesboro, Tennessee. Nancy was born 1818. They had 12 children. 7. John Barger Gilley born 5 August 1805/6 Powell Valley (near Big Stone Gap) married Mary Polly Huff The marriage records of Carter Co. TN show that one Joseph Saylor married Delilah Cats 8 March 1829. The marriage records of Carter Co. TN show that one Absalom Gilley married Mary Clark 20 Oct. 1833. The marriage records of Washington Co. TN show that one Abraham Gillis married Polly Saylor there on 12 Oct. 1837. The Missouri Birth Certificate of Sarah View states her date and place of birth as 1 May 1838 in Tennessee. She was born Sarah Gilley, married first in Missouri to James Foster, and married second Thomas View. She had removed before the 1860 census from Tennessee to Benton Co. Missouri with her aunt Sarah Saylor, who had married John Wolf before the removal to Missouri. The marriage records of Washington Co. TN show that one George Gilley married Nancy Sailor there on 1 March 1838. An obituary in THE LOWRY CITY INDEPENDENT, a newspaper published 1 June 1922 in Lowry City, Missouri concerns the death of Mrs. Catharine Miller in Carrollton, Missouri 28 May 1922. She was born Catharine Gilley 3 May 1840 in the state of Tennessee and married 8 November 1860 in Missouri to Francis M. Miller, Sr. She had removed before the 1860 census from Tennessee to Benton Co. Missouri with her aunt Sarah Saylor, who had married John Wolf before the removal to Missouri. The 1840 federal census of Carter Co. TN shows Absolom Gilley age 20 to 30 with others in his dwelling: 1 Female age 20/30; 1 Female 5 to 10; and 1 Female under age 5. The 1840 federal census of Carter Co. TN on page 186 shows the dwelling of George W. B. Gilley. The residents are: 1 Male under age 5; 1 Male age 30 to 40; 1 Female age under 5; 1 Female age 20 to 30. Two old letters that I received about 25 years ago say that George Washington Gilly who was born in 1810 in Virginia had 12 children with his wife, Nancy Salyor. One son, named John Bufford Gilly was born 19 Dec. 1838 at Jonesboro, Washington Co., Tennessee. This John Bufford Gilly was married 11 Dec. 1859 in Big Stone Gap, Virginia to Elizabeth Emarantha Jones. She was a daughter of Isaac Jones and Polly Watson Davis. The 7 December 1840 session of the Carter Co. TN Court ordered that George Gilley be summoned as a juror. Carter Co. Tennessee show that John Saylor married Martha Scott on 20 February 1848. (John Saylor, in his will written 3 Nov. 1854, calls her Patsey Saylor, widow of his son John). The marriage records of Carter Co. TN show that one George Gilley married Martha G. Clark there on 27 Oct 1849 and Absolom Gilley signed the security bond. The 1850 federal census of Carter Co. TN lists the persons living in dwelling 41: Absolum Gilly age 36 born in Virginia Mary Gilly age 36 born in Tennessee Sarah Gilly age 10 Catharine Gilly age 9 The 1850 census of Washington County, Tennessee lists the persons living in the following dwellings: dwelling 398: John Saylor 75 M PA Elizabeth " 74 F VA Godfrey " 36 M TN Susannah " 29 F TN Elizabeth " 37 F TN Sarah " 34 F TN Sophrona " 17 F TN David " 9 M TN John " 5 M TN Geo " 5 M TN Enoch " 11 M TN dwelling 399: Nancy Scott 52 F VA Patsey Saylor 32 F NC Jackson Scott 22 M TN Hugh Scott 18 M TN dwelling 400: Jane Barnes 10 F TN Sunus Crusenberry 36 M VA Mahala Crusenberry 32 F VA Saphrona Saylor 16 F VA Thos Crusenberry 15 M VA Lewis A Crusenberry 10 M VA Gordon Crusenberry 4 M VA Elizabeth Crusenberry 1 F TN dwelling 416: Martha Clemons 40 F TN Jos Clemons 20 M TN Susan Clemons 19 F TN Wm Clemons 17 M TN Mary Clemons 18 F TN James Clemons 14 M TN Margaret Clemons 12 F TN Benj Clemons 9 M TN Nancy Clemons 5 F TN Hannah Clemons 4 F TN Martha C Clemons 1 F TN Wyett Clemons 51 M TN dwelling 417: John Woolf 53 M VA Polly A Woolf 30 F TN John Woolf Jr 18 M TN Margaret Ore 5 F TN An item in the IGI (International Genealogical Index) indicates that one William Clemons married Sophronia Saylor 13 July 1851 in Washington County, Tennessee. One John Saylor of Washington County, Tennessee made his last will on 3 November 1854. The will is recorded in Washington Co. TN Will Book I, page 561. John Saylor's will mentions his daughter, Polly Gilley, deceased. It also mentions her daughters, Sophrona Smith, Sarah Gilley, and Catharine Gilley. John Saylor's will mentions his son-in-law, George Gilley. John Saylor's will bequeaths, "... to my Grand Children Godfrey Saylor & Sophrona Saylor Heirs of my son Joseph Saylor dcsd ..." Among the children listed in John Saylor's will are; Isaac Saylor; Godfrey Saylor; John Saylor whose widow is Patsey Saylor; Elizabeth Howard, wife of John Howard; Nancy Gilley, wife of George Gilley; Hannah Bogart, wife of Lemuel Bogart; Margaret Odle, wife of William Odle; William Saylor; Henry Saylor; Abraham Saylor; Joseph Saylor, deceased, whose heirs are Godfrey Saylor and Sophrona Saylor; Polly Gilley, whose children are Sophrona Smith, wife of William Smith, Sarah Gilley and Catherine Gilley; and Sarah Saylor. These two marriages are recorded in Washington Co. TN on the same day, 27 December 1855: John F. McFall married Sophrona Saylor John Wolf married Sarah Saylor. In a 12 February 1858 Court settlement of the subject testator's estate a Sophrona Saylor, daughter of Polly Saylor, is mentioned. She is not designated as Sophrona Smith in this record. It seems to me that Polly (Mary) Gilley may have had a daughter, Sophrona, out of wedlock, then later have married Absalom Gilley and had Sarah and Catherine Gilley. I intend to continue the search to clarify some of the obvious mysteries involved in this story. Advice and help would be appreciated. 1. [VALEE-L] Leah Catherine Spears/ Daughter of John Spears?
    2. Patricia Hobson
    3. I finally located my Spears great-great grandmother on the 1860 Scott County Virginia census, in the Estillville post office area, on page 437 of the census. The listing reads: John Spears, 28, m, farmer, 100 (column 9), born VA Amy Spears, 26, f, spinster, born VA James ", 9, m, VA Catharine ", 7, f, VA Lucinda ", 5, f, VA Josaphine ", 1, f, VA ________________________________________ I'm unsure abt the census taker's use of "spinster" here. I also noted that there were two Spears in the household listed just previous to John Spears, the household of WIlliam Collins, farmer. A Lucy A. Spears is included as a 25 year old spinster born in VA, and an Adam Spears, a 19 year old male is included as a farm hand. _________________________________________ I believe that the 7 year old Catherine is my great-great grandmother, who married John C.B. Slone in Montgomery County Kentucky in April of 1878. 1. With regard to the proper name, family tradition has always referred to her as "Leah Catherine" or "Katty". 2.The ages match as she is listed on the marriage bond as being 22 years old in 1878. 3. Thelma Dunn's book on Montgomery County Marriage bonds 1876-1881 states that there was a note of permission "from John Spears and Amy E. Spears, parents of Leah C. Spears" to marry John C. Slone. The bond states that they were to be married 14 April 1878 at the home of John Spears. On the negative side, was Amy E. Spears Leah's birth mother or step-mother? If James was 9 and Amy 25 in 1860, that would have made her a pretty young mother--- but certainly not unheard of. John C.B. Slone's family came from Lee county, KY. By 1870, both John and his father Samuel were listed on the Menifee county KY census, with their families. John was listed on his marriage bond as a wagoner; but in the 1870 census he was listed as a miner. They lived in the Slate Creek precinct, and later all moved to Laurel County, KY. I assume they were following the coal. The family "tradition" of young brides continued with John and Leah's son, Benjamin Jefferson Slone, who married Della Etta Noe when she was 14! ______________________________________ Can anyone confirm John and Amy E. Spears marital status? Can anyone tell me who their respective parents were? Also, I have no death date for Leah Catherine Spears Slone (maybe if she could have settled on one name I could track it down!) Anyone who can help me untangle any of this mess will earn my eternal gratitude! Pat H.

    1. [VALEE-L] Stapleton, Cooper & Sprinkle
    2. Margaret L Sopp
    3. Hello Everyone: My name is Margaret Sprinkle Sopp and I have just now subscribed to the Lee Co. List. I subscribe to Rootweb's personal message list ("PML") and Sprinkle is one of the surnames on my list. Thus, I just received a copy of Kim Shearer's post to the List regarding the Stapleton and Cooper families. I thought maybe I'd better just subscribe to the Lee Co. List. Kim mentioned that Ressie Stapleton Cooper Seymore was the daughter of Green and Cora (Sprinkle) Stapleton. I collect information on all Sprinkle families (many of them in Lee Co.), but I do not have Cora Sprinkle in my database. Who were her parents? By the way, I was just in Lee Co. two weeks ago doing research (on the Sprinkle family, of course) at the court house. As a city girl living near Chicago, I really enjoyed the Lee Co. countryside. Very beautiful. Margaret

    3. Dear "BARB", Likewise, NO NEED TO FLAME ME EITHER! .. FURTHER, the US Postal quote: "SERVICE" was JUST THIS MONTH, D E N I E D by congress to AGAIN raise their rates, and WERE F U R T H E R told to take SOME OF THE FAT out of their OVERSTUFFED MANAGERS [at P.O.] POCKETS!! I don't mind alittle criticism But, when my self-designated opponent has THEIR FACTS WRONG... C-mon! I didn't take the time to write my essay just to give you your once-in-life fifteen minutes of FLAME! CHOOSE SOME OTHER PERSON TO PUT ON YOUR LIFE'S CROSS! Myself and several OTHER family members actually WORKED FOR THE DAMN POSTAL SERVICE, AND KNOW FULLY WELL THEY HAVE HONEST HARD-WORKING EMPLOYEES, But similarly, I was in the company of congressman Hoyer [D. MD] when on a tip FROM ANOTHER POSTAL EMPLOYEE found SEVERAL post offices at fault for dumping TONS of FIRST-CLASS MAIL into DUMPSTERS [i.e. Washington Postal Hub at Central Avenue, Landover Maryland]. CONTRARY TO YOU, Here's SOME of the responces I have recieved on this subject JUST SINCE IT WAS POSTED: QUOTE # 2: "If you will point the way, I will be glad to follow suit with filing a formal complaint also. " QUOTE # 2: "Hi Bill! Add me to your growing list of infuriated taxpayers! I've been at this genealogy nonsense for over 35 years, & the FOIA (especially SSDI) was a real step in the right direction...but now they've turned tail and sped off in the opposite direction! " QUOTE # 3: "Why not do a petition ? There is an on-line petition site." QUOTE # 3: "Can we find a high-profile media person (or group) who might like to make a few scratches on the good ol' U. S. Gummint with this $7-to-$27 story? Or some politicos? (I see from your choice of Congresspersons that you're from Maryland. My home was in Arlington & Falls Church before I abandoned the Cuckoo's Nest and headed south.) " QUOTE # 4: "Best of luck in your efforts! Please keep the rest of the world informed!! 3. No need to flame the US Postal Service because you are angry at another agency. Where else can you send a 1 oz. letter across the country or to Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico, VI, CA, FL, ME, etc for only 34 cents? 1. [VALEE-L] FOIA WASTE OF OUR MONEY
    2. B. Wood / K. Hall
    3. Dear family members, I was VERY pleased to hear from all of you regarding the low-down audacity of the Social Security Administration's FOIA group to increase the cost of requesting a COPY of a loved one's original Social Security Application from $7.00 to $27.00! ..This is nearly a 400% increase! Not even the US Postal service has the nerve to jump that high on postage cost for a first class letter! Some of you were [justifiably] surprised that ' I ' had JUST found out about this corruptive nerve of the US Government. I have been quite ill for a few month's during and following the advent of this rate increase, and have thus been unable to resume my research, and helping the research of others. I'm glad to announce the return of my health. With that, I fully intend to protest this flagrant act of greed which blatantly defeats the 'spirit of the law' to which the FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT is supposed to address; ".. to make, at nominal processing cost, public documents available to the tax-paying citizens of the United States of America, the information to which their tax dollars have already been siphoned." Obviously, the truth of the matter is this branch of the government is corrupt and riddled with profound greed! In the letters I have since received from many of you, you too share in my utter contempt and complete awe of such insubordination of this branch of government! We are ALL in the genealogical interest of truth. Not only 'our-family's history' but also the ability to unveil to our friends and neighbors the 'world's history's via this once-affordable "wrecking-ball" which was once able to knock-down many historical "brick walls' in the pursuit of our true lineage. I am in the process of filing a formal complaint with local Senate and Congressional legislators such as: Barbara Mikulski, Steny Hoyer, Paul Sarbanes. In fact, I have filed my-own FREEDOM OF INFORMATION request, to have SOCIAL SECURITY JUSTIFY this spineless slap in the face of all taxpayers. THIS IS NOT A GOOD REFLECTION OF THIS ADMINISTRATION IN THE AREA OF FAMILY VALUES! In dedication to our common objectives, Bill Wood
