Thanks to everyone who e-mailed with info. I guess the cemetery I'm looking for has not been published as of yet (maybe Vol. 3?). Either way, I appreciate everyone of you for taking time to look and respond to me. You are the best. Kim
Hello Harold and welcome to the Lee List: I'm sure that the "Withville" you heard about is the same place as Wytheville. We northerners would pronounce it using the "y" but it's my understanding that the locals pronounce it "With." I'm not sure if I can help you or confuse you. . . but my SPRINKLE family does have a connection to the James GREEN you mention. Some background. Jacob SPRINKLE was first taxed in Rockingham Co. in 1802 and then shows up in Wythe Co. tax records in 1809. He remained in Wythe Co. through 1818 and then moved on to Tazewell Co., which is where he appears on the 1820 census. He disappeared between 1820-1830, but his wife, Polly, moved on to Lee Co. around 1828-1830. Jacob SPRINKLE had a daughter named Lucinda. She was born in the range of 1804-1810 and married James Green 22 Dec 1827 in Tazewell Co. James GREEN was enumerated in Lee Co. on the 1830 census as follows: 1 male under 5 1 male 5-10 1 male 20-30 1 female under 5 1 female 20-30 Lucinda SPRINKLE GREEN had a son prior to her marriage to James GREEN, and he might be the male 5-10. The other two children would belong to James & Lucinda and have been born 1828-1830. In 1840 James GREEN and family lived next door to "Berlinda SPRINKLE," in Lee County, Virginia. I believe Berlinda is Malinda, who was probably Lucinda's sister. The James GREEN household consisted of: 1 male 5-10 1 male 10-15 1 male 30-40 1 female under 5 1 female 5-10 1 female 10-15 1 female 30-40 Lucinda apparently died between 1840 & 1850, as in 1850 James GREEN is enumerated with a new, younger wife. Some of the children in the household, of course, belong to Lucinda. . .but I'm not sure exactly which children belong to which wife. 1850 Census, District 31, Lee Co., VA, pg. 354: James GREEN, 48, farming, $800, b. VA, cannot read or write Mary, 30, b. TN, cannot read or write Boswell, 21, farming, b. VA, cannot read or write Luthena, 18, b. VA Justine, 14, b. VA Henderson, 11, b. VA Morrison, 9, b. VA Vance, 4, b. VA In any event, to bring this to a close, it seems possible your Nathaniel Green was related to James Green. . .but your Nathaniel, born 1822, seems too old to belong to James & Lucinda. . . unless he is the male 5-10 on the 1830 census and might belong to an unknown-to-me earlier wife of James (purely way-out speculation). But this James Green (according to the 1860 census) was indeed born in Wythe Co. There are several men named Nathan/Nathaniel Green who were head of household on the 1850 VA census index, but none in Lee or Wythe. So we haven't found your Nathaniel. . .but at least you know a little more about James Green! I'm hoping someone else reading this will recognize some of the "participants" and post additional information!!! Margaret
My name is Harold GREEN and I have been searching for a LONG time for the origin of my gr grandfather, Nathaniel GREEN. His obit says he came from "Worth" County, Virginia and that he was born in 1822. An old uncle told us his grandpa came from "Withville, Virginia". I am assuming that is Wytheville, Wythe County? All I do know is that he came to Clay County, Indiana, late 1857 and married Charlotte WOOLF ELY in January of 1858. They are said to have had 16 children but I only find records on 9 so far. I do find this family in the Clay County Census for 1860, 1870 and 1880. Of course the 1890 census is missing, then he died in 1897. I am not sure where he was prior to 1857? I am writing to Lee County also because I recently received a copy of the Lee County history book and it details a Morrison GREEN born 1842 in Lee County, the son of a James Green born 1800 in Wythe County. I have seen one record that states my Nathaniel GREEN's father was a James GREEN. Could be the same James GREEN? Would be really nice if anyone in Wythe County or Lee County or anywhere else knew about the parents, siblings, etc. of this Nathaniel GREEN. TIA Harold W. Green Indianapolis, IN greenealogy@juno.com
If anyone has access to Cemeteries of Lee County VA, Vol. I could you please check for a NAPIER CEMETERY. My great great grandparents, James Huff Napier & Rebecca Green Napier are buried there. The cemetery is situated on land once owned by their son, Finly Napier. I was there back in May but was in such a hurry, I didn't check out the other graves in the cemetery. I was told later by my great uncle that they were relatives. Could someone send me a listing of all the graves in the cemetery? I would greatly appreciate it. Kim
Hello once again: Thought I'd send out one more post on another of the mysteries connected to the SPRINKLE family . . . then I promise not to bug you all for a while :-) Do any of you research the surname FRY? Or perhaps FRYE? One of my quests when I was at the Lee Co. court house this summer was to find out the details of the crime Napoleon SPRINKLE committed that landed him in jail in Henrico Co. at the time of the 1850 census. From the census, we knew Napoleon was incarcerated for shooting. . .but no details. The Lee Co. court house personnel weren't too encouraging about me being able to find that type of record from so long ago. . .but they set my daughter and me loose in the basement of the courthouse and. . .eventually. .. I found exactly what I was looking for in the Common Law Order Books. The Common Law Order Books were very informative and described his crime in detail. It turns out that there was an argument and he shot his stepson. The stepson was referred to in the account as "Fry." His first name is never mentioned. The account indicates he was Napoleon's wife's illegitimate son, born prior to their marriage. I checked the 1850 census for Lee Co. but could not find any FRY families. This stepson would probably have been born prior to 1830. We have reason to believe he may have later have gone by the name of Daniel SPRINKLE. . .or I should say, we know there was a Daniel Sprinkle and it seems possible he is "Fry." But no proof. Marriage records in Wythe Co. show that Napoleon married Cynthia SURAT, 9 Sept 1830. However, when son Daniel Sprinkle died, his death certificate shows that his parents were Napoleon SPRINKLE and Cynthia FRY. Odd. So I'm not sure about Surat vs. Fry. But if anyone has any information on a FRY family in Lee Co., please let me know. Margaret

Hello Everyone: Does anyone have access to the 1870 census for Lee Co.? I was wondering if the family of George CADLE and wife Margaret appears. They lived in Rose Hill, Lee Co. in 1880, and I believe they were in VA in 1870. In 1870, George would have been about 33 and Margaret about 28. Margaret's maiden name was SPRINKLE. Margaret was a daughter of Napoleon SPRINKLE and Cynthia SURAT, who moved to Lee Co. from Wythe Co. sometime between 1830-1835. Happy to exchange information on any of these surnames. Thanks for your help. Margaret
I found an index for a deed 1821 ,James Walling and wife to John Mckinney Jr. .If someone there in Lee Co. has access to these records I would like to know particulars of this deed. My ancestors were from an area called White Shoals in Lee Co., VA. Can someone tell me what cemetery may have been used in the late 1800's and early 1900's for that area? Thanks.
Is this cemetery listed in the "Cemeteries of Lee Co." books or does anyone know of any list detailing those who are buried there? How big is this cemetery? I read an article from 10-16-2000 concerning this cemetery at the following address. http://www.vdot.state.va.us/info/News/Bristol/nrBR10162000_hearing.html This article mentions that this road project would have an impact on 2 cemeteries, what is the name of the other? Thank you! Terri Huffman Saylor

I've been searching for many months now to find the parents of Elizabeth Causey Boggs. I just received her birth certificate and there is NO information on either of her parents. My father, her grandson, told me that Elizabeth was a Causey before marrying Elisha Boggs. I'm assuming that was her maiden name since there is no indication of children by a previous marriage. Elizabeth was born about 1866(in Leslie County KY according to the death certificate). She married Elisha Boggs(b. 1859 in Lee County VA) at an unknown time and location. Elisha Boggs died in 1934 in Leslie County KY. About 1940, Elizabeth moved to Jackson County KY with my grandfather, Arthur Boggs, and his family. She died in Jackson County in 1948 and is buried at Cornett's Chapel Cem. in Jackson County. I'd welcome any guidance as to her background.
