    1. [VALEE-L] Rogers Family of Lee Co.
    2. GEN-PICS
    3. Working on the early Rogers families of Lee Co. associated with the name of Doswell Rogers. In the 1790's there were three men named Doswell listed on the tax lists before 1810 and the deed records from the 1790's to 1809. I believe them to be the following people: 1. The oldest known Doswell Rogers who was b. 1736 according to the Rogers family Bible had a wife in 1792. She was named Ann on the Wythe Co. deed records. It is believed that she died as she never appears to have signed away any dower rights in Lee Co. 2. Doswell Rogers married to Catherine. They are gone by 1810 and are listed in Bledsoe Co. TN on the reconstructed census. Do not know the relationship to the older Doswell. Sold property before leaving Lee Co. 3. Doswell Rogers married to Nancy. Believe him to be the son of the old Doswell b. 1736. He apparently is the Doswell that died in 1809 and is listed in the Rogers family Bible. I believe his widow is the Nancy enumerated in later years on the census records in Scott Co. After 1810 none of these men are on the tax records, deed records, or censuses . It can only be assumed that the old Doswell had sold all of his property to sons, etc. He last appears on the 1812 Lee Co. depostion that was taken in a land dispute. He is not on the 1820 Scott census where his land fell with the creation of Scott Co. I don't know what happened to Doswell and Catherine after they moved to TN. Any help from descendants of these men would be appreciated. Eleanor

    1. [VALEE-L] BADTRANS virus
    2. Sorry for a posting off-topic, but I know many of us on the list have been infected with this virus (in fact, that's how I caught it too). I want to ask whether anyone else who had the badtrans virus also had a problem with the financial records on their computer? We attempted a fix on mine a couple of days ago, and the accounts in MSMoney were wiped out. Fortunately I had a floppy backup. We are trying to figure out whether it was a virus that deleted them, or something we inadvertently did while trying to get rid of the virus. Also, since my computer's still "buggy", don't open any attachments from me unless you have specifically asked for them. Vanette Hobbs Hamilton

    1. [VALEE-L] BrickWall - Stewarts
    2. Richard Carlyle Stewart
    3. Hello - My name is Rick Stewart. I live in Louisiana but am originally from SW WVa. My family lines eventually settled in Logan, Boone, and Jackson Counties. I have a fair amount of info on most lines, but I find myself stuck on the Stewarts. I am prSesenting what info I have in the hopes that someone might connect. Robert Stewart - born 1782-1787 in VA per census info; by 1840 Robert and wife Mary Unknown had settled in now Mercer Co., WVA - between Princeton and Bluefield. Robert might have been a blacksmith. Son Elias Stewart - born 1816-1817 in VA; died 1882 Boone Co., WVa-may have been a blacksmith as well; Elias married Rebecca Belcher circa 1842. I am unable to trace Rebecca's parentage but suspect she was from Mercer Co. Rebecca was born Jan., 1828; Elias and Rebecca had 13 children. They migrated to Boone Co., WVa in the mid 1860s. Rebecca died in 1900 in an auto accident of all things. Robert and Mary Stewart, my ggg grandparents, must have had two other children at least: John Stewart born 1826 and Mary Stewart born 1828 all per Mercer Co. censuses. Elias and Rebecca had the following Stewart children born between 1843 and 1867: Mary Ann, James H., Frances E., Martha, William Lawson, John H., Giles Wesley, Ida, George W., Micajah Preston, and Elias Jr. I do not know the names of the other two children. It is possible that Robert and Mary lived in Giles Co. in 1820 and 1830 per census but the info is not conclusive. It is beginning tp appear that Robert and Mary may have come from SW VA counties further south than Giles. I would appreciate any information. I have been searching for a very long time. Also, there appears to be a tie-in between Robert and a man named WILLIAM LAWSON. Thank you very much. Richard Stewart

    1. [VALEE-L] Mary E. CLARK(STON) MOORE -- Killingsworth Cemetery
    2. B. Perry
    3. I have recently found information that my gg grandmother Mary Ellen CLARK(STON), who m. Thomas Benton MOORE, is buried in Killingsworth Cemetery. Can anybody give me directions to this cemetery? I will be in Big Stone Gap this weekend. Also, I am trying to determine which Thomas and Nancy CLARKSTON are Mary Ellen's parents. Lee Co., Virginia Death Records, vol. 1, compiled by A. G. Catron, 1968, LDS Film 975.5735, pg. 141: Mary Ellen MOORE, 31 yrs., 5 mos., d. January 22, 1887, Crab Orchard; parents: Thomas and Nancy CLARKSTON; Thomas B. MOORE, husband. Mary Ellen was b. 1855, according to the death record. Is she the dau. of Thomas CLARKSTON, Jr. and Nancy WEAVER? Also in Lee Co. during that time is Thomas Hiram CLARKSTON and Nancy CLARKSTON HOSKINS, but I have a marriage date of 1865 for them. Anybody have any ideas? Regards, Beverly Reach Perry Huntsville, Ala.

    1. [VALEE-L] Cemeteries on US 23
    2. Hi Wayne, I have the program Street Atlas 8. When I zoom in on the area you describe, going south on US 23 near the community of Jasper there are 5 cemeteries shown (little crosses) 3 on the left and 2 on the right. There is also one at the end of SR 817 west of Jasper. About a 1/2 mile to 1 mile south of the Wise county line on US 23 there are 3 more. going south 2 on the left and 1 on the right. One of the ones on the left is on a road across from SR 900 near a railroad track. Don't know if any of this helps or not. Hope it dose. 1. Re: [VALEE-L] Cemetery Location/Names
    2. Jean Steele
    3. Try ordering a county map for Lee. They will show where known cemeteries are in their county. or try using the internet map sites: Duane Mills from Claiborne County site sent this: http://geonames.usgs.gov/gnishome.html 1. Click on the United States and Territories 2. A query form will come up. Choose location. I chose TN and Grainger Co. 2. Don“t bother to type in the feature name you are looking for. Go down to feature type, and choose cemeteries, for example. There are many other options such as Church, Valley etc. 3. 156 cemeteries were listed by name and location. You can then choose among options for print, download etc. The fifth down (Show Feature Location) will actually present you with a map of the US with the location of the feature and another map showing the general location with reference to other features (towns) around. You can even zoom in if desired with the links at the bottom. 4. You can print out or download all maps in any detail you pick. 3. Hello All: I made a "mad dash' trip to Lee, Wise and Scott counties over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. I needed a dose of the Hills and Hollers that I left many years ago. Even though the weather was not conducive to taking pictures of the wonderful views, I did manage to get a few that I will be posting to my Hills and Hollers Website soon. While there I attempted to locate the burial sites for my (natural)grandparents on my maternal side. I am fortunate enough to have 3 great family lines to trace. (paternal, maternal, and stepmother's!) Anyway, I have been told that these gravesites are located in the very farthest eastern end of Lee County along US23, along the four mile section of highway between Wise and Scott counties. I have made three attempts to find the particular cemetery, to no avail. My uncles tell me it is on the left side of the highway (if you are headed south on US23) and that it is a really old cemetery. Supposed to be a "blue house" with a pool at the entrance. Also, there is a "children's school" on the hill just before the entrance. Try as I did, I saw no house and I'm not real sure of the location of the "children's school." I think the school may be a detention center or halfway house for juveniles but I am unsure. Is there anyone out there that can perhaps tell me the names of the cemteries along that stretch of US23? Thanks for your help. Sincerely, Wayne Duncan

    2. In a message dated 11/21/01 5:53:49 PM Central Standard Time, VanetteHobbs writes: I have a Sarah Anglen m. to Joseph Spencer, Jr. I don't have locations; have his birth date as 1778, but his father Joseph Charles was b. 1738 in VA and died > in Poor Valley, Lee Co., in 1837. Could she be one of yours, and do you > have any better information than I do? > > Vanette Hobbs Hamilton ===================================== Vanette and Lee Co. Listers, Late last night, I pulled out my JOHN ANGLIN file folder and looked through it. What little I found raises more questions than it answers! In "The Tennessee Civil War Veterans Questionnaires Vol. II Confederate Soldiers" (Caldwell - Fuston), I found a form returned by a William Henry BLACKBURN, Burns, Dickson Co., TN. I have no idea who he was, but under question # "43. Maiden name in full of your mother:" he wrote Sarah Anglin, and "(nothing more)." Under (42) father's name, he gave, "Thomas C. Blackburn; (born) near Lebanon, Wilson Co., Tenn. ... (He lived at Cross Roads)" As I apparently failed to copy the entire list of questions (in a separate place in the book, apart from the veterans' answers) -- and this was some years ago -- some of his answers now are somewhat confusing! But he apparently stated that, "Mother owned 7 (slaves) for about 3 or 4 months before the war broke out." (These slaves apparently were an inheritance.) I have photocopies of John ANGLIN's will (dated 1814) and of (John's son?) Abner ANGLIN's will, date uncertain, possibly 1814, also, and of a couple of indentures. In one, dated 1808, Richard HYDEN "appointed John Anglin of said county (Lee Co., VA) my lawful attorney to act & do the same as I myself could in respect to a certain tract of Land on Wallens Creek," etc. The other, dated in April, 1820, is "between John Anglin (Jr.?) of the one part and Samuel Daugherty of the other both of the county of Lee and state of Virginia, " etc. (and also names "Polly his wife"). 2. Hi this is Don Fisher. If you receive a email from me with an attachment on it do not open. It would show up as You_Are_Fat!.MP3.scr this is a W32/BadTrans@MM Virus. It affects your Windows System Files. I was told that it only affected OutLook Express Program users, but it affected my machine. I think we have gotten rid of it with McAfee Anti-Virus Program, but it erased the Kernel32.exe File, so my machine is still not working at 100%. I don't know it it sent out Emails or not. Please Let Me Know. Thanks, Don Fisher

    3. Well, I got the virus this afternoon in an email from Pam Hall. (I don't know who that is, but the name sounded familiar, so I opened the attachment, duh). Of course, you don't want to do that. Luckily for me, I had updated my virus protection to cover the Badtrans.mm thing, so I was saved! If you don't have either Norton or McAfee virus protection (I have both) you are only kidding yourself. That is my little piece of wisdom for today. 2. Wayne Adams
    3. Today, I received a reply to my inquiry on Elisha Adams and Family from a "Clarkston." It had an attachment, but I did not open it. My Norton 2002 indicated that it had quarantined a virus, but did not state its origin. I sent the message back in the form of a reply, asking the sender to re-submit. I did this because Norton also scans my outgoing messages. I received a reply from "Mail Delivery Subsystem" stating that the address had permanent fatal errors, and that the user was unknown.
