Hi - Can someone tell me if there are books still available. I need to order one. Do I send to the Lee County Hiatorical and Genealogical Society. and is the cost still $56.50 (out of state)? Thanks - Helen in Indiana-
Just moments ago, I also received a VIRUS message from Margie Sweat's computer! Everyone MUST be alert to the ADDRESS on incoming e-mail that contains attachments; if a familiar screen name has an UNDERLINE preceding it, DELETE IT IMMEDIATELY and notify the person whose screen name has been altered! This is serious business for anyone, but especially those of us who have tons of genealogy data on our computers...and who have NOT BACKED IT UP THOROUGHLY! Other than that...Happy New Year, Lee Countians & Lee County researchers!! Gene Hyden (in New Orleans)
Today I received an e-mail from MARGIE SWEAT ms0491@highland.net with two attachments and a subject line from the VALEE mail list where I had posted a query. In the from line of the e-mail, Ms. Sweat's e-mail address began with the underscore ( _ ) before the e-mail address. Please Ms. Sweat, check your computer. Would someone who has access to the marriage records for Lee County be able to check for the marriage of JOSEPH R. KINCER (KINSER) and SARAH KIRK? The marriage should have been around 1852. Thank you. Bob Bray Cincinnati, Ohio

I am looking for any lead available for a Rev. Henry Greer, b. abt. 1829 in Claiborne Co. TN. He married Mary Ann Shelton abt. 1850 in Claiborne or Grainger Co. TN, where they are listed in the 1860 census. 1860 Claiborne Co. TN census: 1107 - 1107 Greer, Henry 31 Tenn. Greer, Mary A. 26 Tenn Greer Elizabeth 9 Greer, Sarah 7 Greer, Wm. 5 Greer, John 3 Greer, Andrew J. 3/12 ************* Henry and family migrated to Lee Co. VA sometime after the 1860 census. Henry is believed to have been a minister in both TN and VA. Note that son Henry H. below was born in Claiborne Co. TN and George W. was b. in Lee Co. VA. This means that Henry and Mary A. moved from TN to VA abt. 1865. Henry supposedly died abt. 1868/9 , near or just after the birth of their last child.. The reason is unknown. 1870 Lee Co. VA census, Jonesville ED, hh 521-534 Greer, Mary A. 35 keeping house, $150, Claiborne Co. TN Greer, Mary E. (Elizabeth) 18, TN Greer, Sarah J. (H?) 17 TN Greer, William J. 14 TN Greer, John M. 12 TN (John Matt) Greer, Andrew J. 10 TN Greer, Henry H, 6 TN Greer, George W. 4, Lee Co. VA Greer, Francis 2, Lee Co. VA After Henry died abt. 1868/9, the family is supposed to have dispersed, some staying in Lee Co. VA and others going to Hancock Co. TN. I have found no trace of Mary A as yet, but know she died sometime before 1907. I found no Greers in the 1880 Lee Co. census, at least for the two ED comprising Jonesville. Any lead at all appreciated -- possibly names of churches active at that time in Jonesville. Duane Mills Stavanger, Norway

I also would like to know more about the Alexander Creech listed in Owsley Co (or was it Breathitt) in the 1860 census as a school teacher- The 1850 Lee co census shows Alexander as the son of Elijah as an 8 year old son. The other Alexander is shown as 21 years old. Census error? another Alexander? Marsil ----- Original Message ----- From: "Cleland L. Back in the late part of November we were exchanging e-mails about who the 2nd wife of Elijah Creech was. I am totally confused with this line since Elijah is my Great-Great-Grandfather. Some documents say she was Nancy Spencer and some say she was Nancy Wells. I was in Lee Co. Virginia over the weekend and did just a little searching before the Library closed in Pennington Gap. In the marriage records it shows that Nancy Creech a widow married William Brewster on April 22, 1856. It also shows that her parents were William & S. Wells. I also find in the Early Settlers of Lee Co. where Elijah had a son named Elijah Green Creech and it says he was married to Nancy Spencer. Somebody help me get the Elijah's straightened out and who belongs to who. Thank you. Cleland @ cthorpe@bellsouth,net
Hi, Eleanor, Let me see if I have any information which might help with your various Doswell (sometimes spelled Dauswell, etc.) ROGERS. I have done a bit of research on the name, as my several-times gr.aunt, Martha (Patsy) VAUGHAN, born ca. 1795?, married a Doswell ROGERS, b. ca. 1790? in Virginia. They resided in Hawkins Co., TN, according to my records. They were married ca. 1815; he died between 1850-1860 in Scott Co., VA. I believe this Doswell ROGERS was the son of a Doswell ROGERS (son of Thomas?) ... and he possibly ALSO had a son named Doswell. You undoubtedly have seen the Laningham book, "Early Settlers of Lee Co., VA & Adjacent Counties," which lists one or more "Danswell Rogers," or, obviously, have seen some Lee Co. tax lists. Scott Co., VA Cemetery Records, Vol. 3, shows a Rogers Cemetery - Duffield #45 -- "Located across branch behind home of Echol Legg, p. 70. James J. (Jeff) Rogers Oct. 17, 1829 - Jan. 24, 1914, age 84 yrs. 3 mo. 7 das. (son of Dazewell [sic] & Patsy Rogers)." Hawkins Co., TN, census records for 1830 and 1840 show several Rogerses, including a Dozwell [sic]. Both husband and wife were between the ages of 60-70 in 1830, and 70-80 in 1840. Signers for a Petition for a New County, Scott County (Nov. 1813), included Thomas Rogers, Joseph Rogers, George Rogers, James Rogers, Danswell [sic] Rogers, and Joseph Rogers (again). Verna Banes, who has done extensive VAUGHAN research, once sent me some material from a Scott Co., VA Deed Book 14, Page 60, as follows: Martha Rogers Dowery laid off: Nimrod Adams and John B. Fickle, being the Commissioners appointed by the County Court of Scott, said dowery contains 20 acres and bounded as follows: begins etc. .............west to the original line of Dozwell Rogers ........and valued the above named boundary and consider the above amount designated by us the third of the estate of Doswell Rogers deceased, given under our hands and seals this 6th day of April 1867. (Martha Rogers Dowery in lands of her late Husband Dozwell Rogers.) (Copied by Eula Mae McNutt, P.O. Box 1092, Gate City, VA 24251) I responded to a query from Velma Rogers Tower (Elmore City, Okla) in the July 1992 issue of DISTANT CROSSROADS (Hawkins Co., TN). In her query, Velma showed the following timeline: 1765 --Thomas ROGERS was in the Cumberland Gap area when he was run off by the Indian uprising. (In her letter to me, dated 5 Oct. 1992, Velma Rogers Tower wrote that this Thomas "wound up in the Kyles Ford area." His date of birth is estimated as ca. 1740, so could he have been a brother to your "oldest known Doswell Rogers?") 1790 -- Thomas ROGERS was on the Hawkins Co., TN Tax List. 1810 -- Thomas ROGERS was on the Hawkins Co. Tax List with 50 acres and no pole. 1811 -- Thomas ROGERS Sr. made his will and it was recorded in Hawkins Co., TN Court Records. He divided his land equally between his sons, Dauswell and Thomas. He made provisions for his wife (not named) and four daughters Martha, Betty, Susanna who married a Lykins and Molly. 1812 -- Thomas ROGERS #2 and Dauswell ROGERS were on the Hawkins Co., TN Tax List with 75 acres each. According to Velma Tower, "There was a Thomas in Scott Co. whose wife was Nancy. They had 1 - daughter Nancy who married Samuel Henry Duff 2 - S. Joseph was acting as administrator of his father's estate when he died. 3 - S - Thomas who married Elizabeth Bishop. I have probate papers on him." Velma included a copy of her "Rogers Genealogy (letter to my children)" in which she stated as follows: "1- Thomas Rogers Sr. In the Virginia Magazine of History this account is given, "Thomas Rogers was living on the land in 1765 when he was driven off by Indians. The land lies in Lee Co. (Va) in the Cumberland Gap area, it had originally been improved by John Wallen about 1760. ............................................... "I have assumed that when the State Line between Tenn. and Virginia was finally settled that the land of Thomas Rogers sr. was on the Tennessee side near Kyles Ford...................(info about Thomas' will here) ...................." "Eleanor Rogers Edmondson in her book gave the name of the wife as Jean or Jane. I'm not sure of her source, but since the name Jane appears in the family of Dauswell, I tend to believe the name was Jane." She also enclosed a copy of Thomas Rogers' will and a photocopied page from "Eleanor Rogers Edmondson's book," which reads: "It is thought that Thomas Rogers was born about 1740 in Virginia. His wife's name was either Jean or Jane. Thomas wrote a Will on September 8, 1811, naming his wife ... and six children. He was living in Hawkins County, Tennessee at the time the will was written into Book 1, p. 414." She estimated Dauswell Rogers birth date at ca. 1765/1770, NC. Edmondson transcribed from Pollyanna Creekmore's Early East Tennessee Taxpayers as follows: Capt. Looney Co. 1810 Hawkins Co., Tenn. 1. Doswell Rogers 50 acs. 1 poll 2. Thomas Rogers 50 acs. no poll 3. George Rogers 0 acs. 1 poll 4. Thomas Rogers 0 acs. 1 poll William Nichols List 1812 1. Thomas Rogers 75 acs. 1 poll 2. Douswell Rogers 75 acs. 1 poll. I think that pretty much covers what information I have on several(?) Doswell Rogers ... and may only serve to muddy the waters rather than to be of much real help to you!
