    1. [VALEE-L] RE: Rev. Andrew Baker
    2. Fred Martin Jr
    3. Gale, The beginning of the article on REV. ANDREW BAKER in the Bi-Centennial History of Lee County, VA might be of interest to you also........ ...The earliest known ancestor of this Baker family is Andrew "Andy" Baker, b. c 1604 at Buckingham, England. He came to Boston MA about 1624. This Andrew's son, John Baker, was b. in MA. John Baker emigrated to PA or VA. John Baker was the father of Robert Baker, b. c 1655 in VA and d. 1728 Lancaster Co., PA. Robert Baker settled in Conestoga Twp, Chester Co., PA [later Lancaster Co., PA]. He bought 500 acres of land on the Susquehanna River from Col. John French. Robert and his sons were gunsmiths and were commissioned by the King of England to make fire arms for the Colonies. Later the Bakers would join the Colonies against England in the Rev. War. Children of Robert Baker are believed to the following: 1. Caleb Baker, d 1754 Amelia/Prince Edward Co., VA. He m. Martha Brooks Thomson. Robert [Jr.] and Mary Thomson Baker are believed to be the parents of James Baker, Esq. James Baker, Esq. was the first white man to hold title.......... At the end of the article is another paragraph that is pertinent: "This sketch is dedicated to Frieda Sims Nelson, Pueblo, CO, who researched many sourcs and references for information on the Baker family. Frieda also authored the book, ANDREW BAKER & HIS DESCENDANTS, 1975. Additional information was furnished by Mr. O.C. Helton, Beavercreek, OH. Submitted by Mr & Mrs John Wilson, 2940 Quitter Road, Williamsburg, OH 4517. Mr & Mrs Robert Dick, 2935 Quitter Road, Williamsburg, OH 45176." Jeanette

    1. [VALEE-L] 1749 Andrew Baker
    2. Edward Wallen
    3. If there are any Baker descendants on this list, I'm curious about your thoughts concerning the information about 1749 Andrew's parents in Bicentennial History of Lee Co, VA, p 159: "James Baker, Esq. was the first white man to hold title to land in the part of Wilkes County, which became Ashe County, NC. His children were: 1. Rev. Andrew Baker.... (2) Morris Baker, (3) Robert Baker, (4) George Baker, (5) Bolling Baker, (6) Eleanor (or Ellender) Baker, and (7) Martha "Patsy" Baker." For several years, on trees on line, it seemed the parents of choice for 1749 Andrew were 1720/2 Andrew & Bolling/Bolin. Now, I see James Baker m. Blount listed on some. Gale

His children were: 1. Rev. Andrew Baker...." Gale, this part is in the 2nd paragraph. Other listed children of James Baker, Esq. were (2) Morris Baker, (3) Robert Baker, (4) George Baker, (5) Bolling Baker, (6) Eleanor (or Ellender) Baker, and (7) Martha "Patsy" Baker. There are birthdates and spouses listed for most of the above seven children. The rest of the article is quite long, and mainly concerns Andrew Baker and his descendants. Hope this helps, Gail

    1. [VALEE-L] Dr. Ralph Stanley
    2. Hello all: I have just completed reading the book, Traveling the High Way Home by John Wright which is a grouping of interviews covering the life and times of Dr. Ralph Stanley. Being a huge bluegrass fan, I read every page with great interest. Also being from Lee County, VA, I have a great interest in the history of the area. As part of my Cultural Geography course in my Masters Degree in Education, I would like to do research and focus on his contributions to the culture of the southwestern VA area. If anyone could help by providing insight or genealogical information on Dr. Stanley, his upbringing, the towns of Clintwood, Coeburn, McClure, etc., or personal stories about interaction with him, I would be most appreciative. Sincerely, Wayne Duncan
