    3. Several recent list questions have focused on people or events that occured in S.W. Va. during the colonial period. The page listed below contains a description of "Pathfinders, Pioneers, and: Patriots", an extensive Historical CD I recently completed, with ordering instructions for those interested. Many of the sur names I've recently seen posted are represented on the CD. Many people interested in genealogy find that they gain a richer appreciation of their heritage as they learn more about the struggles their ancestors faced and the contributions they made. Also on the site is a link to a Free Historical Timeline that focuses on S.W. Va., E. Tenn., and E. Kentucky History (to 1800) that your readers might enjoy. Enjoy the free resource and share with your friends. http://www.mounet.com/~echo/ppp.htm Thank you for your time and assistance. Danny Dixon Echoes From the Past

    1. [VALEE] Summary of the four Hill families in Lee Co., KY
    2. John Schulke
    3. Thanks for writing. Please do give my name to anyone researching the Hill family there in Lee Co., VA. Below is a copy of what I've sent to the Lee Co., KY site. It lists the four Hill men that we are trying to figure out where they belong. They are all from NC but just yesterday someone sent me info on Samuel P saying he was in the Lee Co., VA census for 1880, then we find him 1900 in Lee Co., KY although he has a child by 1883 in KY. I'm trying to find census info for Lee for those years that I listed to see what names are there and where they are from. We are trying to tie back to the NC Hill families. Marge 1. William P Hill b 1816 NC comes first to Breathitt 1850 and is a tailor and jailor. He marries Nancy Hargis 1847 Owsley. 1860 he's in Owsley and dies before 1870 in Lee. But Lee came from these counties so it could be he was in the same place and it just appears that he was moving around. He says his parents are from NC. He seems to be the first Hill in the area. children: Mary, Robert, Wm P jr., Palla Alto, Samuel Pryse, Caleb Breckinridge 2. James A Hill b 1838 NC m Anna Beatty 1868 Owsley. James was in the Civil War in NC and says when he is released from Yankee prison in DL that he resides in Owsley Co and this is where WM P is at this time. We think that James A is a nephew to WM P. No proof. He also ends up in Lee Co., KY children: Emily, Elizabeth, Jeannie, Samuel, Mary 3. Joel H Hill b 1830 NC(according to the 1880 lee Co., KY Census)d abt 1882 Lee co. m Arena Moore abt 1864 and had Rufus (among others) and they are my g and gg grandparents. Joel names children's names same as some by WM P. Have never found him with parents or in any other census. Children are born in NC, VA and the twin girls Abba and Palla Alto b Lee Co., KY 1878. The family of Wm P has a dau named Palla Alto also among other similar names. children: Rufus, Mary, Phoebe, Henry, Walter J, John, James, Abba and Palla Alto (twins) 4. Samuel P(arker?) Hill b sep 1854 NC d 8 aug 1932 Lee Co., KY (mother and father NC) m 1872 Mary Ellen Jackson b May 1857 NC d 19 jan 1944 Lee Co., KY. He is in Lee by 1883 when dau Nancy is born maybe before. Children: 1.Annie M b 1873 m Howard D Goe and has Dovie, Farris, Willis, Otis, Mavis. 2.Emma b 1879 m David Coomer 1903 has Lucille b 1904 3.Nancy E b 1883 m 1901 Judd James Roland Jr. had Clayton, Dorothy 4.Robert b 1885 (no other info) 5.Samuel Kenton b 1888 d 1973 m 1910 Elsie Simms had Robert, Lenora, WM, Eugene, Earl, Samuel Parker Hill. (from this name I wonder if Sam b 1854 is a Parker) 6.Georgia b 1893 m 1913 Robert Lee Palmer had Vina, Carl, Robert, Hester, Samuel, Howard 7.Charles Dewitt b 1895 d 1969 m Minnie Davis 1918 dau of Charles and Sarah Powell Davis. children: Vergil 1919, Ethel G 1924, Jeanita 1927, mary 1927, Frieda 1928, Charles Edward Any help on these families appreciated. Are they connected or just four families that happen to come to Lee Co., KY.

    1. Re: [VALEE] Susannah (PENNINGTON) CHRISMAN
    2. Carmen, A lot of the info I have on the Penningtons came from your website. Here's what I have on Susannah and Abraham's children: Jane b. aft 1825 Ward b. aft 1825 Martha b. 1828 VA Susannah b. abt 1830 John Pennington b. aft 1830 Rebecca b. abt 1832 VA Edward P. b. Aug. 22 1835 Washington b. abt 1836 Abraham b. 1837 I got the info on the children from the LDS site; submitters are M. B. and Patricia Flanary, Memphis, TN Abraham was in Jackson County, Missouri by March 8, 1848 where he was named administrator of Elijah Flannery's estate. The following is an abstract found in Jackson County Wills and Administrations, 1828-1862 by Victor P. Meador, 1997: G-143* Elijah Flannery. Abraham Chrisman, sec. by Alexander Chiles & Nimrod Chrisman, makes bond of $700 to admn. estate. 8 March 1848. I don't know where Nimrod Chrisman fits. Also, from my notes: "There is an Edward Chrisman who married Susan Hightower in Jackson County, Missouri September 25, 1856. Another source has them married in Virginia." I don't know which Chrisman founded the bank here (someone bought them out 20 years or so ago; it was Chrisman-Sawyer Bank and I had my account there)--still searching. Never dreamed the bank founders were distant relatives! There are some interesting Civil War stories about the Flannerys/Flanarys in Jackson County. I have them married into the Penningtons several times. Let me know what interests you. Vanette

    3. Sally, I would love to have more information on the Livesay's. I have never been sure of the spelling of the name. I have seen it so many ways in the records. When I add information in my database of Lee County families, I try to spell the names consistently so that I don't have them scattered throughout. I may change the spelling in the database to Livesay now that I know how a 21st century descendant is spelling the name. I can also send you a listing of all the Livesay's (and other spellings) from my database. I try to include marriages and parents as well as dates of events if I have them. Thanks, Bonnie

    3. I am researching the Edmond Pace family and two of their daughters married Hills and were in Lee Co VA. This Pace family lived in Claiborne Co TN for a few years just prior to the Civil War, then returned to Lee Co. Census shows there were Hills over there, also. Mary "Poll" Pace married John Hill--we don't have the marriage record but estimated it about 1844. Frances Elizabeth "Lizzie" Pace married William J. Hill and I have a marriage date of 1854 for them. One of their descendants --Jim Hill of Ohio is researching them and I believe he gave me that year of marriage. Recently he wrote that he was having computer problems and not to try to contact him until he let us know that things were working again--haven't had the word yet that things are OK. I will be glad to give you his email whenever I do hear from him again or to ask him to contact you. He tells me that he grew up in the Rose Hill area and that his father was a coal miner. At one time they even lived in a "company town" when he was very young, he thought in Harlan Co KY, for about two years. Then they moved back to Rose Hill and his father walked over the mountain morning and night to Harlan Co where the mine was located. I believe Jim's sister also is researching but I have never had an address for her. They still have family at Rose Hill or in that area and visit there. He said that his mother was originally from Ohio, and they moved to Ohio where there was more work opportunities. And yes, his father died from lung problems from all the time he spent in the mines. The last I knew they had not proved who the father of their William J. Hill was. It is possible that John Hill and his wife "Poll" left the area, for we have not found them in later census, and Edmond Pace's will in 1885 stated that they had bought a farm from him and had not paid him for it, but they had sold it and he now gave them that as her entire part of his estate! Samuel P went on to lee Co., KY abt 1883. Joel was in Lee Co., KY by 1880 Were there other Hill families in Lee Co. VA? Does anyone have marriages for Lee co., VA who would share the Hill names? And does anyone have printouts of the 1850, 1860, 1870, or 1880 Census that would share the Hill names? All I have is the note on Samuel P being there in the 1880 census. Surely there were other family members there as well. Thanks for help. Marge

Kim Note: If you have several year to wait, the Wise County Historical is slowly reprinting Vol. 1 of Early Settlers in their newsletter. It started about a year ago. http://www.wisehistoricalsoc.org/wchs.htm check them out. 3. Hi All! I hope everyone is well - it is a beautiful day here in New England. I must begin by saying that I am not a computer person and perhaps this is incredibly ignorant of me to suggest, but there is no harm in asking, right? I am wondering if anyone has the resources to scan materials such as the "Early Settlers of Lee County" book for posting to Wayne's website as well as onto the Rootsweb/USgenweb site. I have seen other books posted on sites but am not sure what is involved to make that happen. Those who have resources (Ed, Milly, Kim, Wayne, etc.) have been very generous about sharing and helping those of us who are information-challenged. I would be willing to transcribe Lee County resources that could be snail-mailed to me and then posted for public searching and viewing, like census or marriage records. Thanks, Chaille __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? LAUNCH - Your Yahoo! Music Experience http://launch.yahoo.com
