    2. Mary Ann. I was told that many of the Hancock County records were destroyed in a fire many years ago. This makes it very difficult to verify what we think we know. I see you are an Anderson. Do you have any info on Morgan Anderson., my GGGGrandfather? He lived in that area and all the paper trail I need probably burned up in that same fire. Linda Anderson-Quinonez

    3. Although many records are destroyed Nashville sometimes has duplicate or different records which you should look into. Taxes, petitions, etc. often contain names. Also, if you ever want to sell the land you will find that they sometimes went back and had to rerecord. I was working a burned county and found where my ancestors had gone back 20+ years later to rerecord just the data I needed. Of course, this only works in the right time frame, but you never know if you don't research all the deeds after the fire. Thanks for any help, Bette Sutton Rodey Article below from 1935 OFFICERS SHOT AS THEY MAKE TRY AT ARREST Green Allen Brooks Accused of Killing Redmond and Bailey Arch Redmond and Bob Bailey, two deputy sheriffs of Lee County, were shot and killed this afternoon about 2:00 o'clock, at Denny's Place beyond Piney Spur, on the Virginia road, according to Chief of Police Charles H. Green Allen Books is alleged to have fired upon the officers as they went to his home to serve a fugitive warrant on Luther Poore, who was wanted in Middlesboro. Brooks is said to have used a high-powered rifle. He immediately fled, and is now being hunted. Poore was on the front porch when the shooting occurred. 1. [VALEE] Shepard/Wells
    2. Sheila, This is the Wells family I am referring to. The Zachariah you referred to who married Rebecca Shepard would have been my William Wells' uncle. The Zachariahs and Williams get really tricky in this family. My descendants are: 1-Zachariah Wells m. Abigail Osborne 2-William Wells m-Susan Ward 3-William S. Wells m. Mary (Mary Ann) Shepard. The only parent listed on the marr lic is Nancy Shepard. According to my records, Zachariah and Abigail Osborne Wells had the following Children: 1-William Wells m. Susan Ward 2-Thomas Wells m. Rebecca Blevins 3-Jeremiah Wells m. Elizabeth Culbertson 4-Robert Wells m. Elizabeth Shepard, dau of James Shepard 5-Zachariah Wells m. Rebecca Shepard 6-Elizabeth Wells m. Thomas Landers 7-Nancy Wells m. John O. Boggs 8-Jemima Wells m. John Sturgill 9-Abigail m. William Landers 10-Jacob Wells m. Johanna Shepard Of Zachariah and Abigail Osbornes children, my records indicate that William, Thomas, Jeremiah and Robert all had sons named William. Also, William, Thomas and Zachariah all had sons names Zachariah. As you can see, it gets really tricky trying to sort these people out. Also, the Shepard and Wells families intermarried a number of times. Therefore, I would have to assume the Mary Shepard who married William S. Wells was likely related to some of these other Shepards in some way. Judy

    3. Hi Linda. I have pretty complete Lee Co., Va. records. No Lee Co., Va. 10 Aug. 1864 marriage record was found for George Washington Spencer and his 2nd marriage to Emmaline Duncan. His first marriage was ro on 3 Aug 1832 in Scott Co., Va. to Elizabeth Brickey. They had 10 children b. in Scott Co. I suspect that his 2nd marriage to Emmaline Duncan, 10 Aug. 1864 may have been in Scott Co. ( Her parents are not listed). Also, Emmaline Duncan was not found in the 1850 or 1860 Lee Co. census, which leads me to believe that she was from Scott Co., Va. Unfortunately, none of this helps on the parents of Emmaline. Please e-mail me your postal mailing address if you need the Spencer genealogy. About $2.00 for copying and postage. Ed Cress, Oak Ridge, Tn. --- Edgar A.
