I cannot speak for the families that lived there but I believe that in theirs hearts Mulberry Gap was home and after they left there, they longed to go back, as we all long to find about our ancestors and where they may have been, lived, traveled. Shirley

Does anybody have these books that they could look up and see if there is anything on the surnames of Marable, Sowder, or Terrell. I would like to see so I can purchase them when they come out. Thanks Karen

Are you descended from Obediah Terrell who lived in the area briefly? THANK YOU * THANK YOU. There are a LOT of us that are going to be VERY happy!! Mary Ann Croley Barrett Researching Barrett, Vandeventer, Weston, Clark, Fields.
COMING SOON COMING SOON After literally hundreds and hundreds of requests, and after months of negotiating, the Lee County Historical and Genealogical Society has finally obtained copyright permission to reproduce volume I and volume II of "The Early Settlers of Lee County". This has been an extremely popular set of books, but has been out of print for some time. We hope to have them available in time for you to give them as Christmas presents. More detailed information to follow.
Hi Mary Ann, I'm descended from Robert Clark, son of Francis Clark and Judith Weaver. My tree has two Lee County Elisha Clarks (info based on other trees posted on the internet). One was born abt 1791 and married Margaret (Weaver?). They had a daughter, Lavina Clark, b Nov 1816, who married John Burchett. I also have an Elisha Clark, b unknown. who married Nancy?. They had a daughter, Martha Ann, b abt 1830, who married Isaac Weston. Since you mention both Clark and Weston, I wondered if either of these Elisha Clarks (or are they the same person?) are in your tree. If so, could you tell me who Elisha Clark's parents are? I can't connect him to the Clarks in my family but I suspect he is related. Janice Zengel Researching: Bishop/Clark/Clouse/Cole/Hopkins/Weaver MAB1939@aol.com wrote > > THANK YOU * THANK YOU. The 1834 TN GAZATEER does not list a Mulberry Gap. If it developed into anything more, it must have been later. Thanks Margaret, It sure was a busy little place I can just feature in my mind how far they had to travel to go to the post office. Shirley
the Url is: http://www.state.tn.us/sos/statelib/pubsvs/postoff6.htm Mulberry Gap Handcock Co opened first one 146 closed in 1894 they reopened in 1894 closed 1905 Mulberry Gap Claiborne CO TN opened 1829 Closed in 1846 Shirley
Well thanks to everyone on the list for info re Mulberry Gap, it might not interest all, but it sure does me, I am going to look up the URL for TN Postoffices and try to find the year that it was closed. I have saw an ariel map of the area in question and seen a lot of places I didn't think existed such as Gobbler's Knob, I thought that was just a saying of the people that lived in the Mt.'s but its for real. It's located probably near where this area is located just south of there in Tennessee. Shirley

The area is completely agricultural/rural. Hi, Wonder if back in 1860 Mulberry Gap may have been a little busier than it is now? On 1860 Hancock co TN census, my ancestor Andrew MARTIN is listed as living in Mulberry Gap District, Mulberry Gap Post Office. His profession is listed as "grocery" so there must have been a store in the area?? Close by is Lewis THOMPSON age 47, profession "tailoring" Solveig Berry
Shirley wrote: ><snip> I am going to look up the URL for TN >Postoffices and try to find the year that it was closed. Shirley, here's the link I posted to the List a few days ago. It has the information you are seeking. http://www.nostalgiaville.com/hills/hancock.htm If you scroll down at the site, you'll come to a section on Post Offices, which includes the following: Mulberry Gap Opened: 1846 Closed: October 3, 1866 Reopened: January 19, 1867 Reclosed: November 22, 1875 Reopened: March 17, 1867 Reclosed: September 29, 1894 Mulberrygap Opened: September 29, 1894 Closed: November 14, 1905 Margaret
That explains a lot to me about not ever being there. It really must be a beautiful place as so many of you refer to it. Thanks Shirley
