    1. [VALEE] Index - OOPS!
    2. Hi All, In the index list I sent, there is a error. The name CROUK should be COUK. For some reason, I put a R where it does not belong. (Senior Moment!) Carol Brown Braydic@aol.com "I Think That I Shall Never See, A Finished Genealogy"

    3. No matter what is done in the future with the information I believe that corrected information should be available on the internet in some form. That is how most of us are communicating about this now. Hopefully we can have a link on the Virginia Home Page and/or the Lee Co. Home Page to show this website. If you all hadn't talked about the original books I wouldn't have know there were any. Another thought, if we are not copying from the original volumes just stating references to pages and surnames where we know corrections are needed we shouldn't have any copywriter problems. Using a word like addendum says it isn't copied, just added on to. Also, information collected and donated to the new book from new contributor's research would be producing a new book! Or is that too simple? Thank you to all who have taken hold of this idea and are willing to give of your time and talents. You are very generous! 1. [VALEE] Early Settlers Index
    2. Hi All, Just thought I'd get everyone started. Below I have indexed the first five pages of Vol 1. I don't know how to or where to upload this information, but if anyone wants to cut and paste it, go for it! I wrote it using Microsoft Word 2000 if this helps. It looks nice and neat on my computer in three columns. I guess e-mail won't do columns. I figured this would at least get the ball rolling (maybe). Allen, C. F. - 5, Allen, P. 3. This would be a great addition to all researchers! New information keeps appearing because through the internet we are all able to bring more information about these families that otherwise has been kept within the families. We all have some piece of the puzzle. Joan GEN-PICS wrote: > What about those of us who have early settlers that were left out of the two original books? 2. Jack Barron
    3. Since I started this storm of activity on "Early Settlers" I'm willing to help index, up load, or anything else that is in my skill range or with instruction as to how to do the task. I have MS Word 2000 which I have used to Index a couple of books. It is not easy but doable. The last post I saw on the site location was from Wayne Duncan (Navyupm@aol.com) June 19 offering his site to update the information. I'm sure there would be a copyright problem if the entire book was put on a site without permission. However it would seem that correcting information would be acceptable to the authors, perhaps if there was no danger of causing the family to withdraw their offer to reprint someone at Lee Genealogy could approach the family to get their reaction to the question. I think we need the reprint first and then work on the correction/additions issue. Just a thought. Jack Barron

    1. Re: [VALEE] oops
    2. Marcil, I am basing my information on a researcher I have grown to trust. In 1997, she wrote a paper, "WELLS SISTERS WHO MARRIED CREECHES". In that paper she cited public documents that point to Nancy Wells, dau of William and Susan Ward Wells as having been married to 1-James Tompkins 2-J. Creech 3-William Brewster. She stated that Elizabeth was married 1- ____ Shepard 2-Mortimer Creech 3-William Blanton. She specificly stated: "Elizabeth Wells was listed as Elizabeth Crouch, head of household #104 in the 1850 census of Lee Co, VA, with children Sampson, Susan, William, Jonathan, and Elijah, and an adult, Susan Wells (age 74). The marriage of Elizabeth Creech, widow, to William Blanton was recorded in Wise Co, VA in 1856. According to the marriage register, her father was William Wells. Jonathan Creech married Sarah Elkins in the same county in 1860. The names of his parents were listed as Mortie and Eliza Creech. In an 1866 deed recorded in Wise Co, VA Elijah Creech of Wolfe Co KY sold to Jonathan Creech of Wise Co VA his interest in the estate of his grandfather's estate. In 1860, Jonathan Creech, Jr., had sold his interest in the estate of Jonathan Creech, deceased, as lawful heir to Mortimer Creech, deceased. The deed states that Mortimer was an heir of Jonathan Creech. These records indicate that Jonathan and Elijah Creech were sons of Mortimer and Elizabeth Wells Creech." I know this is complicated, but when the paper is viewed in whole, she lays out a very convincing case, from public records who these two women married and who the fathers of most of their children were. They were both married at least three times. If someone has anything different, I would love to see it. If anyone knows for sure which Shepard Elizabeth Wells was married to, I would really appreciate that, also. I am always open to new information. By the way, this author always includes in any item she writes that she is a descendant of William and Susannah Ward Wells and welcomes correspondence from those interested in the family. I don't believe she is on line, so it has to go U.S. mail. I found this paper at the KY Historical Society in Frankfort, KY. Judy

    3. It sounds like I keep giving people advice, but if a group of you are going to do a joint indexing project you might want to investigate some of the indexing programs so you all have the same format. An indexing program can save a lot of time and effort over the old way that I call "manual indexing with a computer"! To do that I have had to type each name with the page number behind it, then start deleting the duplicate lines of the same name, and put all the page numbers for that person up behind that one name.
