The SPRENCKEL > surname has probably evolved in SPRINKLE. There > are some of those folks still in Lee County. George William Laningham married Mary Catherine Sprinkle. Mary Catherine was the daughter of John M. Sprinkle & Sarah Elizabeth ("Sallie") Cox. It is my understanding that George Laningham & Mary Catherine Sprinkle's son, John Patton Laningham, married Rettie J. Haynes, daughter of Nentine D. Haynes & Emily Thompson. At the time of the 1910 census, John P.'s wife was Rettie J. The census indicates they have been married 10 years and that she has given birth to 5 children: Virginia, William, Leona, Frederick & Ray. Wayne is correct in that Sprenckel is one of the early spellings of the surname Sprinkle. The earliest spellings in this country (early 1720's) tend to be Sprenkel or Sprengel. Today, besides the Sprinkle spelling, you will find many descendants who spell their name Sprankle, Sprenkle, Sprinkles, etc. The Lee Co. Sprinkle family has pretty much consistently spelled their surname Sprinkle since they first arrived in Lee Co. between 1820 & 1830. I'm always happy to discuss and share & exchange information about the Sprankle-Sprenkle-Sprinkle family. Margaret Sprinkle Sopp

Carleene: We may have discussed this before, I believe I have corresponded with you before. The DUNCAN line you list may be decendants of C.T. DUNCAN who eventually became a judge in Wise County, VA. I have had to sort out the different lines of C.T and C.F. DUNCAN (I have found no connection between the families.) I don't remember much more than this about my research; since C.T. was not my ancestor. I don't have any of the folks you list in my files, but I could be mistaken. Your statement about two Floretta Haynes in Lee County is quite strong. I would not think that the possibility of two is very large. The SPRENCKEL surname has probably evolved in SPRINKLE. There are some of those folks still in Lee County. There were a couple of MINER children that I attended high school with in the 70s but I don't remember much about them other than that they lived in the Blackwater section of the county. I will be on the look out for any of your DUNCAN line as I research my owm. Best wishes for success in finding all you need to know! Thanks for your response, but your Martha "Mattie" is not the same person I am seeking. Mattie Chafin was the only grandmother my father knew from the Lawson line. Evidently he was close to her because he was almost the same age as Mattie's & Thomas' daughter. The daughter was named Pearl Lawson, born 1916. She married and lived 'above' Big Stone Gap VA. According to what I heard, Mattie Chafin was young and beautiful and had no other children before or after her marriage to Thomas. I'll see what I can dig up about her.
