Mark, - and anyone else that might help me sort out this family. Mark - Thanks for the marriage info on Ettie (Long) Rigsby and James Warf which lists her parents as Henry and Mima Long. The ages on the marriage record differs 2 yrs. from what I have on both of them. Heres' what I have:: James "Jim" Warf b. Oct 22 1872 (son of Joseph and Mary Ann "Polly" Dillman) married 1st in March 1894 in Lee Co., VA. to Mary J. Mink b. ca 1876 (dau. of William Mink & Martha ) They divorced in??? and he married 2nd to Sara Etta "Susan" Long on May 13, 1909 Lee Co., VA. b. Feb 16, 1889 (dau. of Henry Long and Mima - according to marriage record) She had previously been married to Unknown Rigsby and they divorced. She later married James E. Litterell b. May 5, 1901 (12 yrs younger than her) He also had two other wives - Jennie Jones and Lillie Rowlett. I'm not sure of the marriage order but think Jennie was before "Ettie" and Lillie was after. James and "Ettie" apparently divorced. I don't know if remarried but suspect that he did. I wish I had more ancestors that were monogamus. James warf had three children by "Ettie" I don't know if there were any other children to any of these relationships. I had previously thought that "Ettie" was a dau of Caleb (Cale) Long and Mina Katherine Fields. (could this be Henry and Mima) and his name was Caleb Henry or Henry Caleb Long??? He is burried along with 2 daus. Nellie May Long and Mollie Long in the Warf-Cole Cemetery in Lee Co., VA. I have that "Ettie" had a brother named Rice Long b. ca1890 and a sister Laura Long b. ca1892 but can't connect them to the parents. Can anyone help me with this mess????marriage dates of those not mentioned and census records for James Warf (1900 & 1910 Lee Co., VA.) and (1890 & 1900 & 1910) for Henry Long. I know this is alot to ask but perhaps someone will have this Long family in their tree and be able to help. Many thanks for your time and consideration. Don Warf

Don -- According to an entry on page 168 of "Lee County Virginia Marriage Register 2, 1885 - 1914," compiled by Elizabeth M Carpenter and Harold Peters: James Warf, age 35, divorced, born Lee County, Virginia (son of Joseph Warf and [no mother named]) married on 13 May 1909 in Lee County Etta Rigsby, age 22, divorced, born Lee County, Virginia (daughter of Henry and Mima Long). The marriage was performed by Isaac S. Anderson. I have finally (after many hours of scanning, resizing, indexing & Uploading) gotten the 1850 Agriculture schedule images up http://devoted.to/lbwelcome (scroll down to 1850 Agriculture schedules) These are the acutal images and each page will take a few seconds to load There is an index available as you will see and there are two pages. I have put the links to both pages next to the persons name. In order to find the persons information on the second page you will need the line number the person is on and use that to find their information on the second page. I wanted to put the actual images up because there are two pages and did not want to risk an error. The column headings are kind of blurry and hard to read so i have provided you with a extraction form that you can print and use to record information Hope everyone finds it useful Carol Turner

Who is the contact to purchase these records Lee Co. ancestors beginning in the 1790's up until ca 1860's should order the microflim for the Lee Co. Land Tax Books. Don Burke -----Original Message----- From: GEN-PICS [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, January 11, 2005 10:51 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [VALEE] Lee Co. Land Tax Books & Other Records Those of you who have early Lee Co. ancestors beginning in the 1790's up until ca 1860's should order the microflim for the Lee Co. Land Tax Books. These taxes are paid YEARLY and contain much data MOST of which is fairly accurate. Using these records plus the personal tax records, censuses, deeds, and court minutes I have been able to reconstruct Lee Co. Rogers families and find the destinations of where they went after they left IF they didn't sell their property. There are so many clues and vital information if one will use the records. The only catch is that you are dedicated in reading and researching records. It takes time and patience, but is well worth the time and effort spent. I wanted to add one more piece of supporting evidence. In the transcription of Lee County Births (1853 - 1873), compiled by Mark Treadway, the following entry appears on page 137: Date of Birth: June 10, 1870; Name: Mary Burkhart; Birth Place: Lee Co; Father: Noble Burkhart; Mother: Lavina Burkhart; Person Giving Information: Jeremiah Burgan; Relationship of person giving information: Uncle. The Reverend Noble Covey Burkhart married Lavina Lorene Blankenship (daughter of Arthur M. Blankenship and Lavina Jane Burgin) on 12 April 1863 in Harlan County, Kentucky. Lavina Jane Burgin was the oldest child of James Burgin and Nancy Ledington; Jeremiah Burgan was their second child. Since Jeremiah Burgan gave his relationship to Lavina's child as "Uncle" (actually, grand-uncle), this pretty well establishes the relationship. Mark Mark Walton email: [email protected] -----Original Message----- From: Walton, Mark (MA) Sent: Sunday, January 09, 2005 11:42 AM To: '[email protected]' Subject: RE: [VALEE] Burgan Phil -- The information that I have is that Lavina Jane Burgin was the daughter of James Burgin and Nancy Ledington. This is not the result of original research on my part that proves it for a fact, but there is strong circumstantial evidence to support it. In the 1850 census for Lee County, the family of Arthur Blankenship and his wife Lavina are listed. In the same dwelling and next visit are enumerated the family of Chapman and Mary Roberts and their daughter Rebecca (Rebecca J. Roberts was my wife's second great grandmother -- she would become the first wife of James Knox Bays in 1867). Mary Roberts was the proven daughter of James Burgin and Nancy Ledington, and was a younger sister of Lavina Jane. Mary Burgin Roberts and her husband Chapman separated in the mid 1850s and formally divorced following the Civil War. I have personally researched Chapman Robert's Civil War extensive pension files (he served for the Union in the 173rd and 181st Regiments of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry), and the family dirty laundry is spelled out there in intimate detail, but that is, as the saying goes, another story. In the 1860 census, Mary was living with her parents, along with two of her 3 living children. A fourth child apparently died as an infant, but we have no other information on this child. Rebecca, her oldest living child, was living with Peter Washington Bays and his wife Rebecca Burgin Bays (another of Lavina's and Mary's sisters). In the 1870 census, Mary and Chapman's son Jeremiah Brownlow Roberts was still living with his grandparents. His sisters had married by then. I have not done a detailed analysis of where each of these families lived in relationship to each other during the 1850 - 1880 census enumerations, but I suspect it would reinforce their close family ties. I hope this helps.
