From Cemeteries of Lee Co, VA, Vol. 1, p. 205 Lee Family Cemetery west of Rose Hill, VA: Leonard P. Long, 23 March 1920 -24 Dec 1989; s/o Robert and Hattie Arther Long; h/o Pearl Long Long Claude Long, 1913 - 24 Sep 1994; s/o Robert and Hattie Arthur Long; h/o Ruth Daniel Long I did not find an entry for Pearl Long. Leonard and Claude are the only Longs in the Lee Cemetery listing. Also, note that the maiden name of their mother Hattie is spelled Arther in the first entry and Arthur in the second. Can anyone tell me the best place to look for records of property ownership in Lee Co, especially around 1890. Also, in Hancock Co, TN. I am trying to locate the exact location of someone at that time and since there was no 1890 Census I thought that I might be able to locate them through other records such as land and tax records. Although VA has some great records on GenWeb, I have had trouble finding many of my ancestors on birth, marriage, death, and land records. Would greatly appreciate any help. Thanks, Sharon
You can order the land tax records on microfilm from Richmond. Crystal P wrote: > > Sharon, > Unfornately, there is not alot of Lee Co records on internet. Sharon, Unfornately, there is not alot of Lee Co records on internet. Most of Lee Co records are indexed in books. Most of these indexes (if not all) are located at the Lee Co Public Library in Pennington Gap. Most of these indexes were written by Elizabeth Carpenter. Elizabeth is usually in the library on a daily bases. You can call there and see if she is there. She will gladly talk to you and help. Genealogy is her passion. I suggest to anyone researching in Lee County to go the library and get the information from the indexes before hitting the courthouse. Because most of the older records at the court are not indexed. {I worked 7 years at the library}. As for Hancock Co. many records will never be found the court house burnt and many of the records were destoried. Here is a link for what is avaiable. http://www.tngenweb.org/hancock/ Hope this helps in your research. This is great information on the process for land received for a grant. Can anyone tell me if this was unique for VA? I believe my great grandfather received a land grant in KY. I can't find any record of his recording a deed. However, I believe, after his death, his wife may have sold it. There is not enough information on the sale for me to be sure if it was indeed his widow. Judy
There is no rule that says you have to record your land. Many times it is purchased and they pass it along for generations before someone in the family decides to sell the home place. So, you never know how many years it could be from the first entry to the next. Or, if they got a grant, you don't have to record that either unless you want. It only needs to be recorded when you plan to get rid of the property forever. You get it recorded then. If you don't have a good title, there is a problem. You can also check the land tax records as they tell who bought or sold property. phil smith wrote: > > Elisha Smith and family are listed in the 1850 census as having real estate > valued at $1,000 also in the 1850 agriculture census shows he has land 23 acres > improved 86 unimproved > Question.....I can't seem to find the transaction of him acquiring this > land........is there anyone out there that may give me advice on this issue? > phil > > > ==== VALEE Mailing List ==== > To unsubscribe from the list send your message to <[email protected]> > for individual list messages; <[email protected]> for digest messages. > Then put the word unsubscribe in the subject line and send your message. > > ============================== > Search the US Census Collection. Is anyone working on the Lewis SMITH line?...Lewis was a Constable in the Jonesville dist 1850s;60s;70s; born abt 1810 Scott or Washington Co. was married to Elizabeth and after her death married (6 April 1866) Catherine Fletcher phil
Phil, First look at wills. And look at his wife family. In those times the wife would not have been allowed to own the land. If her father had left it to her in his will; Elisha would have become the owner not his wife. Also, check to see if he got thourgh a marriage bond. Some bonds included land instead of money. I have seen a groom getting a couple of chickens and goats for the bond..lol. Hope that help some. Crystal Elisha Smith and family are listed in the 1850 census as having real estate valued at $1,000 also in the 1850 agriculture census shows he has land 23 acres improved 86 unimproved Question.....I can't seem to find the transaction of him acquiring this land........is there anyone out there that may give me advice on this issue? phil --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Hello All: I normally do not do this, so please bear with me. I have a personal committment to provide historical information and genealogy related information on the Internet at no cost. I am now openly soliciting ideas for additions to my Hills and Hollers website. It is located at: http://www.hillsandhollers.net If you have material related to the area and would like to see it posted on the Internet, I will do all the work, all you have to do is send the material. I can do most of the work via email with attachments etc. sent directly to me. If you so desire, you can use the USPS to send me copies of your material. You maintain the copyright and display rights to any information submitted. If you send something and later wish to have it removed, all you have to do is ask. I give full credit to those submitting information. My desire is to create a website that is both informative and "entertaining." I would like to expand the information about the coal mining camps and small farming towns in the area. I want to expand my information to include not only SWVA but Northeastern Tennesse and Southeastern Kentucky. I would also like to know of other websites that have similar themes. I am creating a links page to direct users to other individual's pages. Please feel free to provide me with ideas on how to improve the Hills and Hollers site. I am dedicated to helping everyone find the information they are seeking.
