    2. Teresia, What Yeary's are you researching? Virginia Yeary-Ferguson In a message dated 3/29/2005 12:45:11 P.M. Central Standard Time, [email protected] writes: I am new to this e-mail group, so I thought I would post a message of surnames that I am researching. SMITH, LOWE, BARKER, LEGG, YEARY, LEWIS. I am looking for information on my maternal Great Grandparents, Samuel SMITH/LOWE b: 1854 (family story is that he was born a LOWE and raised a SMITH), Rebecca Elizabeth BARKER/LEGG b: 1856 (my mother said that her maiden name is BARKER, but another family member said that her maiden name was LEGG). I am thinking that Rebecca may have married a LEGG and then married Samuel SMITH. I believe Rebecca is the daughter of Benjamin Wallace BARKER and These two moved to Harlan County, KY about 1880. Any info would be appreciated. Teresia Hamilton, VA "The best things in life are the people we love, the places we've been, and the memories we've made along the way." Virginia Yeary-Ferguson

    2. Wayne, There are still many elder folks living in Lee County and surrounding areas that worked in those mines. My father is 82 and he loves to tell the stories of the mines. He would probably tell a stranger the stories of accidents and such than to his family (as history goes .... a stranger can obtain more information than blood relative.) I would be willing to send you in a private email his name and address if you would like to pick his memory about stories and information. 2. Carter ........ I wish that you would have sent that information to me about six months ago. I did not do that, and a hacker obtained access to my computer and deleted EVERY bit of family history information that I had on emails and in "family tree folder". YES, to all on this list......IT CAN HAPPEN. Back up your emails that are valuable. 2. Charles Bondurant was a coal mine developer in Lee County. The town of St. Charles was named for him. If I remember correctly, the town was called Bondurantville before it was named St. Charles. Leona Mines was in Leona, VA above St. Charles. I think King Cole was in Bonnie Blue which was also above St. Charles. Virginia Iron and Coke Company (VIC as it was known to us) was above St. Charles. Never heard of Briar Ridge, must have been before my time. All these mines had coal mining camps with lots and lots of small houses clustered together. Not sure of all the above because my father left the mines when I was 3 years old. I do know some older Lee County natives that can help you and will forward your email. Here are a couple of links that has pictures of miners and mines, if you are interested. _http://www.geocities.com/baird5now/Miners.html_ (http://www.geocities.com/baird5now/Miners.html) _http://geocities.com/bairdstonecreek/Bonnyblue.html_ (http://geocities.com/bairdstonecreek/Bonnyblue.html)

    3. Wayne, perhaps you could call an elderly gentleman, Paul Bobrosky, who lives in Keokee (Lee Co) VA. Sorry, I do not have his phone #, but he is quite helpful to others. I think he has a collection of coal-mining artifacts. By the way, I can't help you with your mining questions, but "Leona" was a common mining name in the 40's & 50's. 2. Hi Sue!! (and whomever else is interested in Kessiah ) There is a book called Ball's of Fairfax Co.Va.done by Bonnie Ball who was VERY through in her research(she died a few years ago)and she discovered all that info. Now her son & his wife have done a book called Ball's of the Potomac that covers many several different lineages. You can verify this info thru them.Their book cost $ 79.00. Their website is:http://ballfamilyofthepotomac.com/_wsn/page4.html There are MANY Ball sites that have their wedding date.Where the came from and his line of descent but no one has her parents name but I have seen her birthyear.1724/5( I think !!) A Ball research mixed your Ball genealogy up connecting your clan to Elizabethj(Tunnell)& George Ball Sr.(b.1752)who was a nephew to your George Sr. Your FIRST known ancestor: Wm.Ball Lord of the Manor(in England)who was born in 1450. Here is the site:http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/p/r/i/James-A-Price/GENE5-0009.html I "set" it on John Ball(Generation 9) # 10 Born 1670. Then go to child iii:George b.1720 Then go to # 13 -George Ball m.Kessiah Ann Hanson Jim Price will add your compete lineage to this if you ask him.He is NOT into genealogy tho ! L.O.L.!!! ***************************************************************************** For Elizabeth Tunnell & the"other"George -GO thru John then child i: Moses Sr. then go to # 12 (Moses Sr.)there you will find George Sr.(b.1752)who m.Elizabeth Tunnell Enjoy !! P.S. Go back to Generation 8 and Click on # 9 and you will find Mary Ball, the mother of George Washington !! ************************************************************************** To All !! Your correct lineage WLL be in this new book called Ball's of the Potomac I mentioned above that was done by Bonnie Ball's son George Ball !!-----------------------------------------Sincerely yours,Wilma

    3. Hello All: One of my main interests is the influence the coal mining industry has had on the families of Lee and Wise counties. I am interested in trying to research the various coal companies and corporations that existed in the counties in the early to mid 1900s. I know that genealogy lists are not normally the place to look for these types of information, but I am really looking to see how mining influenced family life during the mining heydays. If you can relate how mining influenced family life, please feel free to contact me off-list. I would greatly appreciate any help. I have come across some mine names and locations that I am unfamiliar with. Perhaps someone on the lists can help. I would like to know about the Bondurant Coal and Coke Co in Boundurantville, VA (Lee County), Leona Mines, King Cole Mining Corp (Pennington Gap), and Briar Ridge Coal Corporation (St. Charles). In Wise County, I would like information on Blackwood Fuel Company (Blackwood), ANY Virginia Iron Coal and Coke Company mines, Little Tom Coal Co (Norton), Blue Diamond Coal Company (Tom's Creek), and Yellow Creek Coal and Coke Company (Wise). As a POST-SCRIPT (P.S.) My grandfather was a miner at Inman in Wise county, as was his brother. My grandfather was severely injured in a mining accident at the mine somewhere around 1936. He was left with a permanent limp resulting from one leg being slightly longer than the other after all the medical treatment for the mining accident injuries. I have no other details other than those. Does anybody have knowledge of any mining accidents that may have happened during that time period? I have searched most of the local newspapers for any reference and cannot locate any information. I'd love to solve this family mystery. Sincerely, Wayne Duncan

    3. Check with the nearest public library. If they don't subscribe to Heritage Quest, try the parishes around it. If they offer the service to cardholders, ask if you can get one, even though you don't live in the same parish. In many cases, libraries are cooperative with their neighbors. 3. Oh, Jim! Work is just something you put in time at so that you can get a paycheck & spend it all on county records and family histories! As forr the economy, if they started taxing genealogy sites on the net, we could probably give up property taxes altogether <G> Retirement? That's for field trips to cemeteries & courthouses! 1. thanks
    2. Thanks to all who made it such a good day for me; I got my request re the census of 1850 filled and even better I learned what the browse feature on Heritage Quest would do. I have free access to it through the Knox Tn. Library but thought it was limited to only those which were indexed. Thanks. Jim
