I am looking for information concerning JACKSON POWELL, b. 1838, & MARY POWELL, b. 1838, parents of: WILLIAM, b. 1866 FRANKLIN, b. 1868 NICHOLAS, b. 1873 MYRTLE, b. 1876 JESSEE, b. 1879 Would anyone know if this family would be connected to Powell Valley? Thanks very much. Loretta Myrter [email protected]

In her post to the KYHARLAN-L list dated 2 April 2005, Pat W. BALL has raised a very important issue about the name of the wife of George BALL, Sr., b. 1720 in Stafford County, VA, d. 1801 in Lee County, VA, son of John BALL and Winifred WILLIAMS. Her name has been shown as Keziah UNKNOWN, Keziah Ann HANSON, Keziah HANSON, and simply UNKNOWN. The book, "John Ball of Lee County, Virginia and His Descendants", by William Woodson Hoskins, 1975, p. 6, refers to George's wife as "wife killed by Indians" and does not show her name. In the new book, "The Ball Family of the Potomac: 1654-2004", by Doris LeClerc Ball and George L. Ball, 2004, p. 319, the authors state, "According to family tradition, the wife of George Ball was named Keziah. There is no documented evidence for this, but it follows enduring family oral tradition. Also, three of Keziah's children - Martha, John, and Moses - all named a daughter Keziah, and the name was used repeatedly by this branch of the family for at least the next 100 years." The authors also refer to the confusion with George BELL, who married Ann HANSON or HENSON 15 April 1745 in Overwharton Parish, Stafford County, VA. The Overwharton Parish register, 1720-1760, is online at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~vastaffo/parishregb.htm. As can be seen below, at least three children are shown in the register for George and Ann BELL, and two others may be theirs. These are NOT the children of George BALL.. Bell, George Married Ann Hanson, April 15, 1745 Bell, Mary Daughter of Ann, born January 7, 1746 Bell, Elizabeth Daughter of George and Ann, born January 31, 1748 Bell, Jonathan Son of George and Ann, born January 7, 1751 Bell, Elizabeth Was baptized October 26, 1755 Bell, George Son of George and Ann, baptized October 1, 1753 There is also an LDS ancestral file submission as seen below. This of course is an undocumented submission but adds to the evidence presented above. Husband's Name George BELL (AFN:1T64-ZWH) Born: Abt. 1725 Place: <, Stafford, Virginia> Married: 15 Apr 1745 Place: , Stafford, Virginia Wife's Name Ann HENSON (AFN:1T64-KFJ) Born: Abt 1729 Place: , Stafford, Virginia Married: 15 Apr 1745 Place: , Stafford, Virginia Father: Edmond HENSON (AFN:1T64-K8H) Mother: Elizabeth (AFN:1T64-K9P) Submission: AF97-105514 Thus, I think it is time for researchers of the George BALL line to cease using the incorrect information that George BALL, Sr. of Stafford County, VA, married Ann HANSON and cease using the combined name Keziah Ann HANSON/HENSON for George's wife. Forthwith, my file will show her only as Keziah, whose maiden surname is unknown. I welcome any valid evidence to the contrary. Thank you for the replies on Rebecca Willis. Supposedly Rebecca was born in Lee Co in May of 1867. Does anyone have birth records for that year who could see if there was a Rebecca Roberts born then? With the help of others, I have pretty much put together things except that I still cannot confirm if she was a Roberts or not. I know that she cannot be a full sister of my gr gr grandmother, Mary Jane Roberts Lawson because her father died in 1864 in the Civil War. I am leaning toward the possiblity that she might have been an illegitimate child of Louizana Roberts, Mary Jane's mother, possibly raised by someone else in the family - or maybe she was a niece to Mary Jane - she did have an older brother - however, this still would not explain why she was said to be my gr grandfather's aunt on the 1945 delayed birth certificate. I would appreciate if anyone could look it up for me. Thank you Sharon Flora

I am trying to solve a mystery in my family and hope someone will see this that might be able to help. My gr grandfather, Isaac Lawson was born in 1880 in Kyles Ford, Hancock, TN and raised in Blackwater, VA. His mother was Mary Jane Roberts and father was Joseph Lawson. Isaac's birth was not registered until 1945 when he reached retirement age - his original was probably lost in a fire that destroyed records. One of the witnesses listed on his birth registration was REBECCA ROBERTS BLESSING - listed as his aunt - and said to be present at his birth. She was 78 years old at that time, making her year of birth abt 1867. Now, here comes the mystery - I have not been able to find any record of her being Mary Jane's sister. Mary Jane's father, Abraham Roberts was killed in 1864 in Blackwater Civil War battle. I traced Rebecca back from her marriage to Joseph Blessing - first appeared on 1920 Wise Co, VA census as his wife. She had previously been married to William Kilgore - mar! ried on Oct. 1, 1901. On their marriage certificate Rebecca's parents were listed as Samuel and Jane Willis. The marriage certificate lists her name as Rebecca Willis, but lists her as a WIDOW. Says she was born in Lee Co, VA. William is listed as SINGLE, age 44, occupation coal drawer - PARENTS John and Susanna Kilgore. Another odd fact is that Rebecca is listed on the 1900 Wise Co, Census in William Kilgore's household as Rebecca Willis, and as cook in the relationship column, b. May, 1867. She is listed as divorced, but under her name there are two children listed as boarders with Willis last name - ?Larsah?,F, b. Sept, 1887, and ?Quillen,M, b. Apr 1891. The writing is hard to read in some areas on this report. There are three children listed under William as his children -yet he was listed as single on their marriage certifcate - not widowed. William died before 1910. William and Rebecca had a daughter, Susie Kilgore. On the 1910, Releigh, West VA census Rebecca is list! ed along with the children that were on the 1900 census, except, ?Lars ah?, all listed as her children. By 1920, she is back in Wise Co and married to Joseph Blessing. I did not find a marriage record for her to Joseph in Wise Co. Susie was living with Rebecca and Joseph Blessing in 1910, listed as step-daughter. Susie married S.J. Leonard on 06/17/1923 in Wise Co, VA - parents listed as W. A. Kilgore and Rebecca Blessing. Stella Kilgore, listed on the 1900 Census as William's daughter, married R. D. Mumpower on 12/13/1912 - no father is listed for her and her mother is listed as Rebecca Kilgore. Was she, in fact, the mother of the other children listed as William's children in the 1900 Census? Was Willis her last name from a first marriage or was she born as Willis? Were Samuel and Jane Willis in fact her parents? Why was her maiden name listed as Roberts on my gr grandfather's birth certificate? Did Mary Jane's mother possbily have an illegitimate child after her husband, Abraham, died in the war - did one of the Willis family members raise t! he child and she took their name?? These are possibilities - I would appreciate any help that anyone might be able to give me with this mystery. By the way, Mary Jane Roberts married Joseph Lawson in 1871, so Rebecca would have only been about 4 yrs old then and when my gr grandfather was born she would have been only 13. Thank you for any help, Sharon
I believe relationship listed on the census forms refers to head of household. when my great-grandfather listed my grandfather in the house hold after his 2nd marriage, all the children were listed as sons and daughters even though the first 3 were by his first marriage (the great-grandmother died and he remarried and had children by his 2nd wife). this could be quite misleading to future generations because they would think the 2nd wife was mother to all the children. Hi Lee, Thanks very much for your reply! I have previously found this family and was able to trace the child you found [James M. Minter, age 9] in the 1880 census from Henry county, VA.....and unfortunately this was not the same person. There are also other matches in the 1880 census in nearby Hancock county, Tennessee and in Texas. Does anyone know if births were recorded by the county at this time? Hi group, I'm hoping that someone may have knowledge about this person or could perhaps point me in a direction where I could find more information?? All that I basically know is that James M. Minter was born 27 June, 1871 at Jonesville, Lee county, Virginia. According to census reports from 1900-1930 his father is said to have been born at Kentucky OR Virginia and his mother's birthplace was Virginia. His death certificate only says that his Mother's maiden name was Morgan. His obituary says nothing about his parents and none of his descendants know who his parents were. I suspect that his middle initial stood for Morgan, but it's just a guess. His son was named Roy Morgan Minter. Any help is much appreciated! Ivan Nichols -- No virus found in this outgoing message.
