That is an interesting tidbit of information you have passed on about marriage licenses. I had never heard that before. I know that very often you find a license issued and it shows "no return". I never was sure whether the preacher just didn't get to the court house with his record, or what happened. There are several early marriages listed under licenses in Blount Co TN that all say "no return. In those cases I have the theory that these couples had been married by a minister some time previously, but then when the county was formed and started their records some of these people took out a license thinking that they then had it legally recorded. In some cases there were children who appeared to be older than the date the license was issued. Listers, I don't know how many of you know this fact, but in the 1800's & early 1900's the woman was not required to be present when a marriage liscense was issued. The parents listed for her cannot be relied upon because the man may not have known who they were or if she had a step-mother or two or three. In other words any man could go in and order a marriage liscense if he thought the lady would be willing to marry him. Sometimes you will see where a liscense was issued but not completed.
If you don't mind me jumping in........the marriages that I have seen on my family that have "no return" on them was when they did not follow through with the marriage after posting bond, so after time had elapsed they had to re post bond....at least that what happened with them. phil ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marian Dunlap" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, April 27, 2005 12:03 PM Subject: Re: [VALEE] REBECCA WILLIS > That is an interesting tidbit of information you have passed on about > marriage licenses. Norma, Could you tell me if there are any Pennington's or Yeary's mentioned in this scrapbook? The scrapbook has a lot of articles plus many loose clippings that have to be scanned one at a time. I am in the process of scanning all the articles, putting the loose ones in a new scrapbook and indexing both. This will take some time...most likely months. I not only work full-time but I also have many other commitments. When all of the above is done, the scrapbook will donated to the Pennington Gap library. None of my family are in the scrapbook so I have no interest in keeping it but would like to have it available to help other people. In the meantime, I will gladly do look-ups for anyone and send a scan by email. Norma

It looks like my first email query didn`t get posted I was asking if anyone has heard anything more about the Pennington gap scrap book that had a lot of info. about WW!! Vets, Pow`s and MIA`s My uncle, Philip David engle is mentioned therein and I would love to have axopy of the articleIt was supposed to be donated to the Library. sorry for the email errors. sue Engle in Al.
I meant to say "scrap book from someone from Pennington Gap Sue
Recently there was a notice that a scrapbook had turned up in Connecticut (?) or some other state I`m not sure where, which contained a lot of newspaper clippings about WWII soldiers, POW`s MIA`s etc/ the book was given to someone in Pennington Gap withthe understanding that it would be "whared" and put in the Library. I wonder if anyone knows if the present owner has "shared" any of the info. yet. My uncle is mentioned and I would very much lke to have the stories. Thanks Sue Engle in Al.
Sharon, I'm not researching Maggard, but in my Davis/Harris line I spot some in marriages. My grandmother, Birdie Jane Davis-Harris has a sister, Aunt Bessie (Nancy Bessie Davis & her husband, Clarence Edward Hodges who's daughter, Gladys Geniva Hodges, mar, Paul David Maggard (b) abt. 1911 (they all lived in Lee Co earlier, but I believe they moved to Harlan Co., KY). You may look there for more Maggard, as they had a son also named David Maggard. Also another Davis kin of Lee Co., VA (1st cousin of my dad, Vivian Harris), Elsie Mae Davis & husband, William Clendenon (b) abt. 1911, who's dau. Shirley Ann Clendenon (mar) Earl Ray Maggard, & had a son Davis Earl Maggard. I don't research them, but that's what I had, in my files.
