    1. [VALDRES-L] Connecting relatives
    2. Hi Betty, Haven"t seen you since the centennial in Fagernes. We really wanted to go to Decorah this year but for sure will be at the one in my town, Sioux Falls, next year. Recently I have run into a couple of Hoyme/Oyhus relatives that say they received information from you recently. One of these I had shown my info to that you had done, but the other was a chance meeting with a grandson of my ggrandfather by his second wife. I had been looking for this fellow and his sister, Judy Amos. The thought occurred to me that others that I would like to know of may also contact you for the same info, and I would never know about them. Do you ever consider connecting relatives inquiring of the same ancestors that may appreciate being advised of other living relatives with interest in the same genealogy? I think you are in a unique position to connect related people and can think of nothing ethical or legal that would preclude you from doing this. What are your thoughts on this? I still haven't found anything on my ggrandmother, Anna Amundson, who married Ole Kristianson Oyhus abt 1869 in Fillmore County, MN and moved to Minnehaha Co. SD by 1872. I found Ole on records of the Adams Lutheran Church in Argyle WI and think they might have met or even been married there before moving to Fillmore Co. I found where she died in 1885, and Ole remarried. Anna is buried in an unnamed and unmarked cemetery in SD. This is our big brick wall. Any ideas on where to look? MVH Denny Griffith

    3. Hei Denny, For sure we'll meet in Sioux Falls. Plans are already underway on the stevne there. I know you'll have a great time. I bring along all our genealogy resources, so you can explore them all. We will have two photocopy machines, so bring lots of dimes, plus COPIES of your data. So often material is left in the genealogy room, belonging to "someone", and I don't know who. As for connecting relatives, yes, it would be a great idea. But I have boxes of copies of charts I have done, and there isn't any way I can think of to connect people, unless it's just plain memory on my part (a chancey situation). I do remember a few years back, doing a chart for a woman in Iowa. The next project was for a man in Michigan. As I was compiling the ancestors, I realized I had just DONE these lines, so wrote to both. They were overjoyed, as each knew there must be descendents of a missing ancestor, but didn't know where to look. The man from Michigan took his vacation and attended a family reunion in Iowa. It was wonderful to hear about it. At a stevne a while back, while I was greeting members from the stage, I mentioned that we really should all look quite a bit alike. I asked each to look at their neighbor - then asked how many descended from the "king line" in Valdres. An amazing amount of people raised their hands! But this went back many generations. Wish there was a "magic" way of finding your Anna Amundson. You wrote you found records at the Adams church on Ole. Did it mention Ole's wife? Sometimes the early church records wrote where the person was from in Norway. You can "nail" them down a bit by looking at US census films, available through your local library - ask your librarian - they come from the National Archives. Another thought - most towns have a historical society. Just by chance, something may be in one of these. Again, ask your librarian about a historical society in a town where they may have lived. Do you have an obituary for Anna? The Rowberg Files are at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN. A man names Rowberg spent a lifetime collection Scandinavian obits. These are also being added to. The service to get a copy of an obit is free, but I always stick in $1 for copying, etc., plus send a stamped self- addressed envelope for their reply. Address: St. Olaf College NAHA Ole Rolvaag Library Northfield, MN 55057 You can send a query to the "Viking" magazine for their Lost Branches column. I don't have the address at hand, but you can find it in a "Viking", available through Sons Of Norway.
