Betty, I will join the Valdres Samband Lag. So you think maybe Torsten Haughovd is Torsten Nilson? I wonder why I have that other name. Or is Haughovd the name of the farm he was from? I have only been doing genealogy for a year. And I do not know Norwegian, just English and some German and French. It is wonderful to have someone experienced help me with this. I will mail my membership fee to Diane Lerohl before Friday. Are cashier's checks alright? Is there a form to fill out that I should send her? Thank you, Lauren Nelson >From: Betty Rockswold <bettylou@spacestar.net> >Reply-To: VALDRES-L@rootsweb.com >To: VALDRES-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: Re: [VALDRES-L] New member >Date: Mon, 09 Jul 2001 08:38:36 -0500 > >Hei again, Lauren, > >From the microfilm of the church records for East (Østre) Slidre, I find >Torsten Nilson born 5-13-1854 (not 1855), son of Nils Olson Rudi and Gro >Guttormsdtr. Hei Lauren, Welcome to the Valdres Samband Lag! We hope it will be a long and interesting experience, and that you will learn much about Valdres and your Valdres ancestors. A cashier's check will be fine. I should ask your snail mail address, so I can mail the results of the search to you. Hope you live in the US, as the fee for joining is $15 a year if the address is Canada. There is a form on our website you can print out www.valdressamband.org or I can send you a printed membership form. Or just the check and indication that you want to join, but the secretary will need your snail mail address to send you the current issue of the "Budstikken", our publication. Yes Haughovd is the farm name, essential in finding ancestors in Norway. Everyone had three names, at least. The first was their own; the second was their father's first name with "son" or "datter" added; the third was their farm name - their "address". If they moved to another farm, their "address" changed. The Norwegians had a naming pattern: the first son was named for the father's father; the second son for the mother's father; the first daughter for the father's mother; the second daughter for the mother's mother. After that, they might start "working on" the great grandparents. If a child died, the next child born of the same sex might get the same name as the dead child. If the wife died and the man remarried, the first female child would be named for the dead wife. The same if the husband died. This wasn't always followed closely, but it's a good indication in discoverin the right family. Med beste hilsen (with best wishes), Betty P.S. My complete address is at the bottom of this message (someplace - it's getting long!) "L NSonata@" wrote: > > Betty, > I will join the Valdres Samband Lag.
