Hello, I am new to Norwegian genealogy. My great-great grandfather was born Torsten Haughovd, in Valdres Norway in 1855. He later came to America and was naturalized as Thomas Nelson in Ladysmith, WI. Is Valdres considered a state, county, or a town? Thanks, L. Hei L. Nelson! I perhaps just answered this, as a footnote to another query. Please tell me more about Torsten - do you know his father's first name? I'm assuming it was Nels. Do you know the month and day Torsten was born in 1855? There is a Haughovd farm in East Slidre, a part of Valdres. Valdres is an area in Oppland "County". Valdres is split into six parts: Vang, East and West Slidre, North and South Aurdal and Etnedal. It's main town is Fagernes. Valdres is north of Oslo about 70 English miles, and east of Bergen, on the map. I'd love to hear from you. I'm the genealogist for the Valdres Samband Lag.
