    2. Hello Betty, Yes, I am the other query about Torsten. You are so kind to reply. I have but only a small amount of information: Torsten Haughovd born May 13, 1855 in Valdres, Norway. Naturalized in the U. S. as Thomas Nelson Sept. 20, 1910. His first son was born in the U. S. in 1876, so records probably exist from 1855 to 1875 or so. I don't know if his wife was born in Norway, her name was Mary Anderson, I do not have a birth date for her. I will list the children's names, maybe it will help find Torstens fathers name: Otto, Nettie, Anton, Nels, Emma, Johnny, William, Albert, Mabel, Alma, & Rhoda. The farm in East Slidre could it be the same family? Could you tell me what they grow in Valdres? Thank you again, Lauren Nelson >From: Betty Rockswold <bettylou@spacestar.net> >Reply-To: VALDRES-L@rootsweb.com >To: VALDRES-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: Re: [VALDRES-L] New member >Date: Sun, 08 Jul 2001 08:22:33 -0500 > >Hei L. 3. Hei again, Lauren, From the microfilm of the church records for East (Østre) Slidre, I find Torsten Nilson born 5-13-1854 (not 1855), son of Nils Olson Rudi and Gro Guttormsdtr. This couple also has Kari on 1-25-1850. The names you mention of Torsten's children are all American, except for Nils and Anton. Only 4% of land in Norway is tillable. East Slidre is a hilly area and the farms are very small by American standards. They could be not more than a few acres, but I don't know about Rudi. Most farms are high up on the hills, so are subject to frost. Farmers are subsidized by the government, as they want to keep small farms operating. There may be more back in time on Nils and Guro's lines. If you were a member of the Valdres Samband Lag, my help would be free (I'm the genealogist for the Lag); only charge would be for a chart I make out (just what I pay for them), photocopying for our files for future reference, and postage. Please visit our website at www.valdressamband.org to find out more of what we are about. Dues are $10 a year or $27 for three years, payable by check made out to the Valdres Samband Lag and sent to our secretary, Diane Lerohl at 13500 Pepperwood Circle, Minnetonka, MN 55305. We also put out our publication twice a year called "Budstikken", which in the Valdres dialect, means "message stick" - all about Valdres. We'd like to hear from you again! Med beste hilsen, Betty "L NSonata@" wrote: > > Hello Betty, > Yes, I am the other query about Torsten. > You are so kind to reply. > I have but only a small amount of information: > Torsten Haughovd born May 13, 1855 in Valdres, Norway. > Naturalized in the U.
