Betty, Martha, and anyone else interested! I've been thinking about this farm name since connecting with Martha (ancestors from the Lien farm in Vang), a few days ago. My skill at translating Norwegian is about as good as my talent for knitting Norwegian sweaters (zilch!) But I think this is the gist of Valdres Bygdebok B, page 407. Someone please correct me if I am wrong! It appears Søre Lien was one farm, until ca. 1800, when Endre Nilson Lien (whose own sons died young) split the land between his son-in-law, Jon Knutson Nefstad and his other son-in-law Ola Gudbrandson Nørsvin. But Jon Knutson did not use the farm afterall, since he was at his father's farm NEFSTAD in 1801. Endre Nilson Lien kept the other half until Ola Gudbrandson Nørsvin bought the second half, as well. Ola Gudbrandson was married to Sigrid Endresdotter Lien. It appears his children (?) went to Nørsvin, so he sold the Lien farm deed to his son-in-law, Knut Tomason Jøvne/Tørpe. The farm numbers I have related to the Lien farm in Vang are as follows: 79/1 - Nørre Lien 80/1 - Søre Lie or <<Uppi støgun>>. It appears Tomas Knutson Lien received the deed from his father, in 1832, 80/2 - Midtre Lie or <<Nie støgun>> It appears Ola Knutson Lien received the deed to this farm, probably the same year his half-brother took over Søre Lien. Tomas and Ola had the same father (Knut Tomason Jøvne el. Tørpe), but different mothers. Knut Tomason's 3rd son, Gullick went to America around 1850. This is your Gullick -right Martha? The book also states Søre Lien was formerly known as Septon. Now I'm wondering if all 3 Lien farms were under Septon at one time, or if only Søre Lien was once called Septon. I don't have the pages to the Nørre Lien or Midtre Lien farms from the bygdebok. Unfortunately, after all this typing, none of the above persons are my ancestors! My Gunder Nilson Ødegaard Lien (aka Gunnar Nilson, b.1793-d.1840) was a husmann at Søre Lien, living on the husmannsplassen: Øvre Haugen, Liahaugen, or ("eller") Haugenplassen. But I'm glad we brought this up, Martha, because now after concentrating on this, I think I've finally figured out this farm puzzle!
