    2. Back again. "Gardsnr. 12, skyld 16 mark 31 øyre." Farm number. 12, tax 16 mark 31 øyre. I have "mark" as "field", "maggot", or "old measurement" - is there monetary def? And cannot find "øyre" anywhere. "Namnet Austegarden kjem beint fram av at garden låg aust for ein annan gard." The name Austegarden come beint forward from that the farm lay east for another farm. "Høgda o.h. på det gamle hovudbølet var ca. 480 m." Height o.h. at the old the main dwelling place was about 480 m. Does this refer to sea level? What does the "o.h." stand for (assuming "m." is meters)? Thanks again...:) Star O

    3. Hello I will try to help you out a bit. Remember that Norwegian does not contain as many words as English. Hence among others the word MARK can have different meaning dependent upon use and content. Here MARK is monetary. MARK was the unit at some time in history....... like dollar. I cannot tell you right from my head when it changed to Spesidaler and to KRONE that is used today. ØRE is 1/100 of the monetary unit. The farm was in dept due to the contract (or lease) of the estate/land - 12 mark and 31 øre. The farm named Austegarden was positioned east of and other farm end hereby got its name. Probably to the east of the main farm. Høgda o.h...... your guess is right. This means METERS above sealevel. Hovudbølet ......... is the main part of the buildings that belongs to a farm. In case there are several "subfarms " on the estate HOVEDBØLET or HOVUDBØLET is the biggest and the major part ... where the owner lives. (Where they live and where they have the cattle.)
