There are several Sather/Ster farms in the Valdres Kommune. So more information is needed about your Ole Olsen Sather from North Dakota. Do you know when he was born? Any siblings you are aware of? I believe you wrote his parents were Ole and Auggie. Auggie may be the nickname for "Augusta", a name that appears in several areas of Valdres in the 1865 census. If you provide more detailed information about your Sathers, I think you'll find members of this List can more helpful! Vickie

There was an Otto Sather in Hills, Minnesota. I don't know his origin, but he could have been from Valdres. He passed away about 30 or 40 years ago. All my great grand parents except my maternal were from Valdres, except when I was growing up I/we never thought of such things. Otto's son has also passed away and he had one daughter who still lives in the area on a farm. I think her married name is Nelson. Perry Lien
Hei, There are a couple of farms by this name - very small parts of a larger farm. Do you have any kind of a date for Ole - his birthday or birth year? Dear List: This information may be very vague, but it's all I have regarding my Valdres background. My gg grandfather was Ole Sather. On his 1893 North Dakota marriage certificate, it shows his parents as Ole and Augie Sather. It states the place of residence at the time was Valdres. Augie must be americanized for some Norwegian name. I realize that since Ole's fathers name was Ole, he would be Ole Olson . I also realize that Sather was americanized for the farm Saetre/Saethre. Are there any farms in the Valdres area? That's all I know of Ole and Augie (?). Where would I go from here on research? Death records maybe? Help! Candace
Thanks again for the help. Finding a Olena (Oline) in the census was big. The birth date of 1872 could be it. My Olena's death record says 1874, but I had 1872 before that. Her brother, Ole, isn't there; instead there is Mons Monssen. A sister Berthe is there. Could be her. Thanks, Jerry
Hei, I don't remember if I replied to this query or not. I'm the genealogist for the Valdres Samband Lag. We only have records for Valdres, so perhaps we have records for Ole Rudlang, if there is more information on him. What was his father's name? What year was he born? Would be happy to help, if I can. Jerry, Hedemarken would not be in Valdres. In Hedmark that I know of there is a farm in Åsnes named Melby and one in Grue. My ancestors came from the one in Grue but came to America in the 1860's. I have a branch of Melbys with a few Oles in it. (Seems to be a big farm in Norway-lots of families) My ancestors came to US in 1880's also. First stop was in or near Lyon Co. MN and then they moved on to Wells Co. ND. Where did your Ole Melby live in the US?
