Hei Jennie, I'm the genealogist for the Valdres Samband Lag. The Thon farm (many diffferent spellings) is in N. Aurdal and also in Etnedal in Valdres - plus many other places in Norway. The name Ole was the most common in the Scandinavian countries. Do you have a birthdate for your Ole? Is there any other name he went by, example: "Ole Jonson Thon" Did he marry in Norway and bring a wife and children along to America? The use of English by either an older or younger Norwegian would be very unusual. Do you know that he may have lived in England for a couple of years? My only personal knowledge is from my ancestors that were from Ål. God dag. Greetings to all, I want to thank each and every one of you for your kind thoughts and prayers for my father in law. I wanted to try and send a personal note to each one of you but due to the enormous volume of emails I received, it would take much too long. My father in law is out of intensive care and doing fantastic! His turn around is almost unbelievable. I told him that he had many people of Norwegian ancestry praying for him and that, combined with his Norwegian stubborness, is what pulled him through!! Thanks again to everyone, Tom Woollweever
Does anyone have any information on how common it was for a Norwegian born in the 1830s to speak English? It is told that my GGgrandfather, born 1833 in Sør-Aurdal, spoke English when he immigrated in 1852. Thanks, Clarine "Skipp" Andresen
I have an Ingeborg Tobiason, b. 10 Jul 1847 Norway, daughter of Lars Tobiason. I am trying to identify her parents and have located the following who are buried in the Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah: Lars Tobiason, b. 30 Oct 1811 Vestre Sildre Valders, Norway and died in Decorah IA 2 Sep 1892 and wife, Jobend L Tobiason, born Olson in Vungi Valdres, Norway in 1813 and died in Decorah IA 2 Aug 1881. I do not know if my Ingeborg Tobiason is daughter of Lars and Jobend (Olson) Tobiason, and wonder if anyone could check for this family to see if they had daughter named Ingeborg born 1847. Records that I have indicated that Ingeborg Tobiason came to USA which her parents when she was about eight years of age (ca. 1855). She married my relative, Edward Erickson, a Civil War veteran. Regards, Norman Hjelmeland
Hello, If you have requested lookups in my County History Books, there is going to be a delay before I can get to them. My father-in law is in Intensive Care in the hospital and things are not looking very good. I WILL get to all of the requests, I just can't give you how much time it will take before I can get to them. Thank you all for your patience, Tom Woollweever
God bless you at this difficult time. I hope everything works out well. A reader Hilton Head Island

I am experiencing some confusion regarding positively identifying the mother of my ancestor Anders Olsen: 1) According to The Valdris Book Andreas Olson, the son of Ole Iversen Gravlibraaten from Aadalen and Ingrid Andersdatter Delet from Begnedalen, was married to Ragnild Gulbrandsdatter Skytteland . 2) According to Sør-Aurdal by Gjermundsen the father of Andreas Olsen was Ole Iversen Haugsrud born circa. 1793 died 1855 on Ruste and his mother was Guri Gudmundsdatter 1790-1859. They were married in 1813. This book also tells that Anders Olsen Dale married Ragnhild Gulbrandsdatter Skyttland born 1825 , the daughter of Gudbrand Gudbrandsen Skyttland from Sør-Sørum (1787-1873) and Guri Gudbrandsdatter from Haugsrudeie (1792-1878). Andreas and Ragnhild were maried on January 1, 1849 and lived on nørdre Fenøya and later at søre Fenøya. 3) According to old membership records of Valdris Samband, Andreas Olsen was born Jan. 22, 1822 at Sorumseie, Begnadalen, the son of Ole Gravlibraaten from Ness, Aadalen and Ingrid Andersdatter Delet from Begnadalen. Ingrid was the daughter of Anders Delet. (Another problem-where is this Delet?) 4) According to another publication (either The Valdris Book or Valdres Samband 1899-1974) the parents of Anders are named as Ole Iversen Gravbraaten and Marit. I would appreciate any help or leads in trying to sort this all out, Garth in Saskatchewan.
I have a Sam SAMSON married into my family, but know nothing about him. His wife was Marit "Mary" Hande (b. 1870) and they lived in Coleville, WA. However, Mary's twin brother, Knud N. My Sampson line was in the Riceland Twp., Freeborn Co., MN area around 1870 - ? and were originally from Norway. The spelling of SAMPSON may be a corruption of SEMSON, SEMSEN, SAMSON, etc. Anyone researching in this line? Anna Marie SAMPSON b 1868 MN - is a 2yr old dau in the home of Sans (b1833 Norway) and Britta (b1849 Norway) Sampson in the 1870 Riceland Twp, Freeborn Co., MN census. Anna Marie married Gilbert FODNESS 08 Jan 1890 in Blue Earth, MN. Think it's Blue Earth, Faribault Co. rather than Blue Earth County but don't know for sure yet. Gilbert was born in Nord Aurdahl, Valdres, Norway c1854 and emigrated with his parents and some siblings in 1855. Am thinking that Sam Sampson (first name may have also been Sen or Sans) may have been from Valdres as there is a Sem Sempson living in Decorah in 1860, which is where my Fodness line (Knud Halvorsen Riste Fodnes) was in 1860, also. The death certificate that I have for Anna Marie says her father was Sam SAMPSON and her mother was Johanna NASHEIM. This is the only reference to a Johanna NASHEIM that I have heard of. Oral family history says Anna was born in 1870, her death cert says 1871 yet there is a 2yr old Anna in the 1870 census. Anna Marie may have had the following siblings: Andrew A. b 18 Feb 1871 to Sam and Betsey SAMPSON, Freeborn Co., MN Anna Sophia b 28 March 1873 d 28 Mar 1873 Freeborn Co., MN born to Sam and Betsey SAMPSON Freeborn Co., MN. Parents born Norway, farmer. Sophia b 11 June 1874 born to Sam and Betsey SAMPSON, Freeborn Co., MN Tine Randine b 7 June 1877 born to Sam and Britta SAMPSON, Freeborn Co., MN Thank you in advance for any suggestions, hints or help, Cheryl Cummings
Hi Sandra, I am a member of the Valdres Samband and I read your note - what a puzzle! Have you found a death records for Ole and Augie (assuming they died in North Dakota) - I have found that if you know the death date, you may be able to find a newspaper for the area and look at the obituary (if there was one) and sometimes they tell place of birth and other information....or perhaps an obituary for your gg grandfather, Ole would tell when he came to the US and who may have stayed in Norway. Hope this helps - Glen
