These records are in the parish books, on microfilm. Also in bygdeboker. No plans to put them online. Hi all, My DAHLUM and EVERSON families lived near Volga, Brookings Co., SD. Does anyone know where I could find a list of Norwegian Lutheran congregations in Brookings Co. from say 1880-1945, and where the church records would be now? I'd like to borrow them on microfilm if possible. Thanks. Robert E. Wilder-Jones <robert@silvana.org>
Well there are some for Vestre Slidre on Digitalarkivet: http://www.hist.uib.no/arkivverket/ Norodd Bergene, of this list, has a large number of names on his site. Recently I traeked and found a common ancestor on Norodd's list with person I know here in Calgary who had the same farm name in his tree. I have a new found cousin due to Norodd's list: http://members.xoom.com/norodd/ You have to scroll town to "surnames". If you would tell me who you are looking for in Lunde, Kjerstein, and Eltun I may be able to help you by using the bygdebok. I would like to hear from fellow lister Martha Hicks as I don't have her email address. I have ancestors who lived on many of the same farms asher ancestors in Vang. Garth Ulrich
Try this web site for information. It's the archives page for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. I think they will let you borrow microfiche from their archives. http://www.elca.org/os/archives/intro.html Vickie in Minnesota ----- You wrote: My DAHLUM and EVERSON families lived near Volga, Brookings Co., SD. Below are 2 web sites that might be helpful to you. If you can't find who you are looking for: try various spellings of the names or places; or try the patronymic name (ie: Iverson, Hallvardson, Olsdatter/Olsdotter/Olsdtr, etc) rather than the farm name (or vice versa). You may need to use your imagination when it comes to the spelling of names or places!! 1. Vang, Valdres burials from 1730-1808: http://www.hist.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?earkivverket/vangvbgr 2. Migrants from Valdres1816 to 1867: (not necessarily emigrants, just those people leaving their parish and going elsewhere) Again, try different spellings if you can't find your people: http://www.hist.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?earkivverket/valdutfl Good Luck! Vickie in Minnesota ~I have many ancestors from the Vang area farms! Lien (Gunderson/Gunnarson), Kasa, Nystuen, Kongslien, Bunde, Lille Jevne/Jøvne (later called Ødegaarden) and many more! ------- In a message dated 3/11/00 2:38:25 PM, mjhicks1@juno.com writes: << Hi! In going through my files tonight I found a photocopy of this original document that I thought might interest others with Valdres roots. I am transcribing it as best I can, so hope you will excuse any errors I make in interpreting the handwriting. "Blik pas Anne T. Høverstads livets Historie "Anne T. Holden (Høverstad) var fød Nov 26 1820. Hun voxede op i [enige?] omstændigheder. [Inscriptions on Anne and Even's tombstones in West Norway Lake Lutheran cemetery, near Sunburg, Minn., read as follows: ANNE HOLLEN, Født 20 Nov. 1820, Døde 13 Oct. 1915; EVEN H. HOLLEN, Født Nov. 1809, Død 12 April 1896. Some discrepancies with the manuscript are therefore apparent. Even and Anne's son Tosten E. I have had the following newspaper obituary sitting in my files for a few years now. Never wanted to toss it out in case it might interest someone with Valdres genealogy, but today the day of reckoning came to clean up my "den" (so called, very appropriately). The obituary is from the Saskatoon (Saskatchewan) STAR-PHOENIX, 12 June 1996, page C4. I don't seem to be able to find any reference to her or her parents in the most recent Valdres bygdeboker. I would like to hear from anyone who knows of Ragna's roots in Norway, as I have a connection to one Johnsrud family in my Hande family tree. HAIGHT - Ragna, age 89 of Lutheran Sunset Home, Saskatoon, passed away June 7,1996. Our mother was born Ragna Johnsrud on December 2, 1906 In Ron, Valdres, Norway. She came to Canada on May 4, 1929 to be a bridesmaid. The next year, she married the bestman, Trygve Sira on March 18,1930 and they farmed south of Hanley. Years later, they moved into Hanley. Trygve passed away December 1, 1971. Mom married Floyd Haight on November 29, 1980. Floyd passed away on September 26, 1992. In January, 1993, she moved into Luther Tower and then into Lutheran Sunset Home in December 1994 after suffering a stroke, She is survived by a daughter, Thelma (Chic Csigi) Adolph of Saskatoon, and a son, Elmer (Marilyn) Sira of Hanley. Also step-children, Lloyd Haight, Alan (Violet) Haight, Jim Haight of Saskatoon, Glen (Rose) Haight of Hanley, Lucille (Jerry) Ermel of Cupar, SK and Floyd's brothers and sister. Also grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a brother, Gustav (Henny) Johnsrud; two sisters, Klara Holte and Marie Garlid, all in Norway; plus nieces and nephews, also in Norway. She was predeceased by her parents, Nils and Thurid Johnsrud; and her brother, Oskar Johnsrud of Norway and her husbands, Trygve Sira and Floyd Haight. Mom was always a hard worker on the form. After moving into Hanley, she was instrumental in getting Meals on Wheels and New Horizons (Seniors' Club) started in Hanley. She also took up oil painting at 70 years of age. Anyone wishing to make a donation, may do so to the Hanley Lutheran Church, Hanley, SK. The Funeral will be held at the Hanley Lutheran Church on June 12 at 2:00 p.m. Pastor K. Finnestad officiating. HANSON FUNERAL HOME of Davidson Is In charge of funeral arrangements. D'Arcy Hande Saskatoon, Sask, Canada

This tale was 1st brought to my attention in 1960's when my mother's relative, Haldor Skrutvold told her to tell my aunt (my father's sister) that she had an uncle still alive in Norway. My aunt soon flew to Norway and met Knute Larson, my grandmother's brother. Knute told my aunt that she had a half-sister still living also. It seems that my grandmother, Marit Larsdatter, born 28 April, 1872 to Lars Gullikson and Marit Knudsdatter Veahaugen; gave birth to a daughter, though she wasn't married. This daughter lived with her grandparents Lars and Marit, while my grandmother moved to Nes, Hedmarken where she met my grandfather, Hagbart Nelson, married, immigrated to the US and raised 7 children. No one knew about this other daughter until 1968. My Aunt Lilly met her half-sister Karoline the following year. My uncles who were still alive would not acknowledge this fact. Now, all from that generation have died, except my last uncle who is 87 years old. He accepts this sister he never knew and her family in Norway and wishes that his mother had been more open and sharing about her past. This is my mystery family and I hope someone can help me find them! Info that I have: LDS microfilmed Skrautval Parish records (307311; births, page 12 entry 5 1894): Karoline b. 7 May 1894 Father: Kristian Olson of Kampen (?); Mother: Marit Larsdatter of Aabolseie. Ugft (I assume means unmarried) 1900 census also lists Karoline Kristansdtr living with Lars Gullikson and Marit Knutsdatter 1 copy of a letter written by cousin named Guri Bergli of Ron, Valdres from Dec. 1974 to my Aunt Lilly's family after Lilly died. Guri wrote that Karoline died 12 Dec 1974; my Aunt Lilly had died in Nov of 1974. Since everyone had died, Guri wrote a few more details about Karoline. Karoline was a very happy girl with her grandparents; she married a man named Olaus Brager and had 5 children; 2 girls and 3 boys. Olaus died in 1953. Guri also mentioned that Lilly and Karoline looked a lot alike. Should this be of any help, the writer of the letter, Guri, mentions that she is the daughter of Knute Larson mentioned above. He died in 1971 at the age of 96. Karoline was my half-aunt and I am sorry I never got to know her. I hope that all or at least some of her 5 children are still alive. They are my half-cousins, and it would be nice to get to know this family! I hope someone out there may know them Thanks! Elaine Homan
