    1. [VALDRES-L] Bear Creek Lutheran Cemetery
    2. I have just today received the original book listing burials in the Bear Creek Lutheran cemetery located just north of Grand Meadow, MN. I have been allowed to borrow it for a short time to do the transcription of the cemetery. If you have ancestors who may be buried here, please feel free to contact me and I will see if I can find any info in the book. After I finish the transcription (which will be sent to the US GenWeb Tombstone Transcription Project) I'll let you know if you wish further info. (Remember I only have this book for a short time). 3. Pia, I suggest looking for the daughter that died about the time that the son, Knut, was born. One of my hardest efforts to find ancestors in the 1801 census was a daughter that was born in 1896 and the mother died a short time later. The baby and her oldest brother went to live with her parents in another parish. The father kept the two middle children, remarried and had two more children by the 1801 census. As you can imagine I had trouble matching up the families, but using the county wide census, I found the names and ages of the children that fit. I then went back and found the mother's death and the father's remarriage. Good Luck, Owen -----Original Message----- From: Pia Fjelltun [mailto:sirenek@online.no] Sent: Monday, April 03, 2000 10:15 PM . I am looking for the parents of Knut Olsen Kjørlie, married to Ingeborg Olsdatter. At the age of 10 he is living with his grandparents (1801 census) on Kjørlie He is describet as "their daughters son." His grandparents from mothers side are Anders Olsen Kjørlie and Ragnhild Thoresdatter. Which daughter of Anders and Ragnhild are the parents of Knut? I expect her to be married to a Ole ....... On the fantastic side of Norudd Bergene I found 3 possibilities, but as Anne was married to somebody else, it might be one of the to mentioned daughters there, Sønnev or Mali. Is it common that a 10 year old is living at his grandparents? Hope somebody know this line.

    1. [VALDRES-L] Qviem and Tvedt Farms
    2. Hi I am trying to research Christopher Tostensen born ca 1825 in Vang, Valdres. He died 25 March 1861 in Vang. He married Berith Ostensdatter Tvedt. They were both on the Tvedt farm when their bands were posted in April 1854. I think I found their family on the Qvien Farm. He died 25 March 1861 and I think Berith probably returned to the Tvedt farm with her children. They emigrated to Houston County in America on 5 April 1862. Their children were my ggm Ingeborg Christophersdatter, born 16 October 1853; Tosen Christophersen, born 31 Maqy 1856; Osten Christophersen, born 26 Nov 1859 and Christopher Christophersen, born 8 Sept 1861. I have not had any luck finding their parents in America or my ggm Ingebor's brothers. I am not sure if they just lived on these farms or were from these farms. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    3. While visiting in Park River, North Dakota, last summer, I browsed through the local history book for that area. Several emigrants from Valdres settled there. I transcribed the life stories of a few of them from the book. If anyone is interested, I will send them transcripts: a.. Knut K. Lykken, b. 18 Dec 1858 in Liberty Township, Manitowoc Co., Wisconsin, and his wife Trina Sophie Erickson, born at Valders, Manitowoc Co., on 14 Dec. 1867. b.. Ole Skattebo (no birth or death year), who emigrated initially from Norway to Estherville, Iowa, and then settled in Walsh Co., North Dakota. c.. Peder Aafedt, b. 26 Apr 1845 in Sogn, Norway, and his wife Gertrude Skatteboe, born in Valdres, 1851. Gertrude was a sister of Ole Skattebo mentioned above. There is also mention of a brother Knudt Skatteboe in this article. D'Arcy Hande

He was born on 30 Sep 1887 in Valdres, Oystre (sorry, but I do not know how to change this into diacritic symbols) Slidre, Oppland, Norway. He died in Glasgow, Montana, USA on 3 Nov 1956. He was hit by a train. mother Guri Nilsdatter Trandokken. She was born in 1863 and died about 1942 in Snortheim, Vestre Slidre, Oppland, Norway. She was married to Mikkel Gudbrandsson Snortheim. He was born in 1854 in Snortheim and died in 1936. She was the daughter of Nils Olsonn Jorstad and Guro Knutsdatter Trandokken. Guri also had three other children who were named Sigrid Mikkelsdatter, Gudbrand Mikkelson, and Nels Mikkelson. father Knut Kolstad. I know nothing of him. This is the first real inquiry that I have made of the Valdres Mailing List and I hope that I have done it correctly. Thank You very much, David Vaughan

    3. Hei Pia, The "Vestre Slidre" bygdebok by Geir Beitrusten, page 167 says the underfarm of Søre Skjel, named 21/2 Hølludn had a Gullik Knutsen Helle on it in 1820 as a husmann. On looking at Vol. A, page 82 of the Østre Slidre bygebok by Geir Beitrusten, we find widow Berit Knutsdotter who had married Knut Gulliksen Skjel. But Knut drowned in 1846, at barely 27 years old. They had two sons, Knut and Ole. The eldest Ole Knutsen Beito took over the place around 1870. On looking at Vang, Vol. C, page 359, there is a Knut Gullikson Helle born 1820. But this Knud cannot be the one, as he came with his parents to America. I'm descended from Knut's sister Gjartrud born 1817. This doesn't help you much, but just thought I'd pass it along I'm the genealogist for the Valdres Samband Lag in America, so if there is anything else I can help you with, let me know. 2. Ingunn Johansen
    3. Hello I will try to help you out a bit. Remember that Norwegian does not contain as many words as English. Hence among others the word MARK can have different meaning dependent upon use and content. Here MARK is monetary. MARK was the unit at some time in history....... like dollar. I cannot tell you right from my head when it changed to Spesidaler and to KRONE that is used today. ØRE is 1/100 of the monetary unit. The farm was in dept due to the contract (or lease) of the estate/land - 12 mark and 31 øre. The farm named Austegarden was positioned east of and other farm end hereby got its name. Probably to the east of the main farm. Høgda o.h...... your guess is right. This means METERS above sealevel. Hovudbølet ......... is the main part of the buildings that belongs to a farm. In case there are several "subfarms " on the estate HOVEDBØLET or HOVUDBØLET is the biggest and the major part ... where the owner lives. (Where they live and where they have the cattle.)
