thanks, betty yes I have this but appreciate your email. I was afraid this was too early. Im now reading vang and v.s. books for ivars and jons to try to detect parents but this early, the books often dont list children very thoroughly either. I have two more questions - where is "bolstad?" possible farm name of eivind ivarson koljordets first wife. could not find marriage record of he and either of his two wives in the v.s. marriage records book Also, where is nevstad? this name is another possibility for an antecedent of anfin's thanks elizabeth >Hei Elizabeth, > >I'm afraid we're dealing with too early a time frame. Betty, Would you possibly have any clues on anfin jonson or his wife berit ivarsdatter, parents of ivar anfinson koljordet? I found both anfin and berit in the vestre slidre death records during our samband last summer but have been unable to find the parents of either one of these two. are they too early to be in church records? one died in l746 and one in 1748, so they were born in the fifteenth century. Since anfin is an uncommon name, ive searched a few other places. Darcy hande was not actually a descendent, and so far havent found anyone else on the list that is searching for these folks. Wish I could lay hands on some of those lists again with first names that were at samband but perhaps these two were born too early to have birth records?? any tips you could provide would be helpful. hate to wait until next summer's stevme to pursue these elusive ancestors. p.s. both berit and anfin went by the farm name of ulen, one of the cotter's places on the prestefjeld i vestre slidre. liz blair
Very interesting. At brother, perhaps nephew. My anfin died about the same time as engebret was born. Perhaps son of jon anfinson ulen? See Steine in V.S. book. Let's keep in touch. Hello, I was wondering if someone could help me translate a letter if you have time? I have a letter that was sent to my great grandmother from her half sister shortly before the sister died. My great grandmother, Ingeborg Olsdatter Fauske/Kleiven was from Nord Aurdal and I believe her sister (Sigrid) was too. Later they lived in Vestre Slidre. I have been told from a cousin from Trondheim that the Valdres dialect is hard to translate and even harder when it's in old Norwegian. I believe this letter has both. The letter is 5 pages long but there are only 10 lines on each page. I have it scanned and I can email it to anyone who can translate it. If they don't want to download it I can post it on my web page if that's preferred. Whichever way is easier. Thank you for any and all help, Paula FAUSKE, KLEIVEN, Kleven, SNORTHEIMSOEN, OYLOE. http://members.aol.com/pjmarsolek/index.htm

Somebody asked some days ago if somebody come from the Skogstad farm. I was on holiday in the netherlands and answered (tried) my mail online. I have no idea if the answer made it to the list. So if it is old news, just delete. My father in law come from Skogstad in Østre Slidre. He was the eldest son of Margit Fjelltun who still lives at Skogstad. Her second son Herman took over the farm as her eldest son married a girl who was odels girl on a farm herself. Please, What did you want to know about this farm? regards, Pia
Hello, Norway & Denmark ( Norway was own by Denmark at that time) change from Juian to Gregorian in 1700. The last Julian date was 18. February 1700 and the next day when they changed to Gregorian calendar was 1. March 1700. So it seems that we lost a couple ofdays, but the Julain calendar at that time had many errors. Sweden changed in 1753 in a more complicated way that I may describe later. A bit off track but our list does have its quiet moments. The Julian calendar was introduced by Julius Caesar in 45 BC. It was in common use until the 1500s, when countries started changing to the Gregorian calendar. However, some countries (for example, Greece and Russia) used it into this century, and the Orthodox church in Russia still uses it, as do some other Orthodox churches. The Gregorian calendar was proposed by Aloysius Lilius, a physician from Naples, and adopted by Pope Gregory XIII in accordance with instructions from the Council of Trent (1545-1563) to correct for errors in the older Julian Calendar. It was decreed by Pope Gregory XIII in a papal bull on 24 February 1582. The papal bull of February 1582 decreed that 10 days should be dropped from October 1582 so that 15 October should follow immediately after 4 October, and from then on the reformed calendar should be used. This was observed in Italy, Poland, Portugal, and Spain. Other Catholic countries followed shortly after, but Protestant countries were reluctant to change, and the Greek orthodox countries didn't change until the start of this century. Denmark (including Norway): 18 Feb 1700 was followed by 1 Mar 1700 Finland: Then part of Sweden. 17 Feb 1753 was followed by 1 Mar 1753 Note, however, that Finland later became part of Russia, which then still used the Julian calendar. The Gregorian calendar remained official in Finland, but some use of the Julian calendar was made. Sweden decided to make a gradual change from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar. By dropping every leap year from 1700 through 1740 the eleven superfluous days would be omitted and from 1 Mar 1740 they would be in sync with the Gregorian calendar. In the meantime they would be in sync with nobody. So 1700 which should have been a leap year in the Julian calendar was not a leap year in Sweden. However, by mistake 1704 and 1708 became leap years. This left Sweden out of synchronisation with both the Julian and the Gregorian world, so they decided to go back to the Julian calendar. In order to do this, they inserted an extra day in 1712, making that year a double leap year! So in 1712, February had 30 days in Sweden. Later, in 1753, Sweden changed to the Gregorian calendar by dropping 11 days like everyone else. 17 Feb 1753 was followed by 1 Mar 1753 Uff Da Michael Andrews Hopkins, Minnesota << Subj: [VALDRES-L] calendar change Date: 10/18/2000 7:34:33 PM Central Daylight Time From: kestrels@alaska.net (Andrea & Oliver Backlund) Reply-to: kestrels@alaska.net To: VALDRES-L@rootsweb.com Can someone tell me when the Scandinavian countries changed from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar? Hi AE, Everytime you send a message to this group -- you get a copy because you are a member also. I suspect that the first message "scribe" was supposed to read "unsubscribe" .
. The individual was already subscribed to the list and sent the list an email subscribe so everyone got it. I think they realized the error now. This has happened before when a list is quiet for a while and someone will think they were unsubscribed some how. Now if we had some traffic about Valdres then no one would think that.
