    3. Hei Betty, I have found Nærbø to be in Stavanger Amt.as a Farm Name, Sogn, and Herred. I have a copy of Matilda's death certificate and the information was what she had been "telling" people. Her maiden name was listed as Van Dusen, which I am almost positive was something she dreamed up. Her marriage certificate lists Abram and Sarah Tostensen. Do you know what "Haa Prgj." at the end of each census entry for the family stands for? It was after their birth year. Thanks again for all your help, Peggy > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------ > > Subject: Re: [VALDRES-L] Tostensen in Nærbø 1865 Census > Date: Thu, 08 Feb 2001 08:40:17 -0600 > From: Betty Rockswold <bettylou@spacestar.net> > To: VALDRES-L@rootsweb.com > > Hei Peggy, > > You didn't mention an area in Norway, so I can't judge. 3. Hei Peggy, You didn't mention an area in Norway, so I can't judge. Sarah could be a name changed from a bunch of Norwegian women's names, including Sigrid/Sigri/Siri/Sidsel/Sissel/Synøv, etc. I looked through several different indexes we have, hoping to find the name Abraham Tostenson, because people usually emigrated to people from their home area in Norway. No luck. The name Abraham is unusual in Valdres. Have you sent for Matilda's death certificate? Often it gives the names (first names at least) of parents. Just a clue. Lykke til (good luck), Betty Peggy wrote: > > I just found this information in the 1865 Norwegian Census. 1. [VALDRES-L] Tostensen in Nærbø 1865 Census
    2. Peggy
    3. I just found this information in the 1865 Norwegian Census. My Great Grandmother used the name Matilda Tostensen on her marriage certificate in Kenosha and said she was raised in La Crosse. She gave her birth as 1859, but it would not surprise me if she wrote that "in error"! She said her mothers name was Sarah, but isn't Serine another name for Sarah? If this is the correct Abram & Sarah Tostensen family, I wonder if they might have adopted her in Norway or in Wisconsin, OR she is one of the children listed below and changed her name to Matilda....sigh. Family lore is that her parents died and she was raised by the Kniskerns. I am beginning to think that maybe the Kniskerns died and she was raised by the Tostensens. Another question, is this area in Valdres? If not, where should I look? In the next census this entire family disappears, so I think that it was after they emigrated. (Betty, you tried to help me with Matilda about a year ago and I still appreciate all your efforts) Any suggestions greatfully appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!! 3. Hi list, I just subscribed to this list, as I´ve found out my Hordaland born distant ancestor did go to Valdres. Jon Jonsson (Berget, Kinsarvik) b 1784 'kom på rek og vart omstreifar, heldt seg i 1804 i Valdres samman med Odd Jåstad som tiggar og tjuv, skriv presten i Lærdal', so Jon went to Valdres, became a beggar and thief in company with a Odd Jåstad according to the priest in Kinsarvik. I wonder, are there someone with information regarding this who could assist me to find out some more? Much obliged, Ann Viking Saetre

    3. Hei Ann, I'm the genealogist for the Valdres Samband Lag. I tried to look up your Jon Jonsson in our various records (we have lots of them) but couldn't find him - also tried the marriage records. No Jon. As for further back in time on your ancestors (his birth in 1804) have you tried the Nordhardland/Sunnhordland Lag? For the north group, the genealogist is Leroy Madson at mlmadson@fargocity.com, and for the south group, she's Iona Loken at irloken@ndak.net Lykke til, Betty Ann Viking Saetre wrote: > > Hi list, > > I just subscribed to this list, as I´ve found out my Hordaland born distant ancestor did go to Valdres. > > Much obliged, > Ann Viking Saetre > > ==== VALDRES Mailing List ==== > VALDRES SAMBAND web page at http://www.valdressamband.org > Future Stevne's > June 22-24, 2000 - Kelly Inn - St. Cloud, MN > June 14-16, 2001 - Decorah, IA > June 20-22, 2002 - Oaks Hotel - Sioux Falls, SD -- Betty Rockswold 1522 N. She, with her sisters, will be putting some information together about the Odegaard and Holdahl connection. I'll be waiting for her to get back to me. 2. Dear Rod, Thank-you very much. I would love to talk with you and your aunt on line or via the phone. I have been researching the Holdahls for about a year after Bob Holdahl gave some things to my husband's brother. I am finding that the Skrutvolds, Gladheims, and Holdahl families had strong ties both in Norway and here. We are descendants of Soren (Sam or S.T.) from Roseau. I have met a few distant cousins on line, and know the spouses of all of the thirteen Holdahl siblings who were married. I am finding it hard to locate descendants from the Holdahls in Roseau, namely, Anna Mattson, Olaf, Ole, and Torbjorn Holdahl. Is Bendix Skrutvold who bought the store from Lars in 1914 your ancestor? I think they may have been cousins. Did Lawrence or Oliver have children? Is anybody left in Roseau from these early pioneers? These are all questions right now. I am glad to have the cemetery information. I would assume that is where Soren and Clara are buried. I am looking forward to hearing from you again, and sharing information. Shirley Holdahl

    3. I have some information. I am from Roseau, MN. The Ross, MN postoffice is now closed and people in that area are on the Roseau mail route. Lars and Lawrence are buried at the Concordia Lutheran cemetery in Roseau. Lars had a general store in Ross, and (it seems) became quite prosperous, but spoiled his two sons. My aunt, whose maiden name is Skrutvold, is related to the Holdahls and thus a cousin of Oliver and Lawrence. She is going to do some checking about this, specifically with a Bob Holdahl who lives in Minneapolis. I would be happy to put you in touch with her if you would like. Does anyone on this list have a suggestion how she might e-mail a sixth-grade class (teacher/school) in the Fagernes area? Thank you. Tom Granum Athens, Georgia
