    3. Hi there! Being a Tidewater Virginian for all of my life, I can tell you that there is an abundance of African-Americans with the name of CARTER from Virginia. There are several suppositions about this and the main one being that some of the largest plantation owners in early American/Virginia history were (Caucasion) men named CARTER. Near Williamsburg VA there is a large plantation called Carter's Grove which, in its prime, encompassed thousands of acres and owned maybe a thousand slaves. Many of the African-American people who live in Tidewater Virginian are descended from the Carter's Grove slaves. Carter's Grove is now owned by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and has been completely restored and is open to the public to show what life on a plantation, for blacks and whites, was like in the 18th century. Presently, there is a Carter's Funeral Home in Newport News, Virginia which is owned by a very successful black man and entrepreneur named Mr. Robert R. Carter. His telephone number is 757-872-6696. He says that he is descended from the Carter's Grove slaves and I think that he would be willing to take time from his busy schedule to help you. Good luck and God bless YOU! Deane Ferguson Mills York County, VA PS. As for the MOOREs you mention, I do know that MOORE is an ancient York County name. Moores of both races are everywhere here in York County! > > HELLO! > I NEED HELP IN FINDING OUT ABOUT THE CARTER'S AND MOORE FAMILIES.
