It certainly can be expensive to travel, stay in a hotel, and pay a registration fee. However, the national conferences such as those hosted by the National Genealogical Society (NGS) and the Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS) typically make audio recordings of the lecture sessions and sell them. Even some state level and larger local conferences make recordings. The recordings are made available on audiocassettes and are available for a reasonable fee. If you cannot attend a conference, study the brochure to determine if there are sessions you would like to have attended.
