    1. [VAISLEOF-L] Archives & Season's Greetings!!
    2. Jeannie
    3. I hope you have all been enjoying the Holidays and that each of you will have a wonderful new year. I've been absent from my duties with the Archives pages for a while and I just wanted to let you all know that I have not forgotten about them. I worked on them as hard as I could the first part of November, knowing that might be the last chance I'd get in a while, and it turned out to be true. So now my plan is to do my best to see to it that I get things caught up as soon as possible. During my trip back home over the Thanksgiving Holidays, I was able to visit some graveyards, and so have some new files to upload of my own as well. That's always exciting! My apologies to you all for the delay; as always your patience is highly appreciated. Thanks so much! Jeannie PS. For those of you who've written to me regarding my books, give me a bit more time to get back to you on those. Thank you so much for your interest and just as soon as I can get these archives straigtened out, I will be happy to answer all of your questions to the best of my ability. Thanks again, J Happy Holidays from the Watts' Family: Jeannie, Richard, Samantha, Jennifer and all our critters!!! ************* Now Available: "The Descendants of John Thomas Clay, Jamestown Immigrant and son of Sir John Clay of Wales" Also available: "The Descendants of James Bailey & Lucy Simms" For more info: http://www.trellis.net/users/madamx

    1. [VAISLEOF-L] MY VISIT TO ISLE OF WIGHT
    2. Many, many thanks to all of you who sent me directions and tips before I left...especially to Hope, anamarie, Ruth, Gail, and Elaine! It was a wonderful trip...the wather was nice and everything was so pretty there. We stopped first at the Isle of Wight Circuit Court Clerk's office and pulled wills and deeds for about two hours...I got 16 documents. Hooray! Then we went into Smithfield... and enjoyed all the Victorian houses. Then we had a delightful lunch at Smithfield Station overlooking the Pagan River. We walked the main street of Smithfield looking into the shops, visited the museum...very interesting, and stopped at the Tourist info office...they suggested that we go on up to Surry and take the ferry right to Jamestown, but this was not an overnight trip. We wished we had planned that however. Then we went to Saint Luke's Church (1632)...super, super. But no cemetery records. One of the stained glass windows was in memory of Joseph Norsworthy and his son Nathaniel Norsworthy. One of my Hodges forebears married a Norsworthy...a somwhat distant connection I'm sure. Anyway it was a really good tour. We live in Virginia Beach. We have lived in this general area for 45 years. And this was our first visit to Isle of Wight. It was great! And from a genealogy standpoint, a big, big success. There were two documents I could not find and I suspect that they are in Richmond. Thank you again for alerting me about things to look for and to do. It's great to have your support. Joan

    1. [VAISLEOF-L] Vist to Isle of Wight
    2. Hi, Tomorrow my husband and I are going to Isle of Wight, Curcuit Clerk's Office, to copy some wills and deeds. I've never been before and I'm really excited. Is there a library with a history room? or somewhere I might look at references I don't have access to? Where is the best place to get a good county map? Chamber of Commerce? Also in looking at the will and deed abstracts, I see Upper Parish, Lower Parish, etc. How many parishes were there in the early 1700s? We want to go on to Smithfield. Someone told me there is a nice place to eat near the water...a bed and breakfast or something? Does anyone know the name of it? Any advice would be appreciated. I don't want to get back and discover I've missed something I really should have done or seen. Help! We leave in the morning. Joan

    3. Posted on: IsleofWight County Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Va/IsleofWight/644 Surname: PIERCE, SIMS, LIGHTFOOT, GOODRICH ------------------------- I haven't achieved any new breakthroughs on Jeremiah Pierce of Isle of Wight County. I just can't seem to find a link to any other Pierce groups. But, this isn't too surprising, especially if Jeremiah's father died intestate. Jeremiah did have two slaves, Violet and Toby, if I am not mistaken, at his death. One or both could have been an inheritance, but if so, this was by a will, because only the eldest son would have inherited slaves if the father had no will. I suppose I shouldn't give up. How do you connect to John Sims of Brunswick Co., VA? His children by Honor Pierce Lightfoot (his second wife) seem to have moved to Georgia and one to North Carolina (the daughter.) E-mail me directly if you like--lcates@northstate.net. That way, we won't have to go out of our way to communicate. Two of the Sims sons married into the Wingfield family (Frederick and John) and these were very prestigious matches. The other was a very prosperous merchant in Augusta, GA.
