By chance, I had a uncle by the name of James Samuel White b 1913 born in Alabama. Right now I have only my line of White's and fill in when someone writes me on a connection. In searching the area of Isle of Wight I have found at least two different sets of John White's there. One was a sea captain and the other worked in tobacco. Thompson who lived in Shelby County, Tn. His mother was a White. He has since moved to Los Angeles, Ca. and I have lost touch with him. The following is quoted from his e mail to me: "My Whites seem to go back to a John White, b. circa 1660, who migrated from ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY, VA to what eventually became Bertie County, N.C. on 10-18-1701." "This is according to 'New World Immigrants' by Tepper." " I am citing a work entitled 'The Lee & White famlies of Bertie, Chowan, Hertford & Periquimans counties, N.C. 1660-1983 by a Joseph Britton Lee." "The NC Gen Soc advises that Mr. Lee compiled this work, furnished a copy to them and simply vanished." "I cannot find him."

I have a big stack of notes and am too busy to go through my notes, right now, but will do it as soon as I can. I don't remember what the documentaion was, or if there was definite documentation. I'll try to look it up in the next few days.
Please let me know anything helpful about the Isle of Wight Genealogy research. I am new at this and this is my first trip. I will have limited time and need to do what is most profitable. What are the hours of the Courthouses and libraries and where are they located? Are cemeteries easy to access? Is there reasonable lodging? What towns are best if all you know is that they came to Isle of Wight from Wales. Do any Herrings still reside there? Thanks for your answers. Betty Rhodes

All I have on John White, the father of Mordecai White of BERTIE COUNTY, N.C., is that he was born in Isle of Wight County, Va. about 1660. John White moved to BERTIE COUNTY about 1700 or a little before. I can't find anything else about him.
