Re the Askew family moving to NC: I know virtually nothing about the Askews, other than that Sarah Askew married William Powell in Isle of Wight County on 7 March 1833. When did the move to NC take place? Do you have any suggestions on how/where to research the Askews further? (I will be visiting Isle of Wight County in September.) Ken Grace

Greetings, My apologies for posting a general inquiry. I have a Charles Bartholomew b. ca. 1733 who shows up in Granville County North Carolina from parts unknown about 1754. The only clue to his origin is that his son John Bartholomew married an unknown lady in Isle of Wight, Virginia in November 1781. Help appreciated. Regards, Paul Buckley
I am looking for information on the Askew and White families that moved to Bertie County, N.C.
Hello Listers: Perhaps you can help me locate some descendants of my Watkins relatives who resided int he Isle of Wight in late 1792. They are: Sally Watkins who married John Eley afround 1792 Jack, Jim, Nat and Richard were taxables in the Isle of Wight in 1880. Richard was head of a Richmond, VA household in 1810. My Watkins ancestors also lived in other counties in VA, i.e., Northumberland, Goochland, Surry; some of them migrated to NC and lived in the counties of Gates, Caswell, Guilford, Greenville, Halifax, Brunswick, Warren. If you are a descendant of Watkins, or if you know any Watkins, please contact me. Thanks! Jalil

Posted on: Isle of Wight County Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Va/IsleofWight/10831 Surname: Eley ------------------------- I'm looking for tidbits of info on the Eley family, which was prominent in Isle of Wight County in the 1700 and 1800s. In particular, I am seeking info on Robert L(emuel?) Eley, who was born b/w 1800-1810 and died in 1844. His death resulted in his two children by his first wife (Sally Darden, I THINK) becoming orphans (as per the guardian accounts of 1845). These children are Lemuel Eley and my ggg grandmother, Cavanda "Kitty" Ann Eley (b. b/w 1828-1832). Following Robert's death, Robert's second (?) wife, Martha Ann Holland (I THINK) married James M. Eley on Jan. 31, 1848. Cavanda Eley, along with Exum L. Eley, witnessed the marriage. What I need is Robert L(emuel?) Eley's parents and their lines if anyone knows them. In my research, I found a Lamuel/Lemuel Eley, who I believe is the son of Mills Eley. Could this be Robert L. Eley's father?? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Cheryl Long
Copied from EMAZING - http://www.emazing.com/ Genealogical Society Newsletters Don't overlook the newsletters, periodicals and journals published by genealogical societies in your research. Societies often conduct important research and print their findings and data in their publications. Since their funding is often limited, the information they compile is not always published and made available commercially. Transcriptions of local records, canvasses of cemeteries and the inscriptions there, copies of diaries and journals, and a wide variety of other data are found in these excellent publications. Most often, too, each issue of journals and magazines are indexed with at least surname, and sometimes with locations. Check with libraries in the area in which a society is located to locate these publications, and with the society itself. Back issues are frequently available for sale, and sometimes society members will do look-ups for you. - George G. Morgan Shalori
Copied from EMAZING EMAZING - http://www.emazing.com/ Genealogy Conference Lecture Tapes You may not be able to attend the genealogical conferences you would like. It certainly can be expensive to travel, stay in a hotel, and pay a registration fee. However, the national conferences such as those hosted by the National Genealogical Society (NGS) and the Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS) typically make audio recordings of the lecture sessions and sell them. Even some state level and larger local conferences make recordings. The recordings are made available on audiocassettes and are available for a reasonable fee. If you cannot attend a conference, study the brochure to determine if there are sessions you would like to have attended. Contact the organization immediately following their conference to order tapes for yourself. - George G. Morgan Shalori
I am a WATKINS descendant. Would like to connect with the descendants of Robert 1737; Jeane/Jane 1739; MIchael 1741 and Catherine 1743. These children were listed in the inventory of the Northumberland County, VA estate of John Coppedge. Their descendants who lived in the Isle of Wight are: Beck - a Free Negro (FN), head of an Isle of Wight County household of two. He was a slave in 1810; Richard, FN in Isle of Wight in 1800. Headed a household in Richmond City in 1810; Ned, FN, and a taxable in Isle of Wight in 1800; Nat, FN, and a taxable in Isle of Wight in 1800; Jim, FN, and a taxable in Isle of Wight in 1800; and Jack, FN, taxable, in Isle of Wight in 1800; Sally, married John Eley, on November 24, 1792. My Watkins descendants may identify themselves as being of African ancestry, European ancestry, Indian (Cherokee) or a combination of all three. So, if there are WATKINS on the list, or if you know of WATKINS who may be connected, please contact me. Jalil
WebBrain.com - A New Way to Search The second Beta version of a relatively new Web search facility called WebBrain is available at http://www.webbrain.com . The top half of your browser window will display a list of categories and as you move your mouse across it, a web of connector lines appear. You can click and browse through the categories, or you can enter a search word or phrase in the search box. Entering the term 'genealogy' changed the top window to a collection of links to all kinds of sub-categories, and the links are displayed on the lower half of the screen. The site contains many common genealogy links, as well as some very unique items not usually found using the popular search engines. One such link, for example, was a bibliography of the Jewish town of Felshtin in Ukraine and other books, articles, archives, and websites about Ukrainian Jewish history, located at http://www.west.net/~jazz/felshtin/biblio.html . WebBrain is another new Web site that you will find useful in your genealogy and in other research. - George G. Morgan Pass This on! And Enjoy! Shalori
