    1. [VAISLEOF-L] Everett Gay
    2. Does anyone have any information on Everett Gay, who was in Orange County in the early 1800's with three children, Sally, Eliza A. and William E. Gay. He was living with William E. Gay in the 1850 Orange Co. census. I have heard that his father may have been named Thomas and came to Nansemond County around 1750. I have found Everett Gay in Isle of Wight at the same time that This Everett was in Orange. There may be a relation- ship, and I would like any information I can get.

    1. [VAISLEOF-L] John FULFORD, Headright (1693)
    2. John Fulford got land in the Norfolk/Isle of Wight area of what is now VA in 1693. No other information about this man seems to be in existence; however, in 1702, a John Fulford buys land in the Currituck/Dare Co. area of northeastern NC. Then, a John Fulford shows up in Bath County NC in 1706-1708. He has a wife named Dorothy (unknown) and at least two sons, John (jr.) and Joseph. IS ANYONE RESEARCHING THIS FAMILY LINE, OR DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY DATA ON THESE PEOPLE? This appears to be my direct patriarchal line, and I am very interesting in learning as much as possible about them. Can/Will you please help me if you can? Florence Fulford Moore

    1. [VAISLEOF-L] Re: Nancy Jane Carroll
    2. I am also researching the Carroll Line. I believe Nancy's parents were Doctor Gray M. Carroll and Winifred Jones. They had four children: Richard Emmett (my great-great-great grandfather), Algernon, Nancy and one other girl. I found info on Gray and Winifred at ancestry.com. Gray died in 1842. The 1850 census had Winifred, Nancy and Algernon living together (Richard was in Norfolk or Richmond), 1860 had Winifred, Algernon, and Richard living together. The ages of the childrenand wife in the 1840 census of Doctor Gray M. Carroll fit the ages of Winifred, Algernon and Richard. I've just found out most of this info. If you would like copies of the censuses and trade what info we both have, email me at tomaci@gte.net.

    3. Hmmmmm............. I had read that the name "Pagan" was actually a derivative of the word "pecan" for the pecan trees that grew in a grove by the little river that flows into the mighty James. I am not saying that your version is incorrect or that the version I have heard is correct. Just another version. Deane Ferguson Mills York County, Virginia Subject: [VAISLEOF-L] Re: Pagan Creek > > It is part of the lore here in Isle of Wight Co. that the river was named after the unconverted pagans (Indians) that lived along the shores. The name goes back to the 1630's. The original name of the river was the Warraskoyack River, which was the name of the Indians that lived in this part of Isle of Wight Co. But that name proved to be too hard to say or spell for the English. Maybe the difficulty that the English had in using the name Warraskoyack , along with the Indians failure to accept the Church of England as their faith, and the fact that the Warraskoyack not only participated in the Massacre of 1622, but also successfully drove the English out of Isle of Wight Co. for more than a year, all aided in giving this beautiful river its present name, "Pagan River" > > > > > ==== VAISLEOF Mailing List ==== > Genealogy - where you confuse the dead and irritate the living. >

    1. Re: [VAISLEOF-L] AFRICAN AMERICANS CARTER AND MOORE FAMILIES
    2. Deane
    3. Hi there! Being a Tidewater Virginian for all of my life, I can tell you that there is an abundance of African-Americans with the name of CARTER from Virginia. There are several suppositions about this and the main one being that some of the largest plantation owners in early American/Virginia history were (Caucasion) men named CARTER. Near Williamsburg VA there is a large plantation called Carter's Grove which, in its prime, encompassed thousands of acres and owned maybe a thousand slaves. Many of the African-American people who live in Tidewater Virginian are descended from the Carter's Grove slaves. Carter's Grove is now owned by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and has been completely restored and is open to the public to show what life on a plantation, for blacks and whites, was like in the 18th century. Presently, there is a Carter's Funeral Home in Newport News, Virginia which is owned by a very successful black man and entrepreneur named Mr. Robert R. Carter. His telephone number is 757-872-6696. He says that he is descended from the Carter's Grove slaves and I think that he would be willing to take time from his busy schedule to help you. Good luck and God bless YOU! Deane Ferguson Mills York County, VA PS. As for the MOOREs you mention, I do know that MOORE is an ancient York County name. 1. Re: [VAISLEOF-L] RE: Terminology
    2. Paul Drake
    3. "Son-in-law" quite usually meant exactly as it does now, however it occasionally - though very rarely - referred to a male young person who, by reason of a will or estate proceedings, an assumption of duties as a father by one who was not such, yet had assumed that duty as by marrying tyhe mother, or through the VERY, VERY rare adoption procedure that existed even then, was a "son as a matter of law" or a "son in the eyes of the law." If you seek the Robert Edwards who married Mary Hunt circa 1668, he had 3 daughters (as I recall) and a son, Robert, Jr., however all were under 12 at his death in very near 1680. ----- Original Message ----- From: "C.J.Walker" <cjwalker@alltel.net> To: <VAISLEOF-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, July 12, 2001 7:32 PM Subject: [VAISLEOF-L] RE: Terminology > I have a court record, from Isle of Wight Co, VA in the 1600s, which states that Luke Kent was the son-in-law of Robert Edwards. 3. I don't know if one exists or not, but if anyone on the list has a Benn's Church Registry, would you be willing to do a look-up for me? I am looking for a Luke Kent (wife Hannah), or Robert Kent. Robert was a headright to Justinian Cooper in 1639, and Luke and Hannah Kent sold their property in 1694. I had a wonderful genealogy vacation to IOW in June. The records at the courthouse and Smithfield library are excellent. Thanks in advance. Catherine Kent Walker

    1. [VAISLEOF-L] CROWLEY, WYATT
    2. HOWARD E. CROWLEY & ANN(IE) ELIZABETH (WYATT) CROWLEY, my paternal grandparents. Both born in ISLE OF WIGHT, VA. HOWARD born approx. 1872/died 31 March, 1942 in Kecoughtan Veteran's Hospital. ANNIE born approx 1878/died in April 1942 in NEWPORT NEWS. I know they are buried in Penisula Memorial Park in Newport News, but find no mention of them in the 1900 Census (on-line) in either Newport News or in ISLE OF WIGHT where all of their children were born HOWARD & ANNIE were married in 1900 in SURRY, VA. I was always told that Howard's middle name was LEROY, but "E" shows up as his middle initial on his death certificate and 'EDWARD' as a middle name of father on his son's (HOWARD LEON CROWLEY) original application for Soc. Sec. enrollment, so there is an error somewhere. I know one of HOWARD or ANNIE's sisters married a MAC COY?/MC COY. ANY HELP FROM COUSINS, ETC. I'M SURE ARE OUT THERE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECI-ATED.
