He was captured at Shiloh (I believe) and sent to Camp Ford, which was a Confederate POW camp where he died of disease and was buried. After the war, the Federal Government enacted a program to recover all Federal casualties and re-inter them in proper burial places. For this, a system of National Cemeteries was established. My g,g g'father was killed in the Battle of Pickets Mill in GA and buried in a mass grave at the battle site. About 2 years after the war, the mass grave was opened and the remains of the 770 Union troops were buried in the Marietta National Cemetery. And since it was 2 years after the battle, they were all buried in "Unknown Soldier" graves. Steve
