She was born in Wayne County on December 11, 1933 to the late Willie Pervis Vail and Margaret Scott Vail. She graduated from Pikeville High School in 1952 and had recently celebrated her 50th high school reunion. She retired from N.C. State Government as an Administrative Assistant with the Department of Administration. The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. W.C. Barham officiating. Burial will be in Zebulon Town Cemetery. She is survived by sisters, Ruth V. Williams and Marie V. Rowe, both of Pikeville, along with several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Paul Gay, on December 21, 1994; her sisters, Gladys V. Goff, Ella V. Rich and Winona V. BlankMartin A. Vail Sr. Nov. 12, 1921 Sept., 14, 2001 PIKEVILLE - Martin Allen Vail Sr., 79, died Friday at the home of his daughter in Lynchburg, Va. The funeral was conducted by the Rev. Paul Dunham and the Rev. Wayne Hicks at 11 a.m. today at St. Joseph United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery, Fremont. Vail was a former town commissioner and mayor of Pikeville. He served on BB&T Fremont board of directors for 33 years an was former owner of Farmers Hardware, Western Auto and True Value Hardware. Robert: You recommended that I contact Joan a few months ago concerning North Salem, NY genealogy. I just returned from 30 days in the north and I met with Joan and her husband Bob. They were truly wonderful people, and most helpful. We spent the day with them at the North Salem Historical Society facility and traveled in the local area. Just wanted to thank you again for putting me in touch with her. I purchased a copy of the "Burial Grounds of North Salem in Westchester county, N.Y" by B. Katz, 1970. It is a complete listing of June Cemetery (and some other listings of different cemeteries) and I noticed there are several Vail's buried there. Do you have this pub?
