I have pre-revolutionary free black ancestry originating there - Coy, Hickman, Mosby - all but Tim Mosby were free. He was a slave, born about1765, and his wife, Elizabeth Hickman, a free black, purchased his freedom on 7/2/1803. I also ran across another researcher who was researching a Smith Mosby, born about 1850 in VA. She was having trouble finding anything on the black Mosbys, too.
There are black Mosbys in Chesterfield County, Upper District prior to 1850. that then became Manchester District and the town of Manchester. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: 03 September 2002 09:40 Subject: [VAHENRIC] Re: Free Blacks of Henrico County -Smith, Mosby > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Surnames: MOSBY, SMITH > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/WBC.2ACI/1281.1285.1293.1 > > Message Board Post: > > You might try looking in Powhatan County.
