    1. [VAHENRIC] Sampson Gray & Samuel Gray
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Gray, Fields, Shelby Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/WBC.2ACI/304.312.490.1 Message Board Post: I am searching for both a Sampson Gray( b. 1785, NC) & a Samuel GRAY. I believe they are both brothers. Below is what I have found on them. I noticed you showed a Sampson P. GRAY & Samuel P. GRAY. My line goes down to a son named Noah GRAY (b.07 Oct 1811, NC). Noah's son is James P. GRAY. I Here's what I have on them: I am looking for the families of Sampson Gray, Samuel Gray, & William Gray, who are the only GRAYs listed in the 1830 Henry Co., AL Census. See, my Gray line goes back to Henry Co., GA. My ggg-grandparents are Noah GRAY (b. 07 Oct 1811, NC) & Mary FIELDS (b. abt 1815, poss GA). They married on 26 Aug 1830 in Henry Co., GA. There is a possibility that my Noah was married before to Louise CARPENTER abt 1829, Henry Co., GA but it appears Louise may have died in 1830. (I'm not sure about the info on Louise Carpenter) Noah Gray shows up in the following Census: 1840 Henry Co., GA Census- District #498, pg 314. 1850 Noah GRAY is in Russell Co., AL, pg. 68A, H.H. #1943 1860 Noah's widow Mary GRAY is listed in Russell Co., AL., pg. 883, H.H. #177 1880 Noah's widow: Mary Gray is listed in Lee Co.,(was part of Russell Co.),AL, Beat 7, pg 171A, H.H. #127,living with her son, Joseph B. GRAY. Noah GRAY & Mary FIELD's children are: 1. Bannetta b. abt 1834, Henry Co.,GA 2. George b. abt 1836, Henry Co.,GA 3. Thomas b. abt 1839, Henry Co., GA 4. Andrew Jackson b. abt 1841, Henry Co., Ga 5. Rachel b. abt 1845, Russell Co., AL 6. Mary Ann b. abt 1847, Russell Co., AL 7. John b. abt 1849, Russell Co., AL 8. James P. b. abt 1850, Russell Co., AL 9. Noah b. abt 1854, Russell Co., AL 10. Joseph B. b. 20 Dec 1857, Russell Co., AL My problem is trying to figure out who is Noah's father. In the 1830 Henry Co., GA census there are three Gray families listed. William Gray pg. 215 Sampson Gray pg. 209 Samuel Gray pg. 204 Note: James FIELDS is listed on pg. 206 (in between Samuel & Sampson GRAY) --------------------------------------- Of these three men, William is not one of the ones I'm looking into. pg. 215 William shows: Men Women 30-40 20-30 1 1 ...so William is not likely my Noah GRAY (b. 1811's) father. I do notice though that a FIELDS family is listed just two households away from William. ---------------------------------------- pg. 209 Sampson GRAY Sampson GRAY (b. 20 March,1785, NC) married Rachel SHELBY(b. 23 Sept 1785) between 1801-1811. He drew in the 1827 GA Land Lottery REPRINT of OFFICIAL REGISTER of LAND LOTTERY OF GEORGIA 1827 52d DAY'S DRAWING-May 5 HENRY. page 162 Fortunate Drawers: Sampson Gray, Captains District: Grays Number: 128 District: 20 County: Lee County Sampson GRAY shows up in the following Census: 1830 Henry Co., GA pg 209. 1840 Henry Co., GA - District #498, pg 315....just one page over from my Noah GRAY 1850 Henry Co., GA - Div. 42, pg. 233B, H.H. #661 1860 Henry Co., GA - pg. 920, H.H. #985 1830 Henry Co., GA Census: Male Females Under 5 5-10 15-20 20-30 40-50 5-10 10-15 40-50 2 1 2 1 1 1 2 1 My Noah GRAY (b. 1811) would fit here! 1840 Henry Co., GA Census: Male Females 5-10 15-20 50-60 15-20 20-30 40-50 2 1 1 1 1 1 1850 Henry Co., GA Census lists: Gray, S. 65 M Farmer $1,000 NC Gray, R. 65 F NC Gray, M.S. 30 F NC Gray, J.S. 28 M NC Gray, O. 25 F GA Gray, W.A. 20 M GA Posey, C. 16 F SC 1860 Henry Co., GA Census lists: Gray, Sampson 75 M Farmer $1,200 / $600 NC Gray, Rachel 75 F NC Gray, Margaret30 or 40? F NC Gray, Orphia 23 or 33? F GA Gray, Johnathan 38 M GA I also found on Volume 7 of Family Tree Maker someone had submitted: Sampson GRAY (b. 20 March,1785, NC) married Rachel Shelby(b. 23 Sept 1785) between 1801-1811. It showed only Merrill GRAY listed as a child of Sampson GRAY and Rachel Shelby. Merrill GRAY (b. 18 Aug, 1813, NC, d. abt 1851) married Minerva COOPER (b. 04 Apr 1816, d. either 04 Jan 1865 -15 Mar 1906) bet 1832-1837 in possibly Henry Co., GA. Merrill GRAY and Minerva Cooper show as having one daughter: Mary Amanda GRAY (b. 16 Aug 1837, d. 1933) It appears that Minerva Cooper GRAY is buried in the FIELDS Family Cemetery, Henry Co., GA, possibly near the town of Hampton. Because of Minerva being in the "Fields Family Cemetery" and my ggg-gnmother is Mary Fields who married Noah GRAY, I think there is a connection here. ------------------------------------------------------------ pg. 204 Samuel GRAY I don't have much on Samuel but from your message, it appears that you might info on this line. I hope you have on Sampson and William GRAY, also. Samuel GRAY 1830 Henry Co., GA Census: Male Females 5-10 15-20 40-50 Under 5 30-40 3 1 1 1 1 My Noah GRAY (b. 1811) would fit here, also! ------------------------------------------------------------ pg. 206 James FIELDS I suspect my MARY FIELDS (b. abt 1815, SC or NC) may be the daughter of the James FIELDS listed between Samuel (pg 204) & Sampson GRAY (pg 209)in the 1830 Henry Co., GA Census, on pg. 206. James FIELDS 1830 Henry Co., GA Census: Male Females Under 5 5-10 10-15 30-40 Under 5 5-10 10-15 20-30 2 1 1 1 1 2 1 1 My Mary FIELDS (b. abt 1815) would fit here! ---------------------------------------- Also I found a Thomas Gray (b. abt 1819, NC) & his wife Lenna? (b. abt 1818, GA) listed in 1850 Russell Co., AL Census, Beat #5, pg. 38A, H.H. 518, that was NOT listed in the Alabama Census Index Book, nor in the Ancestory.com index file for 1850. 1850 Russell Co., AL Census, Beat #5, pg 38A, H.H. #518 Thomas GRAY 31 Mechanic $300 NC Lenna 32 GA William 10 AL Caroline 8 AL Mary 6 AL Emiretta 4 AL Thomas 2 AL Alonzo 1 AL Sampson BROWN 23 Mechanic GA Do you have any info on this Thomas GRAY's Family? Please let me know if you have the names of the children for Samuel, Sampson & William GRAY. And if you know where I can get a copy or have someone look up for me the GRAY families listed in the book: "First Families of Henry County, Georgia" (Alpharetta, Ga.: W. H. Wolfe Associates), 1993, pp. 287-289.], Joseph Henry Hightower Moore, ed.. Thanks Ana Montero-Smith [email protected]
