Stuart was mortally wounded May 11, 1864. The Battle of Yellow Tavern was fought between Sheridan's calvary and the Confederates Calvary under Stuart. The famous opera star of that period, Jenny Lind, spent the night at Yellow Tavern when caught in a violent snowstorm while making an appearance in Richmond. An 1853 map of the county shows that a J. Hill was the proprietor at the tavern at this time.
