    3. Just joined the list, Looking for information on the Sledd, Franklin, and Ford families of Henrico County. My wifes' ancestor, Virginia G. Sledd, was the daughter of William Sledd and Julia Franklin. Virginia was married to George Rowe in 1853 in Henrico County. Here's what I have on William Sledd: 1830 Monroe Ward, Richmond Independent City, Virginia Wm. Sledd one male age 20-30, one female under age 5, one female age 15-20 1840 Richmond City, Ward 3, Henrico County, Virginia William Sledd - - - - 2 1 - - - - - - - / 2 2 - - 1 - - - - - - - - two males age 20-30, one male age 30-40, two females under age 5, two females age 5-10, one female age 20-30 1850 Western District, Henrico County, Virginia 358/379 William Sledd, 42, m, butcher, 12000, b Va Julia A., 38, f, b Va Amanda, 17, f, b Va Virginia, 13, f, b Va Emily, 10, f, b Va Anna, 8, f, b Va William, 3, m, b Va Betty T., 2, f, b Va 1860 Western District, Henrico County, Virginia, P.O. Sledd, infant son of William and Julia P. Sledd of this city, age 2 years 25 days. A sister Mary is mentioned (Note: Mary at this date was old enough to write a eulogy in verse for her brothers obituary) (N. S. v. 1, no. 19, 13 May 1847, page 75). Fredericksburg Ledger Friday 8/27/1869 Mr William Sledd, one of the oldest and most highly respected butchers of Richmond, died of paralysis on Monday night at his farm in Hanover. He had been a member of the Methodist Church for over thirty years - Richmond News [Mr Sledd was the father-in-law of our late fellow citizen GHC Rowe and of our present fellow-citizen EC Rowe] William Sledd is believed to be the son of Thomas Sledd and Betsy Marks, and grandson of John Sledd and Charity Gentry. In the contuing search for they ancestry of my wife's Sledd family, I have come accross the Revolutionary War Pension file for John Sledd. The file is a widow's application for Charity Sledd made on 3 September 1839 in Louisa County, Virginia. Charity states her age as 86, that she was married to John Sledd on 24 October 1772 in Hanovertown, Hanover County, Virginia by Parson Henry in the Protestant Church. Charity then states that John Sledd died on 24 June 1827. Charity lists four children: Thomas, John A. Sledd, Elizabeth Luck, and Nancy M. Clough. Apparently, the service information is the same, or similar, to that of John Sledd of Powhattan County, Virginia. The second part of the file is a deposition by John A. Sledd, also made in Louisa County on 3 September 1839, stating that he is well acquainted with John Sledd, deceased, and Charity Sledd, who was his wife (the former Charity Gentry. He then repeats the date of death previously given for John Sledd, and further states that Charity has not remarried. Curiously, John A. Sledd makes no mention or claim that John and Charity Sledd are his parents. The next portion of the file is the 29 December 1846 Declaration by Nancy M. Clough, of Louisa County. Nancy states that she is the daughter of Charity Sledd, who died without receiving any of the Pension Benefits. The next part of the file is the statement/claim made on 7 January 1847 by Elizabeth Luck of Spotsylvania County. Elizabeth states that she is the daughter of Charity Sledd, deceased. Elizabeth further states that she has no record of her age, but by the best information she can get, she is about 60 years of age, and that her mother had four children older than her, and that she had often heard her mother say that she was married at least three years before the birth of her first child, who was about 11 years older than Elizabeth. Elizabeth further states that the other four children are now dead. The next information from the file is 11 January 1847 declaration made at the monthly session of the Louisa County Court that satisfactory evidence has been shown to approve the Pension application for the children of John and Charity Sledd, both deceased. The declaration further states that Charity Sledd died on 20 October 1839, and goes on to list the children of John and Charity as Thomas Sledd, John A. Sledd, Elizabeth Luck, and Nancy M. Clough, and further clarifies that these are there only children. Note: the fifth child of John and Charity is Rebecca Sledd, who married Louis Hott. Have the following Census information to go along with this data: 1810 Goochland County, Virginia Thos. Sled - 20100 10100 two males under age 10, one male age 16-26, one female under age 10, one female age 16-26 Note: believe this Thomas to be son of John and Charity. 1820 Louisa County, Virginia John Sledd - 100101 20001 one male under age 10, one male age 18-26, one male age 45 and up, two females under age 10, one female age 45 and up Note: believe the male age 18-26 is probably John A. Sledd, son of John and Charity. Note: do not see Thomas Sledd listed in 1820 Census record. 1830 Louisa County, Virginia Thomas Sledd - 0000001000000 0000001000000 one male age 40-50, one female age 40-50 Charity Sledd - 000001000000000 0001000001000 one female age 70-80, one male age 30-40, one female age 15-20 1840 Louisa County, Virginia Thomas Sledd - 0000100100000 0000000100000 one male age 50-60, one female age 50-60, one male age 20-30 Believe that my wife's ancestor, William Sledd of Henrico County, and his brother John P. Sledd, also of Henrico County are possibly/probably the children of Thomas Sledd, and are more than likely the two sons shown as under age 10 in the 1810 Goochland County Census records. Realize that this is stretching it and that there is no documentary evidence to prove it. Names of other siblings of William are Mary M. Sledd (married to Benjamin Franklin 28 July 1824, brother of Julia Ann Franklin), Catherine Sledd (married William F. Carpenter 28 July 1824), Thomas Sledd. Looking for information on the family of Thomas Franklin and Dolly Ford. They received a marriage bond in Henrico County, Virginia on 29 July 1794, with surety by Samuel Ford. Information received from another researcher, Marilyn Jackson, indicates that my wifes' ancestor, Julia Ann Franklin, born c1810 and wife of William W. Sledd of Henrico County, may be the daughter of Thomas and Dolly, and may also have a brother, Benjamin Franklin, who married Mary M. Sledd, possible sister to William W. Sledd. I believe I have Thomas in Census records as follows: 1810 Richmond Independant City, Virginia Thomas Franklin - 30010 02010 one male age 26-45, one female age 26-45, two females age 10-16, three males under age 10 1820 Richmond Independant City, Virginia Thomas Franklin - 120001 11010 one male over age 45, one female age 26-45, two males and one female age 10-16, one male and one female under age 10. Any help much appreciated. Cheers, Michael Kent Island, Maryland
