Hi, Steve, The first thing you try to find out is what units were from Augusta Co. There is a website, I believe, that can tell you this. Try to Google "Civil War Units, Virginia". When you find out which possible units he was in [there may be two or three companies - infantry, cavalry, artillery...], you could either try to find a book on that regiment on Jeff Weaver's webpage [he sells - and/or writes? - civil war books by regiment and company, which have rosters in them]. OR you could get the National Archives' microfilm for those units' rosters and pay records which are alphabetical by surname, and, from this, learn his entire recorded history during his CW service! This is amazing and it is FUN! Microfilm available thru Mormons or on interlibe loan from Libe of VA or any other library which would have VA confederate CW state militia records. Another way to track down your Mr. Robertson is by using the surname index reel in the National Archives' military microfilms for the CW. If someone on the Henrico mail list can get you this info from the Library of Va, it is there as well. They could try to identify the number of the film your ancestor's records are on, then you could order the film thru interlibe loan. Once you know which unit he was in, and other such info, you can get a copy of his records direct from the National Archives, or you can xerox them off the film yourself if you can find a film reader that does that. You will need to go to NARA's webpage and see what info they require on the application. Once you get an application from them and send it in, they will send you his service and pension records [separate applications required for each]. If you live near a Mormon genealogy library [or family history center, as they call it], they may be able to help you obtain this info from National Archives [aka "NARA"]. Hope this is clear - if not, ask questions! Good luck! Marge in VT << It is believed that Alexander G. Robertson was born in Augusta County, VA - date unknown. He married Nancy Winter Hanger February 6, 1851. She was born April 27, 1825, in Augusta County. Family tradition says at the outbreak of the Civil War he was commissioned an officer in a Virginia regiment and rose to a colonelcy before the war's end. Later Nancy and he moved to Richmond, where he practiced law. Nancy died in Richmond, November 14, 1905. I am attempting to verify Alexander's military service. I do not know when he died, or where they are buried. I live in Indiana and would appreciate some help. >>
