Dr. Louis Manarin's newest Civil War book "Henrico County * Field of Honor" (976 pages) has over 20 listings in the index under 'hospitals' but does not mention a Wayside Hospital. Could they have been referring to a place of recuperation along the wayside/road. If you could furnish more information such as name, rank, unit, USA or CSA, and the source of the quotation I will ask for his opinion next week.
